Removing unused Windows features can reclaim space, but there is no standard 65 GB saving: the amount depends on what is installed and how the PC is configured. Start by checking Windows’ own cleanup recommendations, then remove only optional features you recognize and do not use. Treat disabling hibernation as a separate choice because it removes a power feature, not just clutter.
Can disabling Windows features really free up 65 GB?
It can on a particular PC if that system has unusually large removable content, but Microsoft’s documentation does not establish 65 GB as a typical or guaranteed saving from removing optional features. Windows update storage needs also vary with installed content and the update path. Microsoft’s general guidance says feature updates typically need 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, while quality updates typically need 2 GB–3 GB or more; these are not fixed requirements for every device. Microsoft’s update guidance also notes that language content can account for about 175 MB to more than 300 MB per language in this context.

Measure free space before and after each change rather than assuming a feature’s size equals the space Windows will recover. If you are trying to make room for an update, keep enough headroom for the update itself and avoid removing something you may need to reinstall later.

Cleanup recommendations and Storage Sense are safer first steps than removing system features. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage, then review Cleanup recommendations. Windows can show estimated savings for categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Select items deliberately; the estimate is for the categories selected, not a promise that every listed byte will become free space.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Check its settings before enabling automatic cleanup so you understand which files may be removed and when. For other large files, consider moving personal files to an external drive. OneDrive Files On-Demand can keep smaller placeholders on the PC while the full files remain in OneDrive, but opening those files requires an internet connection when they are not stored locally. Microsoft outlines these options in its Windows storage-space guidance.
Use particular care with Previous Windows installation(s) or Windows.old if it appears in cleanup recommendations: deleting it removes the ability to return to the previous Windows version.

Review and remove optional features you do not use
Optional features are Windows components that may be installed for specific capabilities. Some users need them; “optional” does not mean universally unnecessary. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 path is Settings > System > Optional features. Under Installed features, select a feature and choose Remove. Some supported Windows versions put the page under Settings > Apps, so the exact route can vary by version and update.
- Open the Optional features page in Settings and inspect the installed list.
- Look up any unfamiliar feature before removing it, and keep anything you know you rely on.
- Select only a feature you have decided you do not need, then choose Remove.
- Check available storage again after Windows finishes. Repeat only for other features you have identified as unused.
Windows can add Features on Demand again later, but installation uses Windows Update and the device must be online. For administrators or advanced users, Microsoft documents PowerShell commands such as Get-WindowsOptionalFeature to inspect feature state and Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature to disable a specific feature. Avoid bulk removal commands: they can disable capabilities you depend on. Microsoft’s instructions and version qualifications are on its Windows feature-management page.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Remove language resources only if you no longer need them
Language content can add to storage needs, particularly around feature updates. If you have installed display languages or language resources you no longer use, review them in Settings and remove only the ones you can do without. The update-related estimate of about 175 MB to more than 300 MB per language comes from Microsoft’s general guidance, not a guaranteed saving for every language pack or PC. Keep any language you use for Windows display, typing, speech, or other installed capabilities.

Hibernation uses a system file whose size depends on the PC’s memory and configuration. Turning hibernation off removes that file, which may save meaningful space on some computers, but also removes the ability to use hibernation. Do not treat it as a routine cleanup step if you rely on that power option.

To enable hibernation again, use powercfg /hibernate on. Microsoft also documents hiberfile size and type options, including a reduced type, but these are configuration choices rather than guaranteed space targets. Check the actual file and available storage on your own system; do not change paging-file settings as a casual way to clear space. See Microsoft’s hiberfile guidance and powercfg command reference.
Quick Recap
Choose the route that matches what is taking up space
| Route | What it targets | Main trade-off | Restoring or accessing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations | Temporary files, selected large or unused files, cloud-synced items, and unused apps; Windows estimates savings for selected categories. | Deleting Windows.old removes the option to roll back to the previous Windows version; other deletion effects depend on the selected category. | Review categories before cleanup. Personal files may need to be restored from a backup or another location if deleted. |
| Optional-feature removal | Installed Windows feature payloads you have identified as unnecessary. | The removed capability will not be available until restored. | Features on Demand can be added later through Windows Update; the device must be online. |
| Remove unused language resources | Language content no longer needed on the PC. | You lose the associated language capability until it is added again. | Windows language resources can be reinstalled; update-related per-language space varies. |
| Turn off hibernation | The hibernation file, whose size differs by PC. | Hibernation is unavailable while disabled. | Re-enable it with powercfg /hibernate on. |
| Move personal files to external storage | Large photos, videos, archives, and other personal files. | The files are not available from the system drive when the external drive is disconnected. | Reconnect the drive to access the files. OneDrive Files On-Demand is another option, with online access dependent on connectivity. |
Verify the result and avoid risky cleanup
- Record the system drive’s free space before making a change, then check it again after Windows completes the cleanup or removal.
- Use one change at a time when practical so you can identify what actually freed space and notice if a capability is missing.
- Do not remove an unfamiliar component simply because its name sounds optional; confirm what it does and whether you use it.
- Keep personal files backed up before deleting or moving them.
- If the goal is a Windows update, use Microsoft’s variable storage figures as general guidance, not as a device-specific guarantee.
