FFmpeg’s reconnect_* options discussed here apply to its HTTP protocol, so they can retry an HTTP-hosted input; they do not, by themselves, reconnect an RTMP(S) publishing output or restart a YouTube Live event. Put HTTP options before the matching -i. For a finite video, normal end-of-file (EOF) is expected—leave reconnect_at_eof off unless you deliberately want EOF treated as an error.
That distinction is the key to configuring a prerecorded broadcast: decide what should recover (the input, the publishing connection, or the event), then test that behavior separately. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and YouTube’s encoder settings.

Identify what FFmpeg needs to reconnect
The HTTP reconnect controls are input-side options for an HTTP URL. They are relevant when FFmpeg reads a remote file or stream over HTTP and that connection fails. They are not general-purpose retries for a local file, nor do they ensure that FFmpeg can resume publishing after its connection to YouTube is interrupted.

A finite file normally reaches EOF and finishes.
- HTTP-hosted prerecorded file: HTTP reconnect options may help recover the input connection. Decide separately what should happen when the file reaches EOF.
- Endless or live HTTP source: A retry at EOF may be appropriate if EOF is itself an error for that source.
- YouTube publishing: This is a separate output connection and event-state problem. Do not infer output recovery from input retry settings.
FFmpeg’s HTTP option definitions are in its protocol documentation. The installed binary and build matter; check the options it actually supports with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.

Choose HTTP reconnect options deliberately
Place an input’s protocol options before that input’s -i. For example, this illustrative command reads an HTTP-hosted file with a 30-second maximum reconnect delay:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30
-i 'https://example.invalid/video.mp4'
... your chosen codecs, mappings, and YouTube output ...
The example’s delay cap is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. Replace the example URL and the unfinished output portion with values suited to your source and event. These flags only configure the HTTP input; they do not guarantee uninterrupted playback.

| Option | Documented purpose | Use with care |
|---|---|---|
reconnect |
Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF. | It does not make normal EOF an error. |
reconnect_streamed |
Allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable sources. | Use when the HTTP source is streamed/non-seekable; do not assume it applies to local file errors. |
reconnect_at_eof |
Treat EOF as an error and reconnect; documented as useful for live or endless streams. | For a finite file that should play once and finish, leave it off unless retrying or restarting at EOF is explicitly intended. |
reconnect_on_network_error |
Reconnect on TCP/TLS errors during connection. | Confirm behavior against the installed FFmpeg build and your source. |
reconnect_on_http_error |
Retry selected HTTP response codes, including specific statuses or classes such as 4xx or 5xx. |
Choose statuses intentionally; retrying an error response is not a fix for an unavailable or unauthorized source. |
reconnect_delay_max |
Cap the reconnect delay. | Choose a cap appropriate to the event; the example’s value is not a blanket recommendation. |
reconnect_max_retries |
Cap the retry count. | Set a finite limit if the process should eventually stop rather than retry indefinitely. |
reconnect_delay_total_max |
Cap total reconnect delay. | Useful when the total time spent waiting should be bounded. |
respect_retry_after |
Honor a server’s Retry-After header when applicable. |
It matters only when the server provides that header. |
Do not enable every option by rote. In particular, enabling reconnect_at_eof changes the meaning of an ordinary EOF and can cause unwanted retry or restart-like behavior for finite media. The HTTP options do not establish recovery behavior for local-file I/O failures.

Keep input recovery separate from YouTube output recovery
YouTube’s standard encoder guidance describes RTMP/RTMPS ingest, while the reconnect options above belong to FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol. An HTTP retry before -i does not itself reconnect an RTMP(S) output, resume a stopped YouTube event, or ensure gapless continuation after a publishing interruption. The exact behavior depends on the FFmpeg build, output protocol, and event settings; test the combination you intend to use.

Before configuring a broadcast, decide what the process should do if it stops: finish the event, restart the file from the beginning, resume from a known position, or alert an operator. Those are distinct recovery requirements, not interchangeable meanings of “reconnect.”
Verify YouTube ingest settings and protect the stream key
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the bitrate table on that page for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate instead of assuming one bitrate fits all settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for managing them.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or shared scripts. Where possible, keep secrets out of command lines; rotate a compromised key through YouTube Studio.
- Confirm the output protocol, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format against the selected event and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Test the full workflow before the scheduled broadcast
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, previewing the incoming stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, setting up ahead of time, and testing encoder failover. The 20% figure is YouTube operational guidance, not a measured guarantee.
- Confirm whether the source is local or HTTP-hosted, and whether it is finite or endless.
- Check the installed FFmpeg version and the HTTP options available in that build.
- Verify the source path, output protocol, stream URL and key, codec settings, and intended EOF behavior.
- Test a representative segment and observe whether it ends, restarts, or resumes as intended.
- In a controlled test, interrupt the source or network. Observe separately whether input reading recovers, whether publishing remains connected, and what viewers see.
- Preview the event, monitor stream health, and test any independent backup or failover process.
- Decide who responds if the event stops and what recovery action they should take.
YouTube’s streaming tips state: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” This is a recommendation, not a promise of uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot the failure at the layer where it occurs
- FFmpeg stops at the end of the file: A finite file reaching EOF is normal. If it should finish, leave
reconnect_at_eofoff. If it should repeat or resume, configure and test that behavior explicitly rather than treating every EOF as a network failure. - An HTTP source disconnects before EOF: Confirm that the HTTP options are before the matching
-i, check the source URL and access, and verify available options withffmpeg -h protocol=http. Retry behavior depends on the server response and installed FFmpeg build. - A local source fails to read: HTTP reconnect flags are not a general remedy for local-file I/O errors. Check the file, storage, and local read path.
- The source recovers but YouTube stops receiving video: Input reconnection and output publishing recovery are separate. Check the output connection, encoder messages, stream health, and event state; test the output recovery plan independently.
- Retries continue when you expected the job to stop: Review EOF settings and any retry caps. Disable retry-at-EOF for a finite file intended to end, and set retry limits if indefinite attempts are not desired.
- Viewers see stalls or the ingest reports health issues: Check the chosen bitrate against YouTube’s current table and available upload bandwidth, preserve the recommended headroom, and inspect the event preview and health messages.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Rotate it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration; do not publish the replacement in logs, screenshots, or scripts.
