How to Choose a Smart Home Hub That Works With Your Devices

Start with the exact devices you own or plan to buy—not the hub’s brand. Check each device’s model, connection method and ecosystem support, then choose a hub or hub-capable speaker, display or router that supports both the connection technology and platform you need. Matter can help devices from different brands work together, but it does not replace Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave, nor does it guarantee every feature works in every app.

How to tell whether a hub works with your devices

  1. List exact models. Record the model number for every device you want to connect. Products from the same brand can use different protocols or support different platforms.
  2. Check each device’s connection method. Look for Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave or Matter on its packaging or the manufacturer’s compatibility page. Matter is a smart-home interoperability standard that can run over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread; it is not a radio that replaces those network technologies.
  3. Match the hub’s radios and standards. A device and hub need a supported connection or a compatible bridge. A Zigbee or Z-Wave product needs a hub or bridge that supports that protocol; Matter support alone does not add Zigbee or Z-Wave radios. Use the hub maker’s current compatibility information and the device maker’s specifications to check the exact model. Google’s compatibility page is one example of a platform-specific device list; a 2026 buying guide also explains why protocol support matters when comparing hubs.
  4. Check platform and feature support. Confirm that your chosen app or voice assistant supports the device category and the particular functions you care about. A device may pair successfully while some controls or features remain unavailable in that platform.
  5. Check whether a separate bridge is needed. Some hubs connect supported devices directly; others rely on a manufacturer’s bridge or gateway. Confirm the route for each existing non-Matter device instead of assuming that a Matter-capable hub can absorb it.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

Often, yes. The Matter device needs a way to communicate with the platform that controls it. In Google Home, for example, Google’s guidance calls for a Matter hub; compatible speakers, displays, routers and streamers can serve that role. Amazon’s developer documentation says compatible Echo devices can act as Matter administrators and control supported devices locally. The required device and model support depend on the platform, so check its current list before buying.

Matter devices may use Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. If your setup includes a Matter-over-Thread device, it needs a Thread Border Router to connect the Thread network to the rest of your home network. Some Matter hubs include that capability and some do not. Google says a mix of Wi-Fi and Thread Matter devices requires a hub that also works as a Thread Border Router. Check the exact model rather than relying on a product family name. Google’s Matter hub guidance lists supported Google and Nest devices and identifies which models support Thread.

What Matter does—and does not—solve

  • It can help different brands interoperate. Matter Multi-Admin can allow a supported device to be connected to multiple smart-home platforms, according to Amazon’s Matter documentation. Each platform still needs to support the device and its relevant features.
  • It does not make every feature universal. Platforms and apps add support for device types at different times. Google says its supported Matter categories continue to expand; check the exact model and desired functions in the target platform’s compatibility information.
  • It does not replace older protocols. Matter does not make a Zigbee or Z-Wave device connect directly to a hub that lacks the corresponding radio or a suitable bridge.
  • It does not guarantee that a legacy product will be updated. Google says existing Works with Google Home devices remain supported and that some manufacturers may update products for Matter. That is not a promise of an update for every older model. Google’s compatibility information is the place to check platform support.

How to compare hubs

Use these criteria to shortlist options. A speaker, display or router with hub functionality may be enough; the right choice depends on the devices and platform you already use.

What to compare What to verify
Platform fit Does it work with your preferred app, phone ecosystem and voice assistant?
Protocol support Which of Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter does the exact model support?
Thread Border Router Does it provide this capability if you plan to use Matter-over-Thread devices?
Existing devices Can your non-Matter products join directly, or do they need a separate bridge or gateway?
Device categories and features Does the platform support the exact product category and controls you need?
Network and control Are there network, commissioning or local-control requirements that your setup can meet?

For example, Google currently lists products including Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer 4K among its Matter hub-capable devices. That list is specific to Google Home and may change; it is not a guarantee that every Matter device or feature works with every listed model. For Amazon, consult its current compatible-device information before choosing a particular Echo model. The Amazon Matter documentation describes the platform’s Matter support, while Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide provides broader buying context, not an official compatibility guarantee.

Check setup and network requirements before buying

Requirements vary by platform and can change. Google’s published setup flow calls for IPv6-enabled home Wi-Fi and a Matter hub; Thread devices also require a Thread Border Router. Its instructions further specify Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 4.2 or higher for pairing, Android 8.1 or later with the specified Google Play services version, or iOS 16.5 or later, and the latest Google Home app. These are requirements for Google’s documented setup flow, not universal Matter requirements. Check the current instructions for your platform before purchasing. Google’s setup instructions give the details.

Can one hub control devices from different brands?

It can, when the devices and hub share a supported platform or connection standard and the platform supports the devices’ categories and features. Matter can make cross-brand connections easier, and Matter Multi-Admin can support using a device with multiple platforms. But brand diversity alone is not the deciding factor: check protocol, model-level compatibility, platform support and any bridge requirement for each device.

Amazon’s documentation describes Matter as a way to connect smart-home devices locally to Alexa, and its Works with Alexa requirements cover certified devices connected through a hub, bridge, gateway or built-in Echo hub. Those requirements are for device makers and certification, not a complete consumer compatibility list. For product-level decisions, consult the current platform and manufacturer listings. Amazon’s Matter documentation covers Matter support; its Works with Alexa connection requirements explain the certification context.
