Use ChatGPT’s Try on control on a clothing or accessory listing, or upload a picture of an item and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. For a more useful visualization, start with a clear reference image and make any follow-up edit specific. Treat the result as an approximation: it cannot confirm how a garment will fit or what size to buy.
How to try on clothes in ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page describes two ways to visualize an item. The dedicated product-listing control is labeled Try on; OpenAI’s October 1, 2026 release note says the feature is available on web and mobile.

- From a product listing: Open a clothing or accessory listing and select Try on.
- Provide a reference photo: Take or upload a selfie when prompted, then review the generated image.
- From an uploaded item image: Upload a picture of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you.

Begin with a clear reference image
OpenAI’s image-input guidance says unclear or ambiguous images may be interpreted less accurately, and that uploaded images are resized before analysis. A clear reference is therefore a sensible starting point, but it is general image-input guidance—not a clothing-specific recipe or guarantee. OpenAI does not specify an ideal pose, distance, background, garment visibility, or lighting for try-ons.

There is no published accuracy percentage or comparative study in the cited OpenAI documentation. A sharper-looking result should not be treated as proof that the depiction is exact.
Make one concrete edit at a time
To adjust a result, select the image and describe the change you want. In the editor, you can highlight an area and describe an edit, or describe the edit without selecting an area. The editor also provides undo and redo, cancel, save, and aspect-ratio controls. A highlight can help communicate the intended area, but OpenAI cautions that selection boundaries are not always precise and an edit may spill beyond them.

Does a try-on show whether clothes will fit?
No. OpenAI states: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” The image is a generated visualization, not evidence of how a garment will fit in real life. Before buying, check the merchant’s size measurements and product details, and review its return policy.

- Visual resemblance: Does the generated image give you a rough sense of the item’s appearance? It may differ from the product and from your appearance.
- Size and fit: What do the merchant’s measurements and product information say?
- Purchase recourse: What does the merchant’s return policy allow?
How to change or delete your reference photo
OpenAI says your reference photo can be reused for future try-ons. To replace or remove it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. The available controls are documented in OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page and its release notes.
