Build the receipt as localized HTML
Use transaction data to populate a complete HTML document, then convert that document to PDF. This lets you control the receipt’s labels, language, layout, and font in one place. Localize the content, not just the heading: consider the seller and customer details, item descriptions, tax labels, dates, currency presentation, totals, and any payment instructions. Encode the document as UTF-8 and escape values inserted from user or transaction data so that special characters cannot break the markup.

</html>The sample font URL is illustrative: point it to a font file your conversion request can access, or embed the font data in CSS. Do not assume that a font supports every character simply because it displays some text in the target language.
Choose how PDFShift receives the font
PDFShift supports custom fonts supplied through CSS in the request. Its font guidance warns that externally loaded fonts can be intermittent and presents local hosting or base64 font data as more consistent approaches. The trade-off is between keeping the request small and easy to maintain versus reducing dependence on a separate font request. Consult PDFShift’s custom-font guide for the documented options.

For a receipt with multiple scripts, define appropriate font fallbacks and confirm that each font covers the characters it is expected to render. A fallback that works for Latin text may not cover the target script.

Submit raw HTML to PDFShift
Send the document as the API request’s source, along with your API key. Keep the key on your server or in a secret store: PDFShift’s Make integration guide warns against calling the API directly from front-end JavaScript with a secret key. See the Make integration guide and PDFShift.

Verify the generated PDF with real receipt data
Font configuration is not proof that the final PDF renders correctly. PDFShift’s reviewed sources describe custom font loading but do not establish blanket support for every Indian script, shaping behavior, or glyph sequence. Generate and inspect sample PDFs using the actual font and representative content before enabling a language in production.
- Check conjuncts, combining marks, vowel signs, punctuation, and numerals in the target script.
- Review line wrapping, alignment, totals, and page breaks with realistic item names and seller details.
- Open the PDF in the viewers your customers are likely to use; where relevant, check text selection and extraction as well as appearance.
- Test mixed-script content and fallback behavior if a receipt includes more than one script.
These are validation steps to catch font and layout problems; they are not results of a test performed here.
Handle receipt data and conversion costs carefully
PDFShift’s FAQ says standard conversions do not store requests or generated documents. It also says using the filename parameter stores generated documents on its Amazon S3 storage, and that users can send documents to their own S3 storage. Verify the current privacy and retention terms for the exact request mode before sending personal or financial receipt information. See PDFShift’s FAQ.

The same FAQ, current at access in 2026, says new accounts can use 50 credits per month free and gives a Boost example of $24 per month for 2,500 credits. PDFShift states one credit covers one conversion up to 5 MB. These are vendor-stated, time-sensitive plan details rather than a durable guarantee; check current pricing before estimating recurring costs.

Characters appear as boxes or disappear
- Likely cause: The selected font does not include the needed glyphs, or it did not load.
- Fix: Confirm the font’s script coverage and use a locally hosted or base64 font as PDFShift recommends for more consistent loading than an external font URL. Regenerate the PDF and inspect it.
Some words work but conjuncts or marks look wrong
- Likely cause: The font or the conversion path may not render the specific script sequence as required. The reviewed PDFShift documentation does not establish a universal shaping guarantee.
- Fix: Test the exact language text with the intended font and PDF output. Do not ship based on a Latin-only or short sample.
The PDF is missing layout or content
- Likely cause: A font or other resource referenced by the HTML was not reachable, or external dependencies did not load as expected.
- Fix: Prefer inline CSS where practical and use a reachable local font URL or base64 data. PDFShift’s raw-HTML guide explains that sending HTML directly avoids the separate fetch needed for a hosted source page.
The request exposes a secret key
- Likely cause: The conversion call runs in browser-side JavaScript.
- Fix: Move the call to a backend or protected server-side workflow and keep the key in a secret store.
