To generate a website screenshot or PDF, send a URL (or supported HTML) to a hosted browser-rendering API and save its binary response. Choose a screenshot for a visual capture of the page; choose PDF when you need print-style pages and selectable text. For custom browser control, run Playwright yourself. The right wait condition, capture scope, and print settings matter as much as the request.
How do I take a screenshot of a website with an API?
A screenshot API loads a page in a browser and returns a rendered image, commonly PNG, JPEG, or WebP. A hosted API avoids maintaining the browser infrastructure; Playwright is an option when you need direct control over browser behavior and lifecycle. For a hosted API, check its current request format, authentication method, output options, limits, and target-site compatibility before building around it.

Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: captures only the visible browser area at the configured viewport size.
- Full page: aims to capture the document’s scrollable content. Full-page capture may need scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded images and other content.
- Element: captures a selected element when the provider supports selector-based capture.
- Clip: captures a specified region when the provider supports clipping.
Set viewport dimensions and device emulation to match the presentation you need. A mobile-sized viewport, for example, can produce a different layout from a desktop-sized one; neither should be treated as a neutral default.

Make a hosted request safely
Provider request formats differ. Browserless documents screenshot requests that accept a URL or HTML, but not both in the same request body; it uses a token for authentication. ScreenshotOne requires an access key. Keep credentials on a server or another protected execution context rather than in publicly distributed frontend code, and use HTTPS so requests are encrypted. Save the response as binary data, not as a text string. Check its content type and open the resulting image to confirm it contains the intended page rather than a challenge screen, error page, or blank capture.
How do I convert a URL to PDF?
Use a provider’s PDF endpoint or browser PDF method when you want a print-oriented document. Browserless says its PDF endpoint uses Chrome’s print engine, producing selectable text rather than a screenshot image. Playwright’s PDF method uses print CSS media by default. Set paper size, margins, page ranges, landscape orientation, and background-print behavior according to the document you want; these settings affect pagination and appearance.
Print output and screen-like output are different
Print rendering can change colors and omit backgrounds. In Playwright, call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before generating a PDF if you want screen media styles. Playwright also documents -webkit-print-color-adjust for forcing exact colors. ScreenshotOne documents media_type=screen and pdf_print_background=true; its PDF background-print option defaults to false. A full-page image is not automatically a continuous PDF
A full-page screenshot is usually one tall image. A normal PDF is paginated according to print layout. Browserless explicitly states that its REST /pdf endpoint does not create a single continuous page for the entire website; its documentation points to a custom-function workflow if continuous output is essential. ScreenshotOne documents a fit-to-one-page option, which may suit some cases. Confirm that the resulting size and layout are usable before relying on it.
Browserless also documents tagged PDF output, but says the quality depends on the source markup and that tagged output is not certified PDF/UA. See its PDF API documentation for endpoint behavior.
How do I capture a full webpage reliably?
- Choose URL or HTML. Send the public page URL, or raw HTML when rendering content you generate. Browserless accepts either URL or HTML for its screenshot and PDF endpoints; do not send both in the same request body.
- Pick viewport and scope. Decide whether the output should show the viewport, the full document, a selector, or a fixed clip. Match the viewport and device emulation to the intended display.
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Navigation completion does not guarantee that client-rendered content, fonts, or images are ready. Use a selector, event, function, or delay appropriate to the page and API. Browserless documents wait controls and scrolling before capture.
- Trigger lazy content when needed. Scroll through the page before taking a full-page capture if content loads as it enters view. Check that images and below-the-fold sections actually appeared.
- Inspect the output. Open the saved image or PDF and look for overlays, missing elements, unintended pagination, blank areas, or an access-denied page.
Some sites block automated browsers and may return a CAPTCHA, access-denied screen, blank page, or broken elements. A screenshot API cannot guarantee that every target will render normally. Browserless describes these failure patterns and wait/scroll options in its screenshot documentation.

Compare formats, viewport and selector support, full-page behavior, wait controls, PDF pagination and background printing, session handling, and whether your specific page renders reliably. The documented options do not establish a general price, speed, or reliability winner. Browserless notes that its REST calls are independent and do not retain session state between responses; multi-step flows that click or fill forms need a session/workflow capability or direct browser automation. - Automation was blocked: the site may have served a CAPTCHA, access-denied page, or empty response instead of the expected page. Inspect the returned image and page verdict before treating it as a successful capture.
- The capture happened too early: wait for a page-specific selector or other meaningful ready state instead of relying only on navigation completion.
- Lazy content never loaded: scroll the document to trigger loading before a full-page capture.
- The requested scope missed the content: confirm that the viewport, selector, or clip matches the element and layout you intended.
- PDF styling differs from the screen: print CSS can change color or hide backgrounds; set screen media or background printing when that matches your goal.
Validate the actual returned file and response metadata. A successful HTTP response alone does not prove that the page rendered as intended.

Can a screenshot API render JavaScript?
Browser-based screenshot APIs render pages in a browser, so they can capture client-rendered content when the page has loaded and the request waits for the necessary state. They do not guarantee that every JavaScript application finishes in time or that a site will allow automated access. Use a selector or other page-specific wait, trigger lazy loading if necessary, and inspect the result for missing content or bot challenges.

Can I capture a page that requires clicking or signing in?
A single REST capture may not preserve browser state across requests. For multi-step interactions, use a provider workflow or session feature if available, or control the browser directly with Playwright.
Will a PDF look exactly like the screenshot?
Not necessarily. PDFs use print layout and pagination unless configured otherwise; print media can change colors, backgrounds, and layout. Set the desired media and background options and inspect the exported file.
