PS4 supports up to two local players; PS5 supports up to four. Split-screen is not available in PS VR2 mode.
Set up a local split-screen race
- Connect a controller for each player. Each participant needs an individual controller. Player 1 handles the race settings.
- Open the split-screen race option. In the game, select the local mode labelled “Split-Screen Race” or “Split-Screen Races.” The former “2P Split Screen” name was changed in the SPEC II update. The official manual does not document the exact menu labels leading to this option.
- Choose cars. Select a supplied rental car, or choose a car from the Garage that was added to Favourites in advance.
- Set up the race. Choose a course, layout and conditions. If you want to change the starting order, use the pre-race Quick Menu.
- Start the race. Confirm the setup and select “Start Race.”
Player limits and mode restrictions

The PS5 four-player option was announced with the SPEC II 1.40 update in November 2023. Polyphony Digital’s product information identifies SPEC III, released December 4, 2025, as the latest iteration listed on its page. The player limits above are the console capabilities described by the official game information.

The official sources available do not establish a specific progression unlock or the exact menu path before race setup, so there is no confirmed unlock sequence to follow here. They also do not establish whether PlayStation Plus is required for local split-screen; do not assume online-play requirements apply to a same-console race. The documented local setup requires a controller per player, and no separate second game copy is stated as necessary.
