To generate a website screenshot with a REST API, send the target page URL and capture settings to a screenshot service’s HTTP endpoint, authenticate the request, then handle the response exactly as that provider documents. Some APIs return image bytes directly; others return JSON containing a result URL. Those contracts are not interchangeable.
How a screenshot API request works
A hosted screenshot service opens a URL in a browser and returns a rendered image or document. A typical integration has four parts: the provider’s endpoint and HTTP method, authentication, the target URL and options, and code that checks and saves the response. Start with the provider’s current quickstart and parameter reference; record the exact method, field names, successful response type, error format, and any result-file expiry rules.

The examples below use ScreenshotEngine’s documented API as a provider-specific example. Do not copy its endpoint, field names, or response handling into another service without checking that service’s documentation.
Make a first request with ScreenshotEngine
ScreenshotEngine documents a POST request to https://api.screenshotengine.com/v1/screenshot, authenticated with a bearer key. The example requests a PNG full-page capture of a public URL. Keep the key on a server, stored in a secret manager or protected environment variable—not in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or logs.

}
const contentType = res.headers.get("content-type") || "";
if (!contentType.startsWith("image/")) {
throw new Error(`Expected image bytes, received ${contentType}`);
}
const imageBytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
const { writeFile } = await import("node:fs/promises");
await writeFile("screenshot.png", imageBytes);
These examples assume the documented ScreenshotEngine contract: successful requests return raw file bytes and errors return JSON. Check the HTTP status before writing a file, and inspect Content-Type. A successful image response is not JSON; an error response should not be saved under an image filename. See the quickstart and parameter reference for the service’s current details.
Choose the capture settings
Start with the smallest set of options that produces the view you need. Supported names and behavior vary by provider, and ScreenshotEngine notes that its parameter names are case-sensitive; GET and POST do not use identical naming conventions for every option.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Target URL: use a complete URL, including its scheme, such as
https://example.com. - Viewport: set the desired width and height for a viewport capture. A viewport image shows the visible browser area, not necessarily the whole document.
- Full page: ScreenshotEngine documents full-page capture using
height: "full"in its parameter reference. Its quickstart example usesfullPage: true; follow the method-specific syntax in the reference rather than mixing forms. - Format: ScreenshotEngine documents JPEG as its image default and PNG or WebP as alternatives. Other providers may have different defaults.
- Wait behavior: use a delay or selector-based wait only when client-side rendering, late-loading content, or animation means the page is not ready immediately. Excessive waits add latency.
- Page selection and output: ScreenshotEngine documents selector capture, viewport presets, PDF paper and orientation options, and scrolling-video output. Confirm availability and exact syntax in its reference before using them.
A device preset sets viewport dimensions; it does not necessarily emulate a physical phone. ScreenshotEngine says its presets do not emulate browser, touch input, user agent, or pixel density. If those properties matter, verify the provider’s documented emulation controls.
GET or POST?
Use the HTTP method the provider supports. ScreenshotEngine documents both GET and POST, with POST accepting JSON. GET can be convenient for a simple request, but some APIs put credentials in a query string. Query parameters can be exposed in copied URLs, server logs, or monitoring systems. When supported, POST with a JSON body and bearer authentication avoids putting the key in the URL and is easier to extend with multiple options. ScreenshotEngine recommends header authentication for POST; consult its authentication guidance.

Handle the response according to the provider
Never assume that an HTTP screenshot endpoint returns JSON—or that it returns an image directly. ScreenshotEngine documents raw file bytes on success and JSON on error. Other services document different patterns: ScreenshotAPI.org may provide a CDN URL or redirect, while WebsiteScreenshotAPI documents a JSON object with a result URL, metadata, and an expiry field. RenderScreenshot documents raw binary output. Parse only the response shape the chosen provider specifies.
- Check the HTTP status before consuming the body as an image.
- For a documented binary response, inspect
Content-Typeand save the bytes with an extension matching the requested format. - For a documented JSON response, parse the JSON, read the documented result field, and account for any expiry or retention limit before relying on that URL.
- On errors, preserve the status and provider error details for server-side diagnostics, but avoid logging API keys or sensitive target-page credentials.
Pages that require a login or interaction
The screenshot service’s API key authenticates your request to that service; it does not log the screenshot browser into the target website. A public URL is the simplest starting point. For a private page, check whether the provider explicitly supports cookies, target-site authorization headers, basic authentication, or login scripts. ScreenshotEngine’s documented endpoint is for public URLs and does not expose custom cookies, target Authorization headers, or login scripts.

Screenshot API’s documentation shows cookie, header, and basic-auth controls. Sending those values gives the service sensitive access to the target site, so use them only after reviewing the provider’s data-handling terms and your organization’s security requirements. Keep target-site credentials distinct from the screenshot service API key. If the task depends on an already-authenticated browser profile or interactive steps, local browser automation may be a better fit than a simple screenshot endpoint.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
cURL example (replace the URL as needed); see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

- The saved file is unreadable: the response may be a JSON error saved with an image extension. Check the status and
Content-Typebefore writing bytes. - The client reports a JSON parsing error: the provider may return raw image or PDF bytes on success. For ScreenshotEngine, save successful response bytes instead of parsing them as JSON.
- Authentication fails: confirm the provider’s required header or key parameter, that the key is active, and that it is being sent to the correct endpoint. Replace and revoke a key if it was exposed; ScreenshotEngine advises secure storage.
- The captured page is a login, error, or redirect page: an HTTP 200 from the screenshot service only indicates a successful capture request, not that the intended target content appeared. Check the final page status or page information if the provider exposes it, and confirm whether the target requires authentication.
- The screenshot cuts off content: a viewport capture is not necessarily full-page. Enable the provider’s documented full-page option and check its exact method-specific parameter name.
- Content is missing or still loading: wait for a relevant selector or add a modest delay only if the site needs more render time. Confirm that the page is not blocked or dependent on an unavailable interaction.
- A setting is ignored: check spelling, case, supported values, and whether the option uses different names in GET and POST requests. Do not combine fields from different providers’ examples.
- A request is slow: avoid unnecessary full-page captures and long fixed delays; capture only the required selector or use a readiness condition when supported. Review provider quotas and timeouts for production workloads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I call a screenshot REST API directly from browser JavaScript?
Avoid exposing a reusable API key in a public frontend bundle. Send the request through a server-side route that reads the key from protected configuration.
Does a successful screenshot request mean the intended page loaded?
No. A login screen, error page, or redirect destination can still be rendered successfully. Validate the captured destination or page status when the service makes it available.
Should I use a hosted screenshot API or browser automation?
Use a screenshot endpoint for straightforward URL-to-image requests. If capture requires an existing logged-in browser profile or a sequence of interactive steps that the API does not support, browser automation may fit better.
