For a page behind your application’s login, the clearest general approach is to fetch or build its authorized HTML on your own server, then send that HTML to DocRaptor as document_content. DocRaptor also accepts a document_url, but do not assume it can reuse a visitor’s browser cookie or login session. Keep the DocRaptor API key on your server.
Choose how DocRaptor will receive the private page
DocRaptor’s API accepts either HTML content or a URL as the document source. Those inputs are not interchangeable from an access-control perspective: a URL that works in a logged-in browser is not necessarily reachable by DocRaptor, which makes its own request to retrieve the page.

Recommended workflow: send authorized HTML from your server
- Authenticate and authorize in your application. Verify the user’s access before retrieving private content.
- Fetch or render the HTML in a trusted server context. Use the application’s existing authorization, then prepare the content for conversion.
- Send a server-side DocRaptor request. Set the document source to
document_content, the output type topdf, and authenticate using the API key as described in DocRaptor’s API documentation. - Return the generated PDF through your application’s access-controlled response. Treat the output as sensitive if the source page is private.
Keep the API key in server-side configuration, such as a protected environment variable or secrets store. Do not place a production key in browser JavaScript: DocRaptor warns that its browser JavaScript library exposes the key in page source and recommends a server-side agent or its referrer-based API for public locations. The exact request-building code depends on the server language and the structure of your content. The essential document fields are document_content and type: "pdf"; follow the current API reference for the required authentication header or parameter rather than copying a key into client code.

When a private URL might work
Use document_url only if DocRaptor can retrieve the page under the authentication arrangement you intend to use. The API reference lists prince_options[http_user] and prince_options[http_password], while DocRaptor’s security white paper discusses HTTP Basic Auth for protected assets. The reviewed references do not unambiguously establish whether those options authenticate the primary document_url request itself.
- Do not infer that a browser’s existing cookie is sent to DocRaptor.
- Before adopting URL-based authentication for private content, ask DocRaptor to confirm the behavior or test it with a controlled, non-sensitive page.
- Check that the URL is reachable from DocRaptor’s rendering environment; access available only inside your network may prevent retrieval.
Referrer-based conversion for a domain you control
DocRaptor documents a flow in which you configure domains in your account, then link to https://api.docraptor.com/docs/from_site from a page whose HTTP referrer contains an authorized domain. This avoids putting an API key in that link flow. It is a site-owner integration, not documented as a general method for passing a logged-in visitor’s session cookie to the converter. Confirm that the page’s own access controls and the referrer flow fit your use case.

Make sure assets and dynamic content render
CSS, fonts, images, and scripts
The HTML may load while its linked assets fail: stylesheets, fonts, images, and scripts can trigger separate requests and may have their own authentication requirements. DocRaptor’s security white paper describes approaches including HTTPS, HTTP Basic Auth for assets, short-lived or limited-download asset URLs, IP allowlisting, and a customer-controlled secured proxy. Choose an approach that matches your security requirements and confirm that every required asset is accessible to the renderer.

DocRaptor states, “By default, JavaScript is disabled on DocRaptor.” If your page needs JavaScript for charts or other content, consult its JavaScript tutorial about enabling javascript and the separate Prince JavaScript option. Test the actual page’s asynchronous behavior; enabling JavaScript alone does not establish that all dynamic content will finish before capture.

DocRaptor documents a test mode that watermarks generated PDFs, and its API reference describes test-mode limits for hosted documents. Use non-sensitive content while checking layout and resource access, and consult the current reference for the applicable limits.

Protect the document after conversion
A private source page remains sensitive when converted to a PDF. Restrict who can request and download the output, avoid publicly exposed or long-lived document links unless intended, and review DocRaptor’s current security terms alongside your own retention and data-handling requirements. Do not treat successful conversion as proof that the output is protected.
