For a Samsung Galaxy phone locked to a mobile network, request an unlock from the carrier or retailer that originally supplied it. Samsung does not issue a universal carrier unlock code, and the original provider decides whether the phone and account qualify and how the unlock is completed. Have the phone’s IMEI available when you contact the provider.
First, identify which lock the phone is asking about
The wording on the screen matters because several different security prompts can look like a request for a code.

- Network unlock PIN or code: The phone is restricted to its original carrier. Contact that carrier or the retailer that supplied the device. Samsung UK says that network unlocking is handled by the original provider, not Samsung. Samsung UK Support.
- SIM PIN or PUK: These protect or unblock the SIM card; they do not remove a carrier network lock. Contact the SIM provider or follow its SIM security process.
- Screen PIN or password: This controls access to the phone itself and is separate from both SIM security and network unlocking.
- Regional lock: Samsung describes this as a separate restriction, not the same as a carrier network lock. Check the phone’s documentation or contact Samsung support if the message refers to region or country use.
Samsung UK Support states, “Samsung does not lock any of its devices to any particular network.” In this context, that means Samsung directs customers seeking removal of a carrier network lock to the original network provider or retailer.

How to request the network unlock
- Note the exact message. If it asks for a network unlock code or says the network is locked, continue with the original carrier. If it asks for a SIM PIN or PUK, contact the SIM provider instead.
- Identify the original provider. Check purchase records, the box, or carrier account records. If you are unsure, Samsung US says carrier identification details can help establish which provider supplied the phone. Samsung US: Move your Galaxy phone to a different service carrier.
- Find the IMEI. On the phone, open Settings and look under About phone or Status for IMEI information. Samsung’s guidance says the IMEI is useful when requesting an unlock. Give it only to the carrier through its official support channel, not in a public post. Samsung Gulf Support.
- Ask the original carrier to check eligibility. The provider can tell you whether the device and account meet its current conditions. Depending on the carrier and country, these may involve account standing, a contract, or an outstanding device balance. Samsung lists account and payment status as possible checks; for example, AT&T says an installment balance must be paid off for its applicable unlock process. That is an AT&T-specific condition, not a universal rule. AT&T Wireless Support.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions for that phone. A provider may supply a code to enter after inserting another carrier’s SIM, provide an on-device unlock option, or unlock an eligible phone automatically. T-Mobile documents a Device Unlock route in settings for supported devices; AT&T describes automatic unlocking for some eligible devices. T-Mobile Support.
- Test service with the new carrier. Use an activated SIM or the setup method the new provider specifies. If service does not work as expected, check activation and ask the new carrier whether the specific Galaxy model supports its network and features.
Why there is no single Samsung unlock code or process
Samsung’s support instructions direct customers to the original provider, and Samsung US says requirements vary by carrier rather than being set by Samsung. The provider’s current policy determines whether a phone is eligible, whether there is a fee or waiting period, what proof may be needed, and whether it uses a code, an on-device control, or automatic unlocking. The reviewed support information does not establish a universal fee or turnaround time, so ask the original provider for those details.

The carrier examples illustrate why the steps can differ: AT&T describes eligibility checks and automatic unlocking for some devices, while T-Mobile documents an on-device route for supported devices. Neither example should be treated as the procedure for another carrier or country.

If the unlock does not work
- The carrier says the phone is not eligible: Ask which specific condition remains unmet, such as a balance or account requirement, and what needs to happen before the device can be reconsidered.
- The phone does not show a code-entry screen: Do not keep trying unrelated codes. Some carrier and device combinations use an app or settings control, and some eligible phones unlock automatically. Follow the original carrier’s instructions for the exact model.
- You may be entering the wrong type of code: A SIM PIN, PUK, and screen lock cannot remove a network restriction. Recheck the exact prompt and contact the provider responsible for that lock.
- The new SIM is recognized but service is limited: Confirm that the SIM is activated, then check the Galaxy model’s network-band and feature compatibility with the new carrier. An unlocked phone may not support every band or feature on another network. Samsung Canada notes that VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and 5G optimization can depend on the carrier and model. - The seller or a support channel sends you elsewhere: Ask it to identify the organization responsible for the lock and the precise reason the request cannot be handled there. Samsung’s consumer guidance points network-unlock requests to the original carrier or retailer.
