If the standard uninstall fails, use AVG’s official Uninstall Tool, which removes the software in Safe Mode. Then check Windows Security to confirm which antivirus provider is active.
Uninstall AVG through Windows Settings
- Save your work, then open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find AVG AntiVirus or AVG Internet Security. The exact list label can vary by Windows version. Microsoft documents this Settings route for Windows 10 and 11.
- Open the menu beside AVG and select Uninstall. Confirm in the AVG Setup window and follow its prompts. If User Account Control asks for permission, approve only if you initiated the removal and the publisher shown is AVG. AVG warns that removing the app leaves the device without AVG’s malware protection until another provider is active. AVG’s consumer uninstall instructions describe this flow.
- Restart Windows when AVG prompts you. The restart may be needed to complete removal.
You can also try Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right-click AVG, and choose Uninstall. Microsoft lists Control Panel as an alternative removal route, and AVG documents it for its consumer software. Microsoft’s app-removal guidance.

If AVG will not uninstall
Run AVG’s Uninstall Tool
Use AVG’s official tool if the regular uninstall fails or reports that setup is already running. Download and run avg_av_clear.exe as administrator. Accept the restart into Safe Mode, select Remove under Remove only, confirm the removal, wait for cleanup, and restart Windows when it finishes. Choose Remove only for an uninstall rather than the remove-and-reinstall option. AVG’s Uninstall Tool instructions describe these steps.

Restart the PC and try removal from Settings again. For Windows 10 problems involving incomplete uninstall data or a corrupted program entry, Microsoft documents the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter and other recovery steps on its program installation and removal troubleshooting page. Follow its current instructions instead of deleting AVG folders or editing the registry manually.

For managed business devices
If AVG is installed on an organization-managed computer, do not treat it like a personal consumer installation. AVG directs administrators to remove business software through the management console; removing the endpoint software while its management agent remains can cause it to be installed again. Follow your organization’s process or contact its administrator. AVG’s business removal guidance.
Check protection after removal
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers and check the antivirus provider shown there. Microsoft says Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns back on automatically after another antivirus app is uninstalled, but verify the status—particularly if the device is managed or Windows reports a protection problem. Uninstalling AVG does not cancel a subscription
If you pay for AVG Internet Security, removing the app does not cancel the subscription or stop billing. Handle cancellation separately through AVG’s subscription cancellation process, as described in AVG’s uninstall guidance.

Windows 10 support status
The uninstall steps still apply to Windows 10, but Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Removing AVG does not change that support status. See Microsoft’s support information for details.
