To keep headings or identifying columns visible while you scroll in Google Sheets, freeze them from View > Freeze on a computer. In the mobile app, select a row or column and choose Freeze. You can freeze a custom number, including four columns, and undo the setting later.
What freezing does
Freezing pins selected rows or columns in place so they remain visible as you scroll through the rest of a sheet. It is useful when a table’s labels are no longer on screen—for example, when you need to see column headings while moving down a long list. Freezing is different from hiding or grouping rows and columns. Google’s Sheets help page describes the feature and its desktop controls.

Freeze rows or columns on a computer
- Open the spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Select the row or column that marks where the frozen area should end.
- Choose View > Freeze.
- Choose how many rows or columns to freeze.
For a custom boundary—such as keeping four columns visible—select the appropriate boundary and choose the matching freeze option in the menu. Some interfaces may show an option such as “Up to current column”; menu wording can vary, so use the option that corresponds to the number of rows or columns you want to keep in view. The official help confirms that you select how many to freeze but does not enumerate every menu label.
To remove a frozen area on a computer, choose View > Freeze > No rows or No columns, as appropriate. Google’s Sheets cheat sheet also points to View > Freeze for keeping rows or columns in place while scrolling.

Freeze or unfreeze in the mobile app

| iPhone or iPad | Tap the row number or column letter, tap the right arrow in the menu, then tap Freeze. | Use the same menu and tap Unfreeze. |

Repeat frozen headings when printing
If you want frozen headings to appear on each printed page, first freeze the relevant rows or columns in the sheet. Then on a computer choose File > Print > Headers & footers and select Repeat frozen rows or Repeat frozen columns. See Google’s print settings instructions.
