Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo generate a social card with Cloudinary, start with an image in your Cloudinary product environment, apply crop and resize transformations for the card canvas, then add text or a logo as an overlay. Set the resulting image URL as the page’s social image metadata and check how it appears in the platform where you plan to share it. Cloudinary’s URL transformations can create the derived image on its first request and cache that output on its CDN.
Build a card from a Cloudinary-hosted image
A Cloudinary delivery URL follows this pattern:
https://res.cloudinary.com/<cloud_name>/<asset_type>/<delivery_type>/<transformations>/<version>/<public_id>.<extension>
Replace the angle-bracketed values with the corresponding values for your Cloudinary asset. Transformation components are optional and can be chained in the URL, separated by slashes. The order matters: Cloudinary applies the transformations in sequence. The first request for a derived image can create it on demand; Cloudinary then caches that output on its CDN.

For example, the base transformation in a Cloudinary-hosted guest tutorial uses w_1200,h_627,c_fill,q_auto,f_auto. It is an example, not a universal current requirement: the appropriate canvas and file requirements depend on the social platform and may change. Check the platform’s current guidance before settling on dimensions or format.
Add a text overlay
Cloudinary’s raw URL syntax uses l_text:<font_family>_<font_size>:<text> to define a text layer. For example, a layer’s text definition can begin with l_text:Arial_60:Your%20headline. Text layers can take styling options. Use URL-safe encoding for text that contains spaces or reserved URL characters; SDK helpers can handle URL construction for you.

To place the text, use gravity and offsets, then close and apply the layer with fl_layer_apply in a separate URL component. The following illustrates the structure; replace the sample values and asset details with your own:
https://res.cloudinary.com/<cloud_name>/image/upload/w_1200,h_627,c_fill,q_auto,f_auto/l_text:Arial_60:Your%20headline,co_white,g_south_west,x_80,y_70/fl_layer_apply/v<version>/<public_id>.jpg
This is a raw-URL pattern, not a guarantee that the sample text will fit every image. Preview the result and adjust the crop, text size, gravity, offsets, and styling for the particular image and title.

A long text layer can extend beyond the card. Constrain the overlay’s width so the text wraps rather than running off the canvas. The exact option syntax can depend on whether you are writing a raw URL or using an SDK; check the relevant Cloudinary transformation reference and SDK documentation for the project’s syntax.
Add a logo or another image layer
Image overlays use l_... syntax and, like text layers, are closed with fl_layer_apply in a separate URL component. Use gravity and offsets to position the logo. When an overlay image’s public ID contains folders, use colons instead of slashes in the overlay ID.
Cloudinary also supports remote image overlays with l_fetch: followed by a base64-encoded remote URL when constructing the URL directly. Cloudinary SDKs can perform that encoding, avoiding manual URL preparation.
Use an SDK or construct the URL yourself
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Raw transformation URL | You want the transformation string visible and portable. | You must construct and encode the URL correctly, including overlay syntax. |
| Cloudinary SDK URL helper | Your application already uses a Cloudinary SDK and you want its URL helper to build the transformation URL. | SDK parameter names may differ from raw URL API syntax; use the documentation for the SDK in your project. |
Cloudinary’s official documentation states: “The Cloudinary SDKs automatically build the transformation URL for you.” SDKs also provide image tag helpers. Cloudinary’s social-media documentation, last updated February 25, 2026, introduces transformations for social media and links to dynamic social-card tutorials for Next.js and Svelte. The transformation URL API reference search result reports an update of September 28, 2026. Check the current documentation for the specific SDK and syntax you use.
Expose the generated image to social platforms
Once you have a card URL, add it to the page’s social image metadata using the metadata mechanism required by your site and target platforms. The available Cloudinary material supports the transformation workflow, but does not establish current metadata syntax, image requirements, or preview behavior for each social network. Check each platform’s current documentation and use its preview or debugging tool to verify the result rather than assuming one image size or metadata setup works everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between dynamic and prebuilt cards
A dynamic Cloudinary transformation lets your application request a card by URL, with Cloudinary generating a derived image on demand and caching it. That can make it straightforward to vary the image or title through the URL. A prebuilt image, by contrast, puts card generation into a build or publishing step rather than requesting a transformation at delivery time. The available Cloudinary guidance establishes on-demand transformations and caching, but does not compare these deployment strategies; choose based on how your site manages content, updates, and image delivery.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Text appears outside the card: constrain the text overlay width to encourage wrapping, then adjust its size, gravity, and offsets.
- A logo overlay is not found: check the overlay public ID. If its ID includes folders, use colons instead of slashes in the overlay ID.
- A remote overlay URL fails: when building a raw URL, encode the remote URL as base64 after
l_fetch:. A Cloudinary SDK can perform that encoding. - The image crop or layout is wrong: verify the canvas dimensions and transformation order, then preview the delivered URL. Chained transformations are applied in order.
- The social preview differs from the image URL: verify the page’s social image metadata and inspect it with the target platform’s current preview/debug tooling. Platform-specific requirements are not established by the Cloudinary transformation syntax alone.
- The raw URL is malformed: check that each transformation component is separated with slashes, that layer syntax is closed using
fl_layer_applyin a separate component, and that text and remote URLs are correctly encoded.

ScreenshotNeo is a way to capture a rendered page as an image or PDF; it is not a replacement for Cloudinary transformations that compose text and logo layers into a social-card image. It can help you inspect a page or preview workflow without setting up a browser capture yourself. One GET request returns a screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
