There is no universal U.S. government alert service for every visa appointment opening. For a nonimmigrant visa, use the official appointment system for the embassy or consulate handling your case and check it regularly; for an immigrant visa, use the National Visa Center’s scheduling-status tool to track case scheduling progress, not live appointment slots. Neither wait-time estimates nor the immigrant-status tool guarantee an appointment date.
Start with the visa type and the correct post
First determine whether you are seeking a nonimmigrant visa interview or an immigrant visa interview, then identify the embassy or consulate that will handle the case. The official nonimmigrant appointment system asks applicants to choose a country and city. Follow the relevant post’s current instructions rather than assuming all locations use the same portal or notification process. U.S. Department of State guidance says applicants should generally apply in their country of nationality or residence, or at a designated processing post where applicable. Applying elsewhere may make it harder to qualify, and a visa fee is not refundable or transferable.

For nonimmigrant visas, check the official appointment portal
The post’s official appointment system is the place to look for available interview dates. If you already have an appointment, check whether the system offers an earlier date and use its own rescheduling process if a suitable opening appears. The Department of State says posts release additional slots regularly and advises applicants to check often, but availability changes and an opening is not assured.

- Open the official appointment instructions linked from the embassy or consulate handling your application.
- Sign in to the designated scheduling system and review the available dates for your visa category and post.
- If you have an existing appointment and an acceptable earlier date appears, follow the portal’s rescheduling instructions. Do not cancel an existing appointment until you understand the post’s rules and the effect of rescheduling.
- Check the post’s instructions for how it communicates any official rescheduling offer. Do not rely on a sender address or process described for another country.
The Department of State’s global visa wait-time page is useful for context, not as a live slot feed. The page is updated monthly; it says estimates do not guarantee an appointment within a specific time, and a newly released date may be sooner than the estimate.

For immigrant visas, track NVC scheduling status—not open slots
The Immigrant Visa Scheduling Status Tool shows which documentarily complete cases the National Visa Center is scheduling, organized by post and case category. It helps you understand scheduling progress, but it is not a live calendar for selecting an open date and does not guarantee appointment availability.
Be cautious with third-party alerts and paid promises
Some private vendors advertise appointment checking or alerts, including checking while a user is logged in to a scheduling portal. Such claims are the vendor’s own; they do not establish independent verification of security, reliability, privacy practices, or compatibility with every portal. The official sources cited here do not endorse a private alert service.

VFS Global warns that slot availability is controlled by governments and that fraudulent third parties may sell or claim to arrange appointments. Use the official or designated booking channel for your case and treat any paid promise of a guaranteed early appointment with caution. VFS’s warning applies to processes it serves; it does not define every U.S. visa post’s procedures.
Notification details can be location-specific. For example, the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico says legitimate offers to reschedule earlier come from its online appointment website via [email protected]. That is not a universal sender address. Verify the current instructions for your own post before trusting an email or link.
Urgent travel: verify whether an official expedited option applies
The Department of State announced an optional B-visa expedited appointment pilot at select posts, with limited availability and eligibility rules, through December 31, 2026. Its August 18, 2026 announcement says eligible applicants may pay $750 for an interview within 10 business days, subject to availability. This is a limited pilot, not a general service or a guaranteed appointment. Check the Department’s current announcement and terms for participating posts, eligibility, price, and availability before relying on it.
Do not confuse STEP with visa appointment alerts
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service for U.S. citizens and nationals traveling or living abroad to receive embassy and consulate updates, including safety information. It is not a visa appointment slot notification system. Details are on the official STEP site.
