Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the most accurate results, close open applications, pause other devices using your connection, and connect your computer to the router with Ethernet if you want to assess the service reaching your home. Run the test more than once under similar conditions, and review upload, download, latency and other quality measures—not just the highest download number. If you want to know how your Wi-Fi performs in a particular room, test there over Wi-Fi and note that connection type.
Choose what you want the test to measure
A speed test measures performance between your device and a test endpoint at a particular time. It is not a direct, isolated reading of your internet provider’s access line: your device, browser, Wi-Fi, test server and conditions along the network path can all affect the result. Cloudflare explains that its own test reflects realistic connection quality and may include browser and local Wi-Fi effects, not just the access network (Cloudflare’s explanation of how its Speed Test works).

- To assess the connection reaching your home: connect a computer to the router with Ethernet, where possible. This removes the local wireless link as one variable.
- To assess everyday Wi-Fi: use the device and room where you normally connect. The result includes that location’s wireless conditions, so record that you tested over Wi-Fi.
Google Fiber recommends a wired connection for maximum test speed (Google Fiber’s Speedtest by Ookla guidance). Ethernet is useful for diagnosis; it does not increase the speed your plan or provider supplies.
Prepare and run the test
- Connect the test device. Use Ethernet for a wired assessment, or connect to Wi-Fi in the location you want to evaluate.
- Reduce competing traffic. Close open applications and pause other household devices’ internet use for the measurement. Google Fiber recommends both steps to reduce interference during a test.
- Choose a test tool. Cloudflare points home users to speed.cloudflare.com. Google Fiber recommends the Speedtest by Ookla app and provides server-selection guidance for its customers. These are examples, not evidence that one service is universally the most accurate.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Run more than one measurement without changing the device, connection type or location. Record the approximate time and, if shown, the test server. Results vary; a single peak is not a reliable promise of everyday performance. Cloudflare discusses this variability in its home network performance guide.
- Save useful context. Note the device, whether it used Ethernet or Wi-Fi, the test tool and server if displayed, and roughly when you tested. This makes later comparisons more meaningful; it does not make any particular test method exact.
Understand the numbers
Download and upload are throughput measurements: the rates at which data is received from or sent to the test endpoint. They describe data transfer, but not every aspect of how responsive or consistent a connection feels.

| Measure | What it describes | Why it can matter |
|---|---|---|
| Download throughput | Rate of receiving data from the test endpoint. | Useful for understanding how quickly downloads and incoming streams can transfer data. |
| Upload throughput | Rate of sending data to the test endpoint. | Relevant to sending files, video calls and other activities that transmit data. |
| Unloaded latency | Round-trip delay when there is no significant transfer, as described in Cloudflare’s diagnostics. | Helps describe responsiveness when the connection is otherwise idle. |
| Loaded latency | Round-trip delay while downloading or uploading. | Shows how responsiveness may change when the connection is busy. |
| Jitter | Variation in latency over time. | Consistency matters for real-time uses such as calls and gaming. |
| Packet loss | A measure of data packets that do not reach their destination. | Can help identify connection-quality problems beyond raw data rate. |
Cloudflare documents these connection-quality measures and relates them to activities such as streaming, gaming and web chat in its Aggregated Internet Measurement (AIM) overview and Speed documentation. The useful measure depends on the activity: throughput describes moving data, while latency and jitter help characterize responsiveness and consistency. No one number describes every connection experience.
Interpret differences without blaming the wrong link
If a wired test is materially better than a Wi-Fi test from the same device under similar conditions, the wireless path is worth investigating before attributing the difference to your provider. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive diagnosis or a universal pass/fail threshold. Wi-Fi signal, router placement and other local conditions can affect results; the test alone does not establish which factor is responsible.

- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Tests from different services may also disagree because they use different methods and infrastructure. Cloudflare says its test is designed to assess realistic connection quality rather than focus only on peak bandwidth. Google Fiber’s recommendation of Ookla is guidance for its customers, not a controlled comparison proving that either tool is best for everyone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to use an app instead of a browser
For very fast connections, the testing method itself can limit the reported result. Google Fiber says most web browsers cap out at around 3 Gbps and warns that browser tests might not accurately represent connections above 3 Gbps; it recommends its app for the most accurate results. Treat that as Google Fiber’s guidance, not a universal guarantee about every browser or testing service. If you have a connection in that range, compare results using the recommended app and follow any provider-specific server instructions.

What a speed test can—and cannot—tell you
- It gives a snapshot of the path between your device and a test endpoint under the conditions at that time.
- It can help compare wired and Wi-Fi performance, or repeated results from the same setup.
- It cannot, by itself, prove that your provider is under-delivering or identify the precise cause of a low result.
- A plan’s advertised speed is not a guarantee that every device will measure that rate, especially over Wi-Fi.
If repeated wired measurements remain below what you expect, keep the results and their context and contact your provider for help interpreting them. If wired results look stronger than Wi-Fi, investigate the wireless connection—such as device location and router placement—before considering equipment changes.
