Prepare the directory job
Run capture requests from a server-side job or queue, not browser code. ScreenshotOne requires an access key, and its setup guidance recommends HTTPS to protect credentials and other sensitive request data in transit. Keep the key in a server-side secret or environment variable; do not send it to the browser.

Before queuing a URL, validate and normalize it, then associate it with the directory record that will display its thumbnail. Treat each URL as an independent outcome: one inaccessible site should not prevent other records from receiving previews. Provide a fallback thumbnail for failed captures.

Submit multiple URLs with POST /bulk
The bulk endpoint accepts a JSON POST body containing a requests list. Put settings shared by the directory in options; an individual request can supply options that override those defaults. This example illustrates the request shape. Replace the sample URLs and image bounds with values appropriate for your directory, and supply the access key from your server’s secret configuration.

Choose thumbnail dimensions that fit the card
Set image_width and image_height to the maximum bounds your directory card can display. ScreenshotOne resizes the screenshot to dimensions no greater than those limits while preserving its aspect ratio. The resulting image may therefore be smaller than one of the requested bounds; reserve a consistent display area in the UI and use an appropriate background or crop there if uniform card dimensions are required.

Choose bounds based on the rendered card and the detail you need, rather than requesting unnecessarily large files for small previews. If a specific record needs different dimensions or capture settings, use that request’s options to override the shared defaults.
Decide when captures should execute
Default lazy behavior
By default, the bulk request does not mean every image has already been rendered when the response arrives. Captures are taken when the returned screenshot URLs are downloaded. This can suit a workflow that retrieves images as needed, but your job must actually download the returned URLs if it expects the captures to run.

Eager execution
Set execute to true when you want ScreenshotOne to complete the requests before returning the bulk response. Allow enough time for the captures to finish, and design the job to handle waiting and failures rather than treating a slow response as proof that the whole batch failed.
Collect and persist the thumbnails
Map each bulk result back to its directory record and handle outcomes per URL. If your directory needs durable thumbnails, save the generated files in storage you control and keep the resulting asset reference on the directory record. Do not confuse ScreenshotOne’s service-side caching with your own persistent asset storage: they answer different needs.
When no cache or storage option is enabled, ScreenshotOne’s caching guide says screenshots are rendered on demand and returned without being stored on its infrastructure. The same guide describes a four-hour default cache when caching is enabled and a configurable time-to-live of up to one month. Control throughput for large directories
Bulk is a convenience wrapper, not a separate unlimited processing lane. ScreenshotOne’s documentation says bulk requests use the same one-minute request bucket as regular screenshot requests. Before draining a large queue, consult the service’s usage information for remaining concurrency and reset time, then pace work accordingly.

A single bulk request can simplify submission. A controlled queue may be a better operational fit when you need bounded concurrency, retries, per-URL failure tracking, or gradual processing. The documentation does not establish one universally best approach; choose based on the directory’s workload and failure-handling needs. Troubleshoot common problems
- Unauthorized or rejected request: confirm the access key is present, valid, and sent using the authentication method required by the current API documentation. Keep it server-side and call the API over HTTPS.
- No thumbnails appear after the bulk response: check whether you relied on the default lazy behavior. Download the returned screenshot URLs, or submit the documented
execute: truesetting if the job needs captures completed before the response. - Images do not match the card’s exact dimensions:
image_widthandimage_heightare maximum bounds and preserve aspect ratio; they do not promise stretching to an exact rectangle. Fit, crop, or pad the asset in your display layer if the design requires fixed card geometry. - Some sites have no usable preview: record and handle each URL’s result independently, retry only according to your queue policy, and show a fallback thumbnail for sites that cannot be captured.
- A large batch stalls or exceeds expected limits: check usage and remaining concurrency, including the documented one-minute bucket shared by bulk and regular requests. Reduce concurrency or split the work into paced queue batches.
- Images are not available later: determine whether you enabled service caching or storage. For durable directory assets, save the rendered files in your own storage rather than assuming an on-demand response persists.
