To show thumbnails beside a list of URLs in Google Sheets, put a direct, accessible image URL in one column and enter =IMAGE(A2) in the adjacent cell. Fill the formula down to display each image in its own cell. This works with image URLs—not ordinary webpage URLs, which the function does not scan to find a preview image.
Use IMAGE with a direct image URL
- Put a loadable image URL in each row of a column, such as cell A2.
- In the adjacent cell, enter
=IMAGE(A2). - Press Enter, then fill or copy the formula down for the remaining rows. Each row’s formula will refer to the corresponding URL.
Google describes IMAGE as a function that “Inserts an image into a cell.” Its syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]); url can be quoted text or a cell reference, and the default display mode is 1. See Google’s IMAGE function help.

Choose how each thumbnail fits
The optional mode controls how the image is displayed inside its cell:

For example, =IMAGE(A2,4,80,120) requests an image 80 pixels high and 120 pixels wide. Google documents these modes in its IMAGE help and spreadsheet image instructions.

IMAGE does not resize the row or column to fit an image. Adjust row height and column width in Sheets if you need more room; the display mode changes the image presentation, not the cell dimensions.
Why a webpage URL may not produce a thumbnail
=IMAGE(A2) expects a URL that serves an image Sheets can access. A URL to an ordinary webpage is not automatically inspected for its Open Graph image, social preview, or another thumbnail. If your list contains page URLs, first obtain a direct URL for each desired image; the formula alone does not extract one.

Google also says URLs hosted at drive.google.com cannot be used directly as IMAGE inputs. For other hosts, redirects, signed URLs, or access-controlled images, the reviewed documentation does not guarantee compatibility. Test a few representative rows before filling a large sheet.

Troubleshoot blank or missing images
- Nothing appears: Check that the cell contains an image URL rather than a webpage URL, and confirm the address is available to Sheets.
- The image is on Google Drive: A
drive.google.comURL is expressly excluded from the documented IMAGE inputs. Use an image URL from a compatible host instead. - The image is stretched or too large: Try mode 1 to preserve aspect ratio, or mode 4 with explicit pixel dimensions. Adjust the sheet’s row height and column width separately.
- A few rows fail in a large list: Check those URLs individually for access restrictions or redirect behavior. Google’s guidance on external import functions notes access prompts and traffic limits for external data requests, so validate a small sample before applying the formula across a large range.
When to use Apps Script instead
For a straightforward list of direct image URLs, the built-in formula is the simplest route. Apps Script may help when you need a custom menu, repeatable automation, or other steps beyond filling down a formula. Google documents automating tasks in Sheets and macros and add-ons. Those sources do not establish a universal custom function that turns arbitrary webpage URLs into thumbnails, so do not assume a script can identify a suitable image without additional logic.
