Use a pinned Playwright browser and a deterministic page, then call page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }). The resulting PNG contains the complete scrollable document rather than only the viewport. Stable OCR fixtures also require fixed fonts, viewport, device scale, locale, data, clocks, animations, and browser/OS versions; save that metadata beside the image and keep OCR text and bounding-box assertions separate from pixel comparisons.
What a full-page OCR fixture is
A fixture is a checked-in screenshot and the expected OCR result that your tests can use repeatedly. A full-page fixture captures the page from the top through the end of its scrollable document. It is not a picture of browser chrome, tabs, the operating-system desktop, or anything outside the web page.

Playwright’s screenshot API can capture the viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. Set fullPage: true to request the last of these. PNG is the safest default for OCR because it is lossless; Playwright also supports JPEG and WebP, and can return an in-memory buffer when an OCR pipeline does not need a file.
The important distinction is between coverage and repeatability. fullPage: true gives you coverage. Repeatability comes from controlling every input that can change pixels or text.

1. Pin the rendering environment
Generate baselines in a known browser and operating-system image, not on whichever desktop happens to run a developer’s command. Browser screenshots can vary with the host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use the same environment for baseline and candidate runs, or record enough information to reproduce a difference.
- Browser: install and pin the Playwright browser revision used by the project.
- Operating system: run in a pinned container or CI image where practical.
- Viewport: fix width and height explicitly. A different width can change line wrapping and therefore OCR coordinates.
- Device scale: choose one scale policy. Use
scale: 'css'when OCR assertions depend on stable CSS-pixel dimensions; use device-pixel scale only when the fixture deliberately tests high-DPI output. - Locale and timezone: set both so dates, number formatting, and language-dependent text do not change.
- Fonts: install and version the exact font packages. A fallback font changes glyph widths, line breaks, and bounding boxes.
- Color and motion settings: fix color scheme and reduced-motion preferences if your application responds to them.
- Data revision: identify the seed or content revision used to render the page.
Record these values in a metadata file next to each image. That turns a mysterious one-pixel or one-line drift into an actionable environment comparison.
2. Make the page deterministic before capture
A screenshot taken immediately after navigation often captures an intermediate state. Wait for application data, web fonts, and layout to settle before creating the fixture.
Use fixed content and stable routes
Point the test at a local route or a test deployment whose data is seeded. Avoid random IDs, rotating advertisements, user-specific recommendations, and remote content that can change between runs. Freeze timestamps, countdowns, and other clocks where your application permits it. If a timestamp is part of the behavior under test, inject a known time rather than accepting the machine’s current time.
Wait for the things OCR reads
Wait for the application data request to finish, then wait for web fonts with document.fonts.ready. A network-idle event can be useful, but it is not a substitute for an application-specific readiness signal: analytics, long polling, or a websocket can keep a page technically busy after the visible content is ready. Prefer a selector that means “fixture content is rendered” when you have one.
Remove motion and caret noise
Disable CSS animations and transitions for the capture. Hide blinking carets and pause carousels, video, and animated counters. Otherwise two captures of identical data can contain different frames. Keep this override in the fixture harness rather than changing production styles.
Account for lazy content and sticky UI
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every lazy image or below-the-fold component has loaded. Trigger the same loading behavior your users receive, scroll through the document when necessary, and wait for images or a page-level “complete” marker. Sticky headers can appear at every stitched segment or cover text while the page is being captured; decide whether the fixture should include that behavior and configure the test page accordingly.

The following Node.js example creates a deterministic PNG fixture. Replace the route and readiness selector with the page in your test application.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
locale: 'en-US',
timezoneId: 'UTC',
colorScheme: 'light',
reducedMotion: 'reduce'
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/ocr-fixture', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-fixture-ready]');
await page.evaluate(() => {
const style = document.createElement('style');
style.textContent = `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation: none !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
}
`;
document.head.appendChild(style);
});
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
await page.screenshot({
path: 'fixtures/page.png',
fullPage: true,
type: 'png',
scale: 'css'
});
await browser.close();
fullPage: true is the switch that changes the capture from the visible viewport to the whole scrollable page. The explicit type: 'png' and scale: 'css' settings make the output policy obvious to reviewers and keep OCR dimensions tied to CSS pixels.

Capture an in-memory buffer when needed
Playwright can return the image instead of writing it directly to disk. This is useful when your OCR worker receives bytes from a queue or when you want to hash the image before storing it.
const png = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true, type: 'png', scale: 'css' });
// Pass png to your OCR worker, and persist the same bytes for debugging when a test fails.
Capture a specific element only when that is the fixture’s contract
A full-page fixture is appropriate when text can appear anywhere in the document. If the contract is a report panel or a single component, capture that element instead and keep the selector stable. Do not substitute an element shot for a full-page test merely because the page is long; you would no longer test content outside that element.

Keep a machine-readable record such as fixtures/page.json next to fixtures/page.png. Include at least:
- the URL or application route;
- viewport width and height;
- browser and Playwright versions;
- the operating-system image;
- locale and timezone;
- font package names and versions;
- color scheme and reduced-motion setting;
- device scale policy and image format;
- the content or data revision used for the run.
Metadata is not part of the OCR image, so it cannot fix a bad baseline by itself. Its purpose is diagnosis: when a candidate differs, you can determine whether rendering inputs changed before reviewing the pixels.
5. Run OCR and preserve two kinds of assertions
Run your chosen OCR engine against the saved image and store the expected text plus bounding-box assertions. Keep the original image, not only normalized text, so a failed test can be inspected.
- Text assertions: verify words, numbers, labels, and reading order that the product must expose.
- Geometry assertions: verify the coordinates and dimensions of important text boxes.
- Image assertions: verify visual layout, colors, borders, and spacing with a reviewed screenshot baseline.
These checks answer different questions. Image similarity can pass while OCR output changes, for example when a small but important label changes. OCR can pass while layout pixels drift, such as a shifted panel or altered color. Keep the assertions separate so a failure identifies the contract that was broken.

6. Add a reviewed visual baseline
Playwright Test can create a reference screenshot and compare subsequent runs with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Review a baseline when it is first generated. When a candidate differs, inspect the image, OCR text, bounding boxes, and metadata together; update the baseline only after deciding that the rendering change is intentional.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('full-page OCR fixture remains intentional', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/ocr-fixture');
await page.waitForSelector('[data-fixture-ready]');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('page.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
scale: 'css'
});
});
The test should use the same context settings, data seed, readiness checks, and font environment as the standalone fixture generator. A baseline made by a different harness is not a reliable comparison.

Playwright or direct Chrome DevTools Protocol?
| Decision point | Playwright | Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) |
|---|---|---|
| API level | High-level browser and test API with navigation, contexts, selectors, waits, screenshots, and assertions. | Lower-level protocol calls; Chromium exposes screenshot capture through Page.captureScreenshot. |
| Browser coverage | Designed for browser automation across its supported browser projects. | Directly controls a Chromium-based session through the protocol. |
| Screenshot control | Convenient options for full-page, element, format, scale, and buffers. | Fine-grained protocol control, but you must assemble more of the navigation, waiting, and fixture logic. |
| Reproducibility support | Browser contexts, emulation settings, test fixtures, and a natural place to record metadata. | Possible, but your existing harness must provide the environment pinning and metadata discipline. |
| Baseline assertions | Playwright Test integrates directly with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). |
No equivalent assertion layer is implied; add comparison and review handling in your harness. |
Use Playwright as the practical default for OCR fixtures. Choose direct CDP when an existing harness already operates at protocol level and you need its lower-level Chromium control. Do not switch solely because CDP sounds more precise: reproducibility still depends on the page, fonts, browser, and host variables you control around the protocol call.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is the first alternative to try when you want a service instead of maintaining a browser fixture harness: it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots, and its lowest paid plan is $5.
Recommended Free Tools
One GET request is enough. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; replace the example URL with your test route. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration. Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, device presets or any viewport, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, and transparent backgrounds are available controls. You can also resize images; block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; provide custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or Authorization; set timezone and geolocation; choose a cache TTL; create signed links for public <img> tags; submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call; query usage; and use the OpenAPI specification.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the request options and response details.
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Why the response is useful for fixture pipelines
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Every response identifies the result with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders, so a pipeline can distinguish a clean, billed image from a failed or cached attempt. - An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, allowing AI agents to collect fixtures without a custom browser integration.
| Plan | Allowance or price |
|---|---|
| Free | 1,000 shots per month, no card |

| Pro | $39 for 60,000 shots |
| Scale | $99 for 250,000 shots |
| Business | $249 for 1,000,000 shots |
Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. For a fixture job, still pin the URL, data, viewport, locale, timezone, and fonts on the page itself; an API removes browser-maintenance work but cannot make nondeterministic application content deterministic.

Troubleshooting full-page fixture failures
The image stops at the viewport bottom
Cause: the capture omitted fullPage: true, or the page’s scrollable area is an inner container rather than the document.
Fix: set fullPage: true and verify which element owns scrolling. If the product intentionally uses an inner scroll region, capture that region as an element fixture and document the contract instead of assuming document scrolling.

Images or cards are missing below the fold
Cause: lazy loading has not been triggered, or the capture ran before remote assets completed.
Fix: scroll through the page or invoke the application’s test-only preload path, wait for the readiness selector and image completion condition, then capture. Keep the same loading strategy in baseline and candidate runs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Text wraps differently on another machine
Cause: a different font package, browser revision, viewport, device scale, locale, or OS image.
Fix: use the pinned environment and compare the metadata files. Install the required fonts rather than relying on fallbacks; set viewport, locale, timezone, and scale explicitly.
OCR changes while the page looks almost identical
Cause: a small label, digit, caret, or animated frame changed even though broad image similarity remained high.
Fix: inspect OCR text and bounding boxes independently, disable animations and carets, freeze time, and retain the original image for review.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A sticky header is repeated or covers content
Cause: the header remains fixed while Playwright stitches the long page, or it overlays text during scrolling.
Fix: decide whether sticky behavior is part of the requirement. Provide a fixture-only style that makes the header static, or assert the repeated/overlaid behavior deliberately; do not silently crop it out.
The page contains a blinking cursor, carousel, or video frame
Cause: time-dependent pixels are still active.
Fix: disable transitions and animations, pause media, hide the caret, and inject fixed clock values or test data where practical.
Best Value
Capture is slow or memory-heavy
Cause: a very tall document, large uncompressed images, or excessive page resources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix: remove irrelevant resources in the test route, block ads or trackers in a controlled fixture environment, capture only the element required by a narrower test, and keep PNG for OCR only where lossless pixels are needed. Do not split a required full-page fixture merely to make a test faster; instead measure the page height and resource cost and optimize the fixture content.
A baseline changed after a browser or OS update
Cause: rendering output legitimately varies with browser, OS, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode.
Fix: compare metadata and rerun in the pinned environment. If the rendering change is intentional, review the new OCR text, boxes, and image before updating the baseline; otherwise restore the previous environment.
Reliability and maintenance checklist
- Use a deterministic route and fixed seed data.
- Pin the browser, Playwright, OS image, fonts, viewport, locale, timezone, color scheme, reduced-motion setting, and scale policy.
- Wait for application data, web fonts, and a meaningful readiness selector.
- Disable animations, transitions, carets, clocks, rotating content, and other time-dependent pixels.
- Ensure lazy content and remote assets are loaded before the screenshot.
- Save the original PNG, OCR text, bounding boxes, and metadata together.
- Review visual baselines and update them only for intentional rendering changes.
- Keep OCR, geometry, and image assertions as separate checks.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use JPEG for an OCR fixture?
Yes. Playwright supports JPEG, but PNG is the safer default when OCR accuracy depends on lossless pixels. Use another format only when the fixture is intentionally testing that encoded output.
What should I do when the page has no reliable ready selector?
Create a test-only readiness marker after the application has loaded its fixed data and completed the layout work. Combine it with a font readiness check rather than relying on a generic delay alone.
Is a full-page screenshot suitable for testing browser UI or a desktop application?
No. The fixture contains the web document’s scrollable page, not browser chrome or the operating-system desktop. Test those surfaces with a tool designed for them.
When is CDP the better choice?
Use direct CDP when an existing harness already operates at protocol level and needs Chromium-specific control. For a new fixture harness, Playwright usually requires less surrounding code for navigation, waits, contexts, and baseline assertions.
The Bottom Line
For dependable OCR fixtures, control the rendering inputs first and use fullPage: true with a lossless PNG. Preserve metadata, OCR text, geometry, and the original image so every baseline change can be explained rather than guessed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
