What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Laser power sets the rate at which energy is delivered; spot size and focus determine how concentrated it is; and, on a pulsed laser, pulse duration shapes how that energy arrives. Together with movement speed, wavelength, material and thickness, these parameters influence whether a job cuts through, engraves cleanly or produces unwanted heat damage. There is no universally reliable setting: choose values for the specific machine and material, then follow its manufacturer’s guidance.
How power, speed and exposure work together
Power is the laser’s output rate—not a promise of a particular cut depth. The effect at a point on the work also depends on how long the beam stays there and how the material absorbs and responds to it. At a fixed power, slower travel or longer dwell generally increases exposure. That can darken an engraving or deepen a cut, but can also increase charring; the result varies by substrate and machine. Trotec explains power, speed and other laser parameters, while Snapmaker describes how speed and dwell affect processing.

Power and speed therefore need to be considered together. Raising power may increase the processing effect, but faster motion can reduce the time spent on each point. A power figure by itself cannot tell you whether a particular material will cut through or what an engraving will look like.

How spot size and focus affect the result
The focused spot is the area where the beam is concentrated on the work. A smaller spot concentrates energy into a smaller area and can support finer detail, but it does not automatically make a cut better: penetration also depends on power, exposure, material and focus position. The actual spot depends on the machine’s beam and optics. Snapmaker, for example, cites a 0.20 mm focused spot for its 1.6 W module; that is a model-specific example, not a general laser specification. Snapmaker’s parameter guidance and xTool’s material processing guide discuss spot size and focus.

Focus needs to match the job. If the surface is uneven or the focus is incorrect, the beam spreads over a larger area and results can lose precision. A flat work surface helps maintain consistent focus. For thicker cuts, a manufacturer may specify a focus position within or below the material surface; use the instructions for your particular system rather than assuming one focus position suits every cut.
What pulse duration does—and how it differs from frequency
Pulse duration is the length of time a laser pulse lasts. Pulse frequency is how many pulses occur per second. They are distinct controls, and pulsed-laser settings cannot be interpreted as if every machine delivered energy in the same way. In a pulsed system, pulse energy and duration together determine peak power; estimating peak power also requires the pulse shape, as OSHA’s laser safety guidance explains.

When pulse energy is held constant, a shorter pulse can mean higher peak power, but that condition should not be assumed unless the machine specification supports it. Frequency, pulse energy, scan speed and pulse overlap also affect the result. TRUMPF describes using short pulses and a small spot to limit local heat input in metal engraving, and notes that pulse frequency and duration can be adjusted for the material and desired quality. Those concepts are useful, but settings do not transfer automatically between laser architectures or materials. TRUMPF’s laser engraving overview discusses these process factors.

Why cutting and engraving call for different trade-offs
Cutting needs enough energy and exposure to penetrate the material. Engraving usually involves balancing depth with contrast, detail and edge quality. A setting that makes a cut deeper may also char the edges; one that produces a dark engraving may sacrifice fine detail or create excess heat. Trotec cautions that cutting and engraving speeds are not directly comparable in its CO2 parameter guidance, so treat each process as its own setup rather than carrying over a speed value uncritically. Trotec’s parameter guide provides its own application-specific examples, not universal recipes.

- Laser type and wavelength: CO2, diode or semiconductor, and pulsed sources interact differently with materials. Material absorption varies by wavelength; a setting for one laser type may not work on another. See xTool’s material processing guide.
- Material and thickness: Absorption, heat response and the energy needed for penetration differ. Use manufacturer guidance for the particular material and machine, and verify that the material is suitable to process.
- Power and motion: Consider output alongside travel speed or dwell, since these together affect exposure.
- Spot and focus: Account for the machine’s optics, focal length, surface flatness and the focus position recommended for the task.
- Pulsed-source controls: Consider pulse energy, duration and frequency as a coupled set, along with scan speed and overlap.
- Desired outcome: Decide whether the priority is penetration, fine detail, contrast, edge quality or limiting heat spread.
Start with the machine maker’s material library or documented settings for the exact model and material. Change parameters in a controlled way, keeping track of the material, focus, speed and power so you can tell which change affected the result. Manufacturer examples are tied to their stated machines and workflows; they should not be treated as universal starting values. Snapmaker’s work-parameter guide and its cutting and engraving guidance emphasize material choice and setup.

Safety is part of setting up the job
Laser settings do not make an unsafe material or setup safe. A laser beam can injure the eye; the FDA explains that the eye can focus laser light onto a very small, intense spot on the retina. Follow the machine’s safety instructions, use its enclosure and interlocks as directed, and control access to the beam path. OSHA recommends enclosing the beam path, including the interaction area, where possible. Goggles alone should not be treated as a substitute for appropriate engineering controls. FDA laser safety FAQs and OSHA’s laser safety guidance explain the hazards and controls.

Check material suitability and ventilation requirements against the machine and material guidance. Some materials can ignite or release hazardous fumes. For example, xTool warns that low-speed, high-power processing of flammable materials can cause ignition and gives a PVC/vinyl warning for its F1; that product-specific warning should not be generalized into a claim about every machine’s capabilities. xTool’s F1 safety instructions provide the model-specific cautions.
