How to Test an Indian Insurance Website at an iPhone Viewport Size

Use Safari on a Mac’s Responsive Design Mode to check how an Indian insurance page lays out at a chosen iPhone-sized CSS viewport, then verify device-specific behavior in the iOS Simulator or on a real iPhone. A screenshot shows one rendered state; it does not prove that forms, touch controls, the keyboard, accessibility, or an insurance transaction work.

Choose the iPhone profile and viewport to test

There is no single universal “iPhone screenshot resolution.” The CSS viewport that informs page layout, the device pixel ratio, and the screenshot’s bitmap dimensions are separate values. Record the CSS width and height and the selected device profile; do not report only the image’s pixel dimensions. Apple’s Responsive Design Mode supports editable dimensions, pixel-ratio selection, and rotation, but its presets are approximations rather than exact replicas of a device (Apple: Responsive Design Mode). An archived Apple guide explains how the viewport affects layout and text wrapping, including the iOS-oriented width=device-width viewport setting (Apple: Safari HTML Reference).

Get the intended iPhone model, operating-system version, and target viewport from the project brief or audience data. If those are not specified, state which profile and dimensions you chose rather than implying they cover all iPhones. Pixel ratio changes raster output and can affect image selection; it does not, by itself, set the CSS layout width.

Capture a repeatable screenshot in Safari Responsive Design Mode

  1. Open the insurance page in Safari on macOS. If the Develop menu is missing, enable Safari’s developer features in Safari settings.
  2. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode.
  3. Select a device preset or enter the intended viewport width and height in screen points. Choose a pixel ratio appropriate to the device profile, and rotate the preview if you need to inspect landscape.
  4. Set up the page state you want to assess: for example, the initial page view or a page with a consent banner visible. Record whether overlays were present; dismissing a banner can materially change the layout.
  5. Capture the screenshot using your normal macOS screenshot method. Record the URL, date, browser, viewport dimensions, pixel ratio, selected profile, and page state alongside the image. This is a reproducibility recommendation, not a screenshot format mandated by Apple.
  6. Inspect the image for clipped content, horizontal overflow, hard-to-read text, overlapping controls, hidden navigation, low-visibility calls to action, and layout shifts caused by overlays.

Review insurance content at narrow widths

Insurance pages can contain long labels, dense benefit and exclusion text, quote or premium forms, document links, and privacy or consent overlays. Check each item that is actually present on the page you are testing; a screenshot does not establish that a quote was submitted or a document link works.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Check that labels and explanatory text wrap without covering values, buttons, or other controls.
  • Look for sideways scrolling, clipped columns, and content hidden behind fixed headers, footers, or banners.
  • Make sure important actions, such as continuing a quote or finding help, remain visible and distinguishable in the captured state.
  • Where appropriate, use 320 CSS pixels as a narrow-screen horizontal-scroll review point. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps (GIGW) accessibility guidance includes a responsive-design checkpoint about avoiding horizontal scrolling at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels for content intended to scroll horizontally (GIGW accessibility guidance). That government guidance is not, on its own, proof of a legal requirement for every private insurer.

Know what the screenshot cannot verify

A static capture records appearance at a particular moment. It cannot show whether tapping a control works, whether a form validates or submits, what happens when the software keyboard opens, or whether content remains usable as the browser’s visible area changes. It also cannot establish accessibility or the success of a policy purchase or other insurance transaction.

Apple cautions that Responsive Design Mode presets are approximations and points to Simulator for a more accurate iOS preview. Use the iOS Simulator when behavior may depend on Safari, the address bar, keyboard, form fields, or the viewport meta tag. Use a real iPhone with Safari when you need to check actual touch interaction or the intended device environment; one model and operating-system combination still does not represent every iPhone. Apple documents Safari inspection and testing involving iPhone (Apple: Inspecting iOS). For responsive layouts, accessibility, and touch support, follow up with interaction and accessibility checks rather than treating visual appearance as proof (Apple: Safari Web Content Guide).

Pick the next test method by the question you need answered

Method Useful for Main limitation
Safari Responsive Design Mode Quick resizing, media-query review, pixel-ratio experiments, and initial screenshots Approximation; may miss device-specific iOS behavior. Apple documentation
iOS Simulator A more accurate iOS rendering and behavior preview without a physical phone Still a simulator, not the exact target hardware and deployment environment. Apple documentation
Real iPhone with Safari Actual-device interaction and the intended Safari environment Requires hardware; one model and OS combination does not cover all iPhones. Apple documentation

Choose based on fidelity, whether you need to exercise touch, forms, or the keyboard, repeatability, and access. A physical iPhone is an optional escalation for device-specific validation, not a prerequisite for the initial viewport review.

Troubleshoot common viewport-test problems

  • The preview does not match the phone: Responsive Design Mode is an approximation. Compare in Simulator, then use a real iPhone if the remaining question depends on actual hardware or Safari behavior.
  • The page wraps differently than expected: Confirm the CSS viewport width and height, not just the screenshot bitmap dimensions. Check the page’s viewport configuration and record the pixel ratio separately.
  • A control is covered or the page shifts: Record whether a consent banner, popup, or other overlay is present and capture the state that matters. Check the page again after the overlay is dismissed if both states are relevant.
  • A form looks fine in the image but may not work: Test field focus, validation, keyboard appearance, touch targets, and submission in Simulator or on a real device. The screenshot alone cannot answer those questions.
  • Only one orientation has been checked: Repeat the layout review in landscape when that orientation matters to the use case.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can capture a page as an image or PDF; the example below requests an image at a viewport width and height. Replace the example URL and dimensions with the page and profile you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
