Send an HTTPS POST request to Browserless’s /screenshot endpoint, pass your API token in the token query parameter, and put the page URL and capture settings in a JSON body. The response is image bytes, so save it as a file rather than trying to parse it as JSON.
Make a basic screenshot request
Browserless’s documented example uses the production-sfo.browserless.io host. Use the endpoint and region assigned to your account if they differ. Get a real API token from the Browserless dashboard and keep it private; in applications, store it in an environment variable or secret store rather than committing it to source control. The request method is POST, the body is JSON, and cURL’s --output writes the binary response directly to screenshot.png. PNG is the documented default; options.type can also select JPEG or WebP.

Choose the capture you need
Capture the viewport or the full page
Without full-page capture, the image represents the visible browser viewport. Set options.fullPage to true to capture the whole page.

Capture a specific element or rectangle
To capture one element, put selector at the top level beside url. Browserless waits for that element and crops to its bounding box:

}Wait for dynamic content
If a page renders content after navigation, configure a documented wait before capture: wait for an event, a selector, a function, or a timeout. For example, a selector wait is useful when a page has a clear readiness marker. Browserless’s launch-parameter FAQ suggests increasing waitForTimeout or using waitForSelector if the request returns before content is ready. Avoid arbitrary delays when a specific selector or event can signal readiness more reliably.
Scroll to trigger lazy-loaded content
Set top-level scrollPage to true to scroll through the page before capture. For a long-page image, pair it with options.fullPage: true; scrolling can prompt lazy-loaded elements to appear before the full-page capture.

To capture markup you provide rather than navigate to a URL, send html in the body. Do not send url in the same request when using html.
Inject styles or scripts
The screenshot guide documents addStyleTag and addScriptTag for injecting content before capture. These are optional ways to adjust a page for a particular capture, not prerequisites for a basic request.

Use launch parameters when needed
Individual browser launch parameters can be passed in the query string. More complex settings can be sent through a JSON launch parameter, which must be URL-encoded or base64-encoded. If a setting appears both as an individual query parameter and in the launch payload, the individual query parameter takes precedence. Confirm that a parameter is supported by the endpoint you are calling before relying on it; see the Launch Parameters reference.

The screenshot endpoint returns image data, not a JSON result object. Save or process the response as binary data. Browserless describes REST APIs as stateless, single-action requests: each request launches a browser, performs one task, and closes the session; cookies and state are discarded after the response. A workflow that needs a persistent session, multiple interactions, or real-time branching is better suited to Browserless session or BrowserQL approaches described in its REST APIs overview.

The launch-parameter reference lists a default timeout of 60,000 milliseconds; the maximum depends on the plan. That default is not a universal maximum.
Troubleshoot blank, incomplete, or blocked captures
- Blank or incomplete page: The page may not have finished rendering. Wait for a meaningful selector or event, or adjust the timeout. If content loads as the page scrolls, enable
scrollPageand use full-page capture. - Missing element: Check that the selector matches the page’s actual markup and wait for it before capture. If you need a fixed area rather than an element, use
options.clip. - CAPTCHA, access-denied, or 403 page: Browserless notes that CAPTCHA pages, white images, access-denied responses, and missing or broken elements compared with an ordinary browser can indicate automation blocking. Its documentation points to the
/unblockendpoint for some bot-detection cases and mentions residential proxies, but neither guarantees access to every protected site. See the Screenshot API guidance. - Unexpected output handling: Treat the response as binary image bytes and write it to a file or binary destination; do not attempt to decode it as JSON.
- Need multiple actions or retained cookies: A stateless screenshot call discards browser state when it finishes. Use a persistent Browserless mode for workflows requiring state across interactions.
