A completed navigation does not guarantee that a client-rendered heading, hero image, or other visual target is ready. Set the intended viewport, wait for a meaningful page signal, and capture the viewport, full page, or target element as needed.
Choose a navigation milestone, then wait for the page content
page.goto() defaults to waiting for the load event. Playwright also supports commit, domcontentloaded, and networkidle. These describe browser or network states; none necessarily means that the content you want to show has finished rendering. The Playwright Page API recommends assessing readiness with assertions rather than treating network idleness as a general readiness test.

commitresolves when the response is received and document loading starts.domcontentloadedwaits for the document’s DOM content-loaded event.loadwaits for the load event and is the default.networkidlemeans there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms. Playwright discourages using it as a test readiness strategy.
For a thumbnail, identify a visible element that represents readiness—such as the page heading or hero image—and wait for it after navigation. Network quiet does not prove that the visual content you need is present.
Capture a thumbnail with JavaScript
This template sets a thumbnail-sized viewport, proceeds after DOM content is loaded, waits for the expected heading, and saves the visible viewport as a PNG. Replace the heading locator with a real readiness signal on the target site.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 }
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
});
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: /expected page title/i }).waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The example demonstrates the documented workflow; it is not a tested recipe for every website. If the heading is not a reliable signal, wait for another element or condition that corresponds to the image you intend to capture. See the Page API for navigation and screenshot options.
Choose the right screenshot scope
Playwright’s screenshot methods capture different areas, so decide what the thumbnail must show before setting options. The Playwright screenshots guide documents file output, full-page capture, buffers, and element screenshots.

- Viewport:
page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' })captures the visible browser viewport. - Full scrollable page:
page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true })captures the full page. - One element:
page.locator('.hero').screenshot({ path: 'hero.png' })captures the selected element. Replace.herowith a selector that exists on the page. - Image processing: screenshots can be returned as a buffer instead of written to a file; see the screenshot API options for the relevant method.
Set viewport dimensions for the destination where the thumbnail will appear. Playwright’s cited guidance does not prescribe one universal thumbnail size.
Make slow-page waits reliable
Wait for the content, not an arbitrary duration
Prefer locator waits or web-first assertions for a heading, image, or other element that should appear in the finished thumbnail. Playwright documents waitForSelector, but marks it discouraged in favor of locator and assertion-based waiting. Fixed sleeps such as page.waitForTimeout(5000) are also discouraged: they make the capture depend on a guessed delay and can be flaky when the page loads more slowly or quickly than expected.

Set a failure policy
If the required target never appears, let the relevant operation time out and report the failure, or deliberately produce a fallback image. Do not silently treat a missing target as a successful thumbnail. Navigation and locator waits support timeouts; a selector wait throws if the requested state is not reached. Choose timeout values according to your own capture workflow rather than assuming a universal value.
Retry only for a reason
A retry can be useful when a failure is transient, but it does not fix a selector that never matches or content that the page does not provide. Keep failures visible in logs or results, and avoid an unlimited retry loop that hides a persistently broken capture.

Troubleshoot common slow-page failures
- Navigation completes, but the thumbnail is blank or incomplete: The chosen navigation milestone may have occurred before client-rendered content appeared. Wait for the specific heading, image, or other visual target.
- The capture hangs at
networkidle: The site may keep network connections open. Use a locator or assertion for the content needed in the image instead. - The locator wait times out: Check that the selector or accessible heading name matches the page, and confirm that the target is expected to appear for this URL. If it is not guaranteed, handle the timeout as a failed capture or use an intentional fallback.
- The image is cropped unexpectedly: A normal page screenshot captures the viewport. Use
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page or a locator screenshot for one element. - The capture takes longer than expected: Check which stage is waiting—navigation or the visual target—and set timeouts and failure handling deliberately. A fixed sleep may add delay without confirming that the page is ready.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, and it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the API documentation for options and response details.
