Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA service worker cannot read or change a page’s DOM directly. It runs in a separate worker context with no document, so the page has to do the DOM work. The service worker sends a message to a client (an open page it controls or can reach), and code running in that page’s Window context updates the DOM. The page can send a reply back through the same messaging channel.
Why a service worker has no DOM access
The MDN Web Docs reference for the Service Worker API states that service workers “run in a worker context: they therefore have no DOM access and run on a different thread to the main JavaScript that powers your app.” That separation is intentional. A service worker is a background script that intercepts network requests, manages caches, and handles push and sync events, often while no tab is visible. Because it runs on its own thread, there is no document or window object to query, so calls like document.querySelector() fail inside the worker.

The practical consequence is that you should not try to reach the DOM from the worker at all. Instead, treat the worker as the place where decisions are made and the page as the place where rendering happens.

#1 Best Overall
Page starts the work
The page calls navigator.serviceWorker.controller.postMessage() or posts to a registration’s active worker, the service worker does its job (reading a cache, fetching data, computing a result), and then it replies to the page. The page receives the reply and updates the DOM itself.
Service worker event starts the work
A push, sync, or fetch-related event may run when no page is looking at the app. The worker must first find a client. It can use the event.clientId or event.source value when the event supplies one, or it can enumerate open windows with self.clients.matchAll(). It then calls postMessage() on each client it wants to reach. The page handles the message and changes the DOM.
A working pattern
The following pattern follows the documented client and messaging interfaces. It has not been run as part of this article, so test it in your own app before relying on it.
In the service worker, reply to a message from a page, or notify all open pages for a worker-originated event:

// service-worker.js
self.addEventListener("message", (event) => {
const client = event.source;
if (!client) return;
// Ask the page to perform the DOM work.
client.postMessage({ type: "UPDATE_STATUS", text: "Updated by the page" });
});
// Or, for a worker-originated event where you need to find a page:
async function notifyOpenPages(data) {
const clients = await self.clients.matchAll({
type: "window",
includeUncontrolled: true,
});
for (const client of clients) {
client.postMessage(data);
}
}
In the page, listen on navigator.serviceWorker and do the DOM work only after checking the message type:
// page.js
navigator.serviceWorker.addEventListener("message", (event) => {
const data = event.data;
if (data?.type === "UPDATE_STATUS") {
document.querySelector("#status").textContent = data.text;
}
});
Keep the payload small and plain. Messages are copied using the structured clone algorithm, so you can send objects, arrays, strings, numbers, and similar data. A service worker and its page do not share memory, and a SharedArrayBuffer cannot be posted across their agent clusters.
What self.clients gives you
The clients object is the service-worker side of the client model. self.clients.get(id) resolves a single client by its ID. self.clients.matchAll(options) resolves an array and accepts options that control which client types are included. Setting includeUncontrolled: true also returns same-origin pages that the current worker does not control.

For document clients, the API returns a WindowClient, which provides client state and browsing-context operations such as focus() and navigate(). Those methods manage the tab or window. They do not give the worker script access to the page’s document.

What happens when no page is open
If no page is open, there is no DOM to change. A worker can call self.clients.openWindow(url) in situations the platform supports, which returns a WindowClient rather than a DOM object. The new page must install its own message listener during startup and perform the DOM operation itself. Do not assume a message sent immediately after openWindow() will be received, because the listener may not be installed yet.
Quick Recap
| Situation | What the service worker gets | Where the DOM change happens |
|---|---|---|
| Page sends a message to the worker | event.source as a client handle |
In the page, after it receives the reply |
| Worker event with a known client ID | Handle from self.clients.get(id), or not stated if the client has closed |
In that page, if it still exists |
| Worker event with no specific client | Array from self.clients.matchAll() |
In each page that receives the message |
| No page open | WindowClient from openWindow(), where supported |
In the newly loaded page, after its listener is installed |
Constraints to plan for
- Secure context. Service workers are available only in secure contexts. HTTPS is the normal requirement in production, and
localhostcounts as secure during development. - Missing clients. A worker event may run when the page you expected has closed. Check that the client exists before calling
postMessage(), as MDN’s examples do. - Validated messages. Treat incoming data as untrusted input. Check
data.typeand the shape of the payload in the page before changing any element. - Controlled page scope. Use
includeUncontrolled: trueonly when you intend to reach same-origin pages that the worker does not control.
Common mistakes
- Calling
documentorwindowin the worker. Those globals do not exist there, so the call throws a reference error. - Posting a DOM node or a function. Only structured-cloneable data can cross the boundary.
- Assuming
WindowClient.focus()ornavigate()will let you change content. Those methods control the browsing context only. - Sending a message before the page’s listener is registered, which is most likely right after opening a new window.
