Scroll the element that paints the CSS background into view, then wait for a page-specific signal that the image resource is ready before taking the screenshot. A successful page.goto(), the page’s load event, or a full-page capture alone does not guarantee that a lazy-loaded background has arrived.
Why a lazy-loaded background can be missing
Sites often defer images until an element approaches the viewport. One common mechanism is IntersectionObserver, which can trigger a background URL to be applied only after the element enters view. Navigating to a page and waiting for its initial load may therefore finish before that background request even begins.

A CSS background belongs to an element’s computed style; it is not an HTMLImageElement. The complete property used to inspect an <img> load state does not exist on the background’s owning element. You need to trigger the site’s loading condition and check a signal appropriate to that site.

- Navigate to the page. Choose a navigation wait condition suited to the page’s initial state. Playwright’s
page.goto()supportscommit,domcontentloaded,load, andnetworkidle;loadis the default. - Find the element that paints the background. Use the selector for the relevant hero, card, or other component.
- Trigger the site’s lazy-load behavior. If loading is viewport-dependent, scroll the element into view. If the site uses another trigger, reproduce that trigger instead.
- Wait for evidence that the intended background is ready. Prefer an application-defined loaded class or state that is set after successful loading. You can also check the computed style for the expected URL, but URL presence alone does not prove the image finished loading or painted. If necessary, add a resource-aware completion check for the actual image request.
- Capture the required area. Use a locator screenshot for one component, a page screenshot for the viewport, or
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page.
JavaScript example: scroll, check the CSS URL, and capture
This adaptable template assumes the page has already been opened with a Playwright page object. Replace .hero and hero-image.webp with values from the target site. It verifies that the computed style refers to the expected asset, but the comment marks where to add the site’s stronger loaded-state or resource-completion check.

Make visual captures more repeatable
For visual regression tests, Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing them. That stabilization helps with visual consistency, but it is not a general-purpose detector that a particular remote background image has loaded. Pair it with the target-specific loading condition when the background matters to the comparison.

Playwright documents networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms, but discourages using it as a testing readiness strategy and recommends assertions tied to the state under test. A quiet network does not establish that an offscreen background was requested, and unrelated network activity may prevent the page from becoming idle.
Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent backgrounds
- The screenshot has an empty background. Confirm the selector points to the element with the background, then scroll it into view if viewport entry triggers loading.
- The computed style has no expected URL. The site may set the style only after a trigger, use a different asset URL, or apply the background to a different element. Inspect the target element and reproduce the site’s actual loading condition.
- The URL is present but pixels are still missing. Computed style indicates the CSS URL, not completed loading or painting. Wait for an application-defined success state or check completion of the corresponding resource before capture.
page.goto()completed, but the background did not load. Navigation completion covers the initial page lifecycle; it does not guarantee that deferred resources have been requested. Explicitly trigger and verify the target image.networkidletimes out or gives a false sense of readiness. Persistent requests can keep the page active, while an offscreen image may not have started loading. Replace this as the image-ready condition with a targeted assertion.- A full-page screenshot still omits the asset. Full-page scope changes the captured area, not the site’s loading behavior. Trigger and verify the resource before taking the full-page image.

Does scrolling into view guarantee a CSS background will load?
No. It triggers loading only when that matches the site’s implementation; verify the target resource or an application-defined loaded state.

Can I use an element’s complete property for a CSS background?
No. That property belongs to HTMLImageElement; a CSS background is not an image element.
