Use Playwright to set the page viewport to each width your site’s CSS actually responds to, then save a screenshot at each size. There is no universal set of breakpoint widths: inspect the site’s styles, test just below and above relevant breakpoints, and choose viewport-only or full-page capture according to what you need to review.
How to take screenshots at every CSS breakpoint
Playwright can set a browser viewport and capture the page at that size. The responsive widths are yours to define: Playwright does not automatically discover every breakpoint in an arbitrary site. Start with the media queries and other responsive conditions in the project’s CSS, then make an explicit list of widths to test.
- Find the widths that matter. Read the site’s CSS for media queries and identify the points where its layout or content changes. Include a width on each side of a breakpoint when you want to inspect the transition.
- Set the browser viewport. Create a Playwright context or test project with the desired viewport width and height. For a one-off capture, set the page viewport before taking the screenshot.
- Capture and name each image. Use a filename that records the dimensions, such as
home-375x900.pngorhome-768x1024.png. - Choose the capture scope and scale. Use a viewport screenshot to inspect what is visible without scrolling, or a full-page screenshot to capture the whole scrollable page. Keep the scale consistent across images you plan to compare.
- Review the set. Look for overflow, clipped content, unexpected wrapping and changes at the responsive transitions.
Playwright’s Emulation documentation covers viewport configuration and device emulation. Its Page API documents screenshot paths, full-page capture and scaling options.
Use explicit viewport widths or device presets?
For coverage of CSS breakpoints, an explicit list of viewport widths makes it clear which CSS-pixel widths were captured. Device presets are useful when the behavior under test also depends on device characteristics such as user agent, screen size or touch capability. You can apply a device preset and override its viewport when a specific breakpoint width is the priority; Playwright documents that an explicit viewport can take precedence over the preset’s viewport.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
A preset is not a substitute for testing every width you selected from the site’s CSS. Conversely, a width-only sweep does not emulate every device characteristic. Choose based on the behavior you need to check.
Viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots and image scale
Viewport-only or full-page
A regular screenshot shows the current viewport. Set fullPage: true when you need the entire scrollable page in one image. These capture scopes answer different review questions: a full-page image shows the page’s overall content, while viewport images help inspect how a layout appears at a particular screen size.

CSS pixels or device pixels
Playwright’s screenshot scale can be set to CSS-pixel or device-pixel output. CSS scaling produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scaling uses device pixels and can create larger images on high-density displays. Use the same scale for the whole comparison set so image dimensions remain interpretable.
Example Playwright script for a viewport sweep
The following Node.js example uses the Playwright package. It captures a page at each supplied viewport size and writes dimensioned PNG files. Replace the example URL and viewport list with your page and the widths derived from its CSS. The capture is viewport-only; set fullPage: true if you need the complete scrollable page.

The sample includes widths on either side of 768 pixels to illustrate transition testing, not a recommendation that 768 pixels is a universal breakpoint. Replace the list with the breakpoints and neighboring widths relevant to your site. Playwright documents a 1280-by-720 viewport configuration example; the sizes above are merely illustrative.
When device emulation belongs in the test
Use a device preset if you need to exercise behavior tied to a device’s user agent, screen size or touch capability. Playwright provides a device-parameter registry and supports overriding the preset viewport for a particular test. If you only want to verify responsive CSS at chosen widths, a viewport sweep is the more direct and transparent method. See Playwright’s emulation guide for device setup.

Troubleshooting screenshot sweeps
- The screenshots miss a layout change. Check the site’s actual CSS conditions and add widths immediately below and above the relevant threshold. Do not assume a standard phone, tablet and desktop set covers every transition.
- Images differ in size or are hard to compare. Confirm that every capture uses the same viewport height and screenshot scale. CSS scale maps one output pixel to one CSS pixel; device scale can yield larger images.
- Content below the fold is absent. The default viewport capture is not the entire page. Set
fullPage: truefor full scrollable-page capture. - A layout behaves differently on a real device than in a width-only run. Add the relevant device preset if user agent, screen size or touch behavior is part of the feature being checked, and override the viewport only when necessary.
- The page is still changing when the screenshot is taken. Wait for the page state you need before capture; for dynamic pages, use a deliberate wait condition suited to the content rather than assuming a width setting alone makes the page stable.

ScreenshotNeo takes a website screenshot from one GET request and also provides an MCP server for AI agents. Its documented options include viewport dimensions, full-page capture, device presets, image format, and wait conditions. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
For a repeatable width sweep, make one request per viewport width, supplying the corresponding viewport parameters. The request above shows the basic call; consult the docs for the exact option names and supported values.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright find all of a website’s CSS breakpoints automatically?
No. Read the site’s responsive CSS and choose the widths to capture; Playwright configures viewports and takes screenshots.
Should I capture one width per breakpoint?
For a transition check, capture widths on both sides of the breakpoint, not only a single representative width.
Can I capture every width between a minimum and maximum?
Yes. Provide a list or generate a range of viewport widths in your script; choose the interval based on how closely you need to inspect responsive changes.
