Set FFmpeg’s video bitrate from your connection’s sustained upload speed—not its advertised download speed or plan name. For YouTube H.264 at 30 fps, Google’s current guidance lists 3 Mbps at 360p, 5 Mbps at 480p, 8 Mbps at 720p, and 10 Mbps at 1080p. Leave at least 20% upload headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate, including audio and transport overhead. On a tight connection, start at 360p30 or 480p30 and test during the hours your church normally streams.
These are YouTube live-ingestion recommendations, not guarantees for a particular Indian broadband connection. A monthly data cap is a separate constraint: a stream can fit the available upload speed yet use more data than the plan allows.

Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain
Run a realistic upload-speed test on the same wired or Wi-Fi connection and at roughly the same time of day as the church service. Upload capacity—not download speed—is what carries the stream to YouTube. A brief peak result is not enough: other household or church devices and fluctuations during the service can reduce the bandwidth available to FFmpeg.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYouTube recommends allowing 20% room in available upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s total bitrate. Treat the video figures below as video-only targets; audio and network overhead also consume capacity. The table is for YouTube H.264 at 30 fps, and the page was checked in 2026; YouTube may change its guidance.

| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps | Start here when upload capacity is limited; check that lyrics, faces, and other important details remain readable. |
| 480p30 | 5 Mbps | A step up when sustained upload leaves room for video, audio, overhead, and headroom. |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Use only when the connection reliably supports the full stream with headroom. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Requires substantially more upload capacity; do not select it based on download speed alone. |
For example, 3 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is about 3.13 Mbps before transport overhead. Applying YouTube’s 20% room guidance gives a planning minimum of roughly 3.76 Mbps sustained upload for that stream; allow more if the connection is shared or variable. This is arithmetic based on the listed targets, not a guarantee of service quality.
Resolution and bitrate work together. Lower bitrate is easier to sustain, but may make distant faces, lyrics, or signs harder to see. A mostly static pulpit scene may tolerate a lower bitrate better than frequent camera movement, but test the actual service setup and view the result on a phone or other typical viewer screen.

Set up FFmpeg for YouTube Live
The following example reads a video file in real time and sends a 360p30-style bitrate target to an RTMPS ingest address. It assumes the input is a file, uses H.264 through libx264, and encodes AAC audio. The 3 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s 360p30 recommendation; scale the output to the intended dimensions if the source file is larger.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
- Replace the input and destination. Change
input.mp4to your file and replace the RTMPS address and placeholder key with the ingest URL and stream key provided by YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or publish it in a script or screenshot. - Match the output dimensions. For a 360p output, add a scale filter appropriate to the source, such as
-vf "scale=-2:360". For 480p or 720p, use the intended height instead. The-2width preserves an even dimension while maintaining the source aspect ratio. - Choose the bitrate and buffer together. The example uses
-b:v 3000k,-maxrate 3000k, and-bufsize 6000k. For the YouTube 480p30 target, substitute-b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k; for 720p30, use-b:v 8000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 16000k. Set dimensions to match. These are illustrative encoder settings, not measured results or a promise that the connection can sustain them. - Keep the live keyframe interval at two seconds. At 30 fps,
-g 60and-keyint_min 60request 60-frame intervals;-sc_threshold 0prevents scene cuts from introducing a different keyframe cadence. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies a 2-second keyframe interval. - Check encoder support. Rate-control behavior depends on the chosen encoder; these
-maxrateand-bufsizesettings are for thislibx264example and do not guarantee identical behavior with other encoders. Check the local build withffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, or substitute the encoder name you actually use. Confirm that the build supports the selected encoder and RTMPS protocol. - Use
-reonly for file playback. It reads a file at its natural playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. FFmpeg cautions against imposing a low read rate on a real capture device or live input, where it can cause packet loss.
YouTube’s live guidance calls for CBR, H.264, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. The example uses AAC. FFmpeg documents -b:v for video bitrate and -b:a for audio bitrate; consult the documentation for the exact behavior of your installed encoder and build: FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg all-options documentation.

Test before the service and monitor the stream
- Test at service time. Measure sustained upload on the actual streaming connection when the church typically broadcasts. Repeat the test or observe performance long enough to spot variation; do not plan around a single best-case result.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check that YouTube receives the stream, audio is clear and in sync, and important details remain readable on a viewer’s device. Include representative movement, not just a static opening frame.
- Watch stream health during the broadcast. If YouTube reports instability, dropped frames, or buffering, reduce the video bitrate or resolution and check whether other devices are using the connection. A lower target with headroom is generally more useful than a higher target the connection cannot sustain.
- Recheck after changes. A different encoder, source resolution, frame rate, audio setting, or network arrangement changes the conditions. Rehearse the actual configuration rather than assuming an earlier test still applies.
YouTube’s published live settings and streaming tips are available at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips. The figures are platform recommendations, not measurements of an Indian ISP or of your church’s line.
Estimate monthly data separately from upload speed
A data cap does not tell you the upload speed, and an upload-speed test does not tell you how much monthly data the plan includes. At a sustained 1 Mbps, 24 hours of streaming uses about 10.8 decimal GB before overhead. Estimate usage by multiplying the stream’s total bitrate in Mbps by the number of hours streamed, then by roughly 10.8 GB per Mbps per 24 hours. This is an approximation; actual use varies with bitrate and overhead.

Troubleshoot common bitrate problems
- Stream drops or YouTube reports unstable upload: the available upload may be below the stream’s full bitrate plus headroom, or may be fluctuating. Lower the video bitrate or resolution, pause other uploads, and retest during the service window.
- Download test looks fast but the stream struggles: download speed does not establish upload capacity. Test upload on the streaming connection.
- Audio works but the picture buffers: check video bitrate and upload stability first; the video target is usually the larger share of the stream. Lower the video target and rehearse again.
- Picture is stable but lyrics or faces are hard to read: test a higher resolution only if upload capacity supports its recommended bitrate with headroom. Also check the source and scaling dimensions.
- FFmpeg fails to open the output or connect: verify the RTMPS ingest address, stream key, network access, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol.
- Encoder option is rejected or rate control behaves unexpectedly: confirm the encoder name and its supported options with local FFmpeg help. The sample’s constrained-rate settings are specific to
libx264. - Capture input loses packets after adding
-re: remove-rewhen the source is a live capture device or other live input. It is intended here for reading a file at real-time speed. - Connection is adequate but the monthly bill or cap is a concern: estimate data use from the total bitrate and streaming hours, then confirm the broadband plan’s current terms with the provider.
