How to Get a Google Featured Snippet With Your WordPress Site

Google chooses featured snippets automatically. Improve your WordPress page by answering a specific question clearly, keeping the answer visible, and using accurate metadata.

You can’t switch on a Google featured snippet in WordPress or guarantee that your page will get one. Google selects a page and passage automatically for a particular search. Your best approach is to publish a useful, accurate page that answers the question clearly, make that answer visible to readers, and ensure Google can access the page.

What a featured snippet is—and what it isn’t

A featured snippet is an excerpt from a webpage that Google may show prominently when its systems judge that the page helps answer a search. It can also appear within a People Also Ask group. The excerpt is chosen for a query; it is not a label that a site owner can apply to a page.

That makes a featured snippet different from an ordinary search-result description. Google primarily builds snippets from page content, and the passage can vary with the search. A meta description may be used when Google considers it a more accurate description of the page, but it is not a featured-snippet control. See Google’s featured-snippet guidance and Google’s snippet documentation.

How to improve a WordPress page’s chances

Google does not publish a fixed optimization checklist or a threshold for earning a snippet. The following steps translate its stated emphasis on helpful answers into practical editorial work; none guarantees selection.

  1. Choose a specific question the page can answer. Match the page to the searcher’s actual need instead of trying to cover unrelated questions under one heading.
  2. Answer the question directly near the relevant heading. Give a concise, complete answer first, then provide the explanation, steps, qualifications, or evidence a reader needs. This is a useful writing approach, not a Google-mandated format.
  3. Structure the rest for the task. Use descriptive headings. Use a real numbered list for ordered steps, bullets for separate checks, or a table for genuine comparisons. Clear structure helps people scan; it does not promise that Google will show a list, table, or paragraph snippet.
  4. Keep the answer visible and accurate. Include the substance in the page readers can see. Do not rely on hidden or misleading markup to represent an answer that the page does not actually provide.
  5. Make the page accessible to Google. Check that the page is published and not blocked from crawling or indexing by your site configuration. WordPress controls and plugins vary, so verify the settings for your own installation.
  6. Write an accurate, page-specific meta description. If your WordPress setup provides a field or other way to manage meta tags, summarize that page honestly and naturally. Google may choose page text instead, and the description does not select a featured snippet. Google’s meta description guidance notes that CMSs such as WordPress may provide a settings page or another mechanism for this.

Does FAQ schema or other markup get you a featured snippet?

No. Structured data and featured snippets are different search appearances. Structured data can make a page eligible for certain supported rich results when it accurately describes visible content, but valid markup does not guarantee a rich result—and it does not designate a featured snippet. Google chooses featured-snippet passages through its systems, not through a WordPress schema setting.

Use structured data only when the page genuinely matches a Google-supported result type. Google’s structured data policies say markup must reflect content visible to readers. For relevant structured-data implementations, Google provides the Rich Results Test and URL Inspection tools; passing a technical check is not a promise that Google will display a result.

How long should the answer be?

There is no official minimum passage length or word-count formula for a featured snippet. Google says the useful length varies with the information, language, and platform. Write enough to answer the question completely, but do not stretch or cut the answer to hit a supposed 40-, 50-, or 60-word rule.

How to check what appears in Google

Search results can differ by query and context. Review the actual searches that matter to your page and, where possible, note the query, date, location, and device when recording what you see. Search Console can help you review how your site performs in Google Search, but an observation at one moment is not a guarantee of future display.

Google’s featured-snippet documentation was updated on 2025-12-10. It provides no fixed timetable for selection, so there is no reliable number of days after publishing when a page should be expected to gain a snippet.
