To show how a Shopify store actually looks, capture its rendered storefront in a browser; Shopify-hosted image URLs are for product or collection imagery, not whole-site screenshots. For a repeatable directory, use a fixed viewport, choose a consistent crop and output format, then validate each image before publishing. The workflow below uses Playwright for direct control and covers Shopify’s file limits if you store the results in Shopify.
Choose what each directory thumbnail should show
Decide whether a listing should represent the store’s design or one of its products:

- Storefront preview: Capture the rendered website in a browser. This can show the header, hero area, navigation and visual style that a visitor encounters.
- Product or collection image: Use an image URL from an authorized data source. Shopify’s Storefront API Image object describes Shopify-hosted image resources; it does not generate a screenshot of an entire storefront.
These are different assets with different purposes. A product image may be a better card visual if the directory is organized around merchandise; a browser capture is the right fit when the listing is meant to preview the shop itself.

Playwright supports viewport screenshots, element screenshots and full-page screenshots. For a directory card, a fixed viewport or a selected hero/header element is usually easier to scan than a very tall page image. That is a design choice, not a Shopify requirement. The example uses a viewport capture at a fixed desktop size, then crops it to a common landscape ratio.

Install and run the capture script
Prerequisites: Node.js and npm installed on the machine that will run captures. Create a project, install Playwright, and install its Chromium browser:

node capture.mjs https://example.myshopify.com store.pngReplace the example with the store’s actual URL. A successful run writes a PNG showing the same 1280 × 800 CSS-pixel viewport for each store. The script checks the navigation response and closes the browser even if capture fails. Some storefronts may still render incomplete content after the initial document loads; if so, wait for a store-specific selector or a short, bounded delay before capturing rather than applying a long fixed wait to every URL.

Capture a particular element or the full page
To capture only a prominent element, replace the screenshot call with a locator capture. The selector must match an element present on the target site:

Standardize dimensions, scale and output
Consistency matters more than capturing every pixel. Define one policy for the directory and apply it to every store:

- Viewport: Keep the browser viewport dimensions fixed so layouts are compared at the same CSS size.
- Capture area: Choose viewport, a stable element, or full page; do not mix modes without a reason.
- Aspect ratio and crop: Pick a common ratio and crop position. Shopify notes that consistent aspect ratios help images align on product and collection pages; applying that advice to a directory grid is a design inference, not a directory-specific Shopify rule. See its product media guidance.
- Pixel scale: Playwright’s
cssscale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Itsdevicescale uses device pixels, yielding a higher-density and potentially larger image. SetdeviceScaleFactor: 1for a compact baseline, and only increase it when the card size and legibility justify the extra weight. See the Playwright screenshot API. - Format and naming: Use one format consistently where practical and neutral, descriptive filenames such as
store-name-homepage.png. Avoid names ending inthumb,smallorlargefor Shopify-hosted files; Shopify warns that its CDN can interpret those words as transformation requests.
For sharper cards, capture at a larger CSS viewport or device scale and resize down to the directory’s display dimensions. For smaller files, use a suitably compressed format and test that text and logos remain legible at the actual card size.

If the source is already a Shopify image resource, the Storefront API Image object exposes its URL, dimensions, alt text and ThumbHash placeholder data. Its URL supports transformations for resizing, cropping, scale and preferred output type. Shopify describes those transformations as best-effort: unsupported operations may be ignored. They resize or alter an existing Shopify-hosted image; they do not turn a storefront page into a screenshot. See the Image object documentation.
Keep files within Shopify’s limits
If you upload generated thumbnails to Shopify’s Files area, the Help Center lists a maximum image file size of 20 MB, a maximum resolution of 25 megapixels, and accepted image formats of JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and GIF. These are Shopify’s stated Files requirements, accessed in 2026; confirm the current requirements in Shopify’s Files guidance before a large upload.

Shopify’s product and collection media guidance separately gives maximum dimensions of 5000 × 5000 pixels and a file size under 20 MB. Those product/collection limits are distinct from the Files-area guidance above; use the requirements for the destination where the asset will live. See Shopify’s product media guidance.
Validate each thumbnail before publishing
- Confirm the capture completed: Check that the browser navigated to the intended store rather than a browser error, access-denied page or unrelated redirect.
- Inspect the image: Verify the store name or recognizable storefront content is visible, and that the crop has not cut off the main subject.
- Check consistency: Compare dimensions, aspect ratio, crop position and output format against the directory’s chosen standard.
- Check file size and pixels: If storing the result in Shopify, validate it against the applicable destination limits before upload.
- Use neutral filenames: Avoid Shopify-sensitive filename endings and verify the resulting hosted URL resolves to the intended image.
- Review authorization and rights: Before bulk capture or public display, review the relevant store terms, image rights, privacy concerns and legal requirements for your jurisdiction. Shopify’s technical image documentation does not establish permission to capture or republish third-party storefronts.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The browser times out or never reaches the store
Check that the URL is correct and reachable from the capture machine. Increase the navigation timeout only when slow loading is expected. A site can also block automated browsers or require an interaction; do not treat a timeout as a valid thumbnail. Log the store URL and failure reason so the directory can retry or flag the listing rather than publishing a broken image.

The screenshot is blank or missing images
domcontentloaded means the initial document has been parsed, not that every image or client-rendered section is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector on the page, or use a short delay for known slow rendering. If lazy-loaded content matters, scroll the page or capture the intended element after it becomes visible. Keep waits bounded so one slow store does not stall a batch indefinitely.

The image looks inconsistent with other cards
Check that the viewport, device scale, capture mode and crop are identical. A full-page capture, viewport capture and element capture will naturally produce different compositions. Also verify that the final resizing step uses the same aspect ratio and crop position for every image.
The uploaded image is rejected or its URL behaves unexpectedly
Check the file’s format, size and pixel dimensions against the limit for its Shopify destination. Rename files that end in thumb, small or large using neutral wording, then test the final URL; Shopify says such suffixes can be treated as CDN transformation requests.

The Shopify and Playwright documentation cited here describes general image and browser behavior; it does not set India-specific thumbnail dimensions, browser settings or hosting requirements. The same capture workflow can be used for stores in India, but the cited technical sources do not resolve whether a particular storefront may legally be captured or republished. Review applicable terms, rights, privacy issues and jurisdiction-specific requirements before operating a public directory.
