Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() with fullPage: true to capture a website as one tall image, including a chart below the browser’s visible area. Before capturing, wait for the chart itself to render; page navigation finishing does not guarantee that an embedded chart is ready.
How do I take a full-page screenshot of a website?
Playwright’s full-page option captures the page’s full scrollable area rather than only the current viewport. The official guide describes it as a screenshot “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” See Playwright’s screenshot guide.

Here is a minimal Node.js example. Replace the URL and the chart-ready condition with the target site’s address and a signal that reflects how that site renders its chart.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.locator('.chart').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart-preview.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
This assumes the page has a visible element matching .chart. Use a selector and readiness check appropriate to the application: some charts appear only after data loads or client-side rendering completes. The selector becoming visible may not mean its plotted data has finished drawing, so use the application’s own ready state when available.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity

Save a file or use the screenshot buffer
Providing path saves the image directly. The screenshot API also returns a buffer, which is useful when the next step in your workflow processes or uploads the image rather than saving it to disk. For example:
const image = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });
// Pass image to your image-processing or upload step.
See the Playwright Page screenshot API for the options and return value.

How do I capture a chart in a website screenshot?
If the preview should show the full page and surrounding context, use fullPage: true after the chart is ready. If you need only the chart, capture its element instead:

Element screenshots and full-page screenshots serve different purposes: the former focuses on a selected locator, while the latter includes the full scrollable page. Playwright identifies charts and canvas content as screenshot use cases in its screenshot guidance.

When the chart is drawn on a canvas
A canvas-based chart can be captured visually like other page content, but the screenshot records its appearance, not the data or structure behind it. If a page exposes a chart-specific completion signal, wait for it before capturing. If you need to read the chart’s data or understand page structure, pair the image with accessible descriptions or an accessibility snapshot; a screenshot alone is not a substitute for that information. See Playwright’s screenshot and accessibility guidance.
Choose image format, scale, and repeatability options
Playwright’s screenshot API supports options that affect the output. Choose according to how the preview will be used, rather than treating one setting as best for every chart.

| Need | Capture choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve crisp labels and edges | PNG, the documented default | Output may be larger than a compressed format. |
| Reduce file size | JPEG or WebP, with a quality setting if appropriate | Compression can soften fine chart details; quality settings do not apply to PNG. |
| Compact dimensions | scale: 'css' |
Produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. |
| Retain device-pixel detail | scale: 'device' |
Captures device pixels and can produce a larger image on high-density displays. |
| Make repeat captures steadier | Disable animations and use screenshot styles to hide dynamic or irrelevant elements | You need to decide which page elements should be suppressed. |
| Protect private regions | Mask selected locators | Choose selectors for the content that must not appear. |
The available settings are documented in the screenshot API. For example, an explicit PNG capture at CSS scale is:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'chart-preview.png',
fullPage: true,
type: 'png',
scale: 'css',
animations: 'disabled'
});
For a masked region, pass a locator in mask:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'chart-preview.png',
fullPage: true,
mask: [page.locator('.private-details')]
});
Use a selector that targets only the intended content; an overly broad mask can cover the chart or its labels.

Keep full-page captures manageable
A full-page screenshot can be very tall, especially on long pages. Playwright warns that pages may crash when allocating too much memory for a screenshot. If the complete page is not essential, capture the chart element or a deliberately bounded region instead. The API documentation does not establish a universal safe page height, so test the actual page and output dimensions in your own workflow rather than relying on a fixed limit.
Troubleshoot missing or poor chart previews
- The chart is blank or incomplete: The chart may render after navigation. Wait for a chart-specific ready signal or application state before taking the screenshot.
- The selector wait completes but the plotted data is absent: Visibility alone may only mean the container exists. Wait for the chart’s actual data/render completion condition where the page provides one.
- The screenshot shows only the viewport: Check that the call uses
fullPage: true. For a chart-only artifact, use the locator’sscreenshot()method instead. - The output is too large: Consider
scale: 'css', JPEG or WebP, or an element capture if the full page is unnecessary. Check that compression has not made labels illegible. - The chart changes between captures: Disable animations and use screenshot styles to hide irrelevant dynamic elements. These controls can make captures steadier, but they do not make data that changes at the source identical.
- Private content appears in the image: Mask the relevant locator or hide it with screenshot styling before capture, then inspect the resulting artifact.
- The browser crashes on a very long page: Reduce the captured area or capture the chart element. Excessive screenshot memory allocation can crash a browser page; no universal maximum is specified in the API documentation.
