Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun repeat speed tests, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on the same device if possible, and check whether the slowdown affects one device or several. If Ethernet is consistently much faster, investigate your Wi-Fi; if wired and wireless results are repeatedly poor across devices, the router, service plan, an outage, or your provider’s connection may be involved. A speed test is a useful comparison, not proof of one specific fault.
What a speed test can—and cannot—tell you
A test on a phone or laptop connected over Wi-Fi measures the whole path from that device, through the wireless link and router, to the test server. A low result therefore does not by itself show whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, puts it plainly: “A slow Wi-Fi test does not always mean there is a fault with your broadband line.” Its consumer guidance was last updated 25 August 2026: Ofcom broadband and Wi-Fi help.

Tests can also differ because of the test server’s location, network congestion, and time of day. Compare like with like, repeat surprising results, and avoid treating one reading—or differences between test services—as proof of throttling. Ofcom recommends testing more than once and trying different checkers when appropriate; Google also notes that test results can vary: Google’s Nest and Google Wifi speed-test guidance.

- Record a baseline. Run a speed test and note the date and time, device, whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, download and upload speeds, and latency if shown. Use the same test service for comparisons where practical.
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads, updates, and streaming on other devices while testing. Simultaneous high-bandwidth activities share available capacity and can affect results. Google explains this in its slow-internet troubleshooting guidance.
- Test Wi-Fi in two places. Run a test close to the router, then repeat in the room where the problem occurs. A substantial drop farther away makes coverage, walls, or interference plausible contributors.
- Compare with Ethernet, if available. Connect a compatible computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test on that same device. Ofcom recommends Ethernet for a more accurate speed test because Wi-Fi can slow the signal. If you need a cable, check that both the computer’s port and the router’s port support the speed you expect; either can limit throughput. A wired test is still an internet speed test, but it removes the Wi-Fi link from the comparison.
- Try another device. Test a second phone or computer in the same place. If just one device is slow, restart it, close unused apps, and check for software or browser updates before treating the problem as a whole-home connection fault.
- Repeat at another time. If readings vary sharply, test again later and, if useful, use another checker. Keep the time and conditions with each result so you can distinguish a consistent problem from ordinary variation.
How to interpret the results
| What you find | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi is poor, but Ethernet is materially better | The local wireless connection is a leading suspect; the comparison does not identify one exact cause. | Check router location, distance, obstacles, interference, client capability, and competing wireless traffic. |
| Wi-Fi and Ethernet are repeatedly poor on several devices | A problem with the router or modem, service plan, outage, or provider connection becomes more plausible. | Repeat the comparison, check for a known outage, and contact the provider with dated results. |
| Only one device is slow | The device, its software or wireless capability, or its location may be the issue. | Restart it, close unused apps, check for updates, and compare it with another device in the same place. |
| Results are much worse in certain rooms | Wi-Fi coverage may be affected by distance, walls, building materials, router placement, or competing networks. | Compare near the router and in the problem room, then adjust placement or investigate coverage. |
| Speed looks fine, but calls or games feel laggy | Download speed is not the only measure relevant to real-time services; latency can matter. | Note latency if the test reports it, and describe the specific activity and symptoms to your provider. |
What to try before contacting your provider
- Place the router in an open, roughly central position and off the floor, with fewer walls and obstacles between it and the devices you use.
- Move it away from equipment that may interfere with Wi-Fi, such as microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, some lamps, and speakers.
- Temporarily disconnect devices downloading, updating, or streaming, then repeat the comparison.
- Restart the affected device and router if the results suggest a temporary fault. Router restart steps vary by model, so follow the instructions for your equipment.
If Ethernet performs well but Wi-Fi remains weak in particular rooms, improving coverage may help; it will not increase the speed of the broadband service coming into your home. Ofcom notes that mesh Wi-Fi can help reach more rooms in larger homes, but it may cost more and adding too many devices can make problems worse. Consider it only after the wired-versus-wireless comparison points to coverage as the issue: Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance.

- 【WIFI Signal Scanning Tester】The analyzer is made of sturdy and material. It features a 4-inch TFT color display that shows wifi signals in the 2.4G for frequency range, along with the number of wifi networks occupying the same for frequency point. The display updates automatically.
- 【 Power Display】The analyzer has a display function, with the power conveniently shown in the upper right corner of the screen.
- 【Long Life】Equipped with a 600mAh luminous , the analyzer has a working current of 160mA and a standby time of about 4 hours.
- 【Charging Indicator Light】The analyzer can be charged using the TYPE-C port, and it is equipped with a lithium-ion charging management circuit. The charging time is approximately 2 hours. The red light indicates that the analyzer is charging, while the green light indicates a full charge.
- 【Easy to Use】Simply press and hold the button to turn on/off the analyzer. Pressing the button once starts the scanning process, and pressing it again pauses the scanning. The display shows the wifi signals at various frequencies in the 4G range, with a number displayed if multiple signals occupy the same for frequency point. The bottom waveform represents 5G signals.
When streaming speed numbers are useful
Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for HD at 720p, 5 Mbps for Full HD at 1080p, and 15 Mbps for UHD at 4K. These are Netflix playback recommendations, not a universal definition of fast internet or a guarantee that a household’s connection will handle every simultaneous activity. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds for its service-specific guidance.
