camelCase vs. snake_case: How to Review a Naming Inconsistency

camelCase and snake_case are language- and project-dependent. Learn the conventions and a practical review checklist for naming mismatches.

camelCase and snake_case are two ways to mark word boundaries in identifiers, but neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the language, the kind of identifier, and the repository’s established rules. In review, treat an inconsistent name as a potential readability and maintenance problem—not as a runtime bug by itself—and check compatibility before asking for a rename.

What camelCase and snake_case look like

snake_case uses lowercase words separated by underscores: customer_record or load_customer. In camelCase, words are joined and internal words begin with capitals: customerRecord or loadCustomer. The first word is lowercase in lower camel case; in UpperCamelCase, also called CapWords, the first word is capitalized too, as in CustomerRecord.

These spellings make word boundaries visible in different ways. They do not, on their own, say what an identifier does or prove that the code behaves correctly.

Which convention applies?

Look at both the language and the identifier’s role. A style guide may prescribe different forms for classes, functions, variables, methods, and constants. The examples below come from PEP 8 for Python and Google’s JavaScript Style Guide; they are documented choices in those guides, not rules shared by every language or project.

Context Guide’s convention Example
Python class CapWords CustomerRecord
Python function or variable Lowercase, with underscores between words as needed load_customer, customer_record
JavaScript class and related type in Google’s guide UpperCamelCase CustomerRecord
JavaScript method, parameter, or local variable in Google’s guide lowerCamelCase loadCustomer, customerRecord
Constants in PEP 8 and Google’s JavaScript guide Uppercase words separated by underscores (CONSTANT_CASE) MAX_RETRIES

PEP 8 calls the Python function-and-variable form “lower_case_with_underscores” and distinguishes it from “mixedCase.” It recommends CapWords for class names. Google’s JavaScript guide separately defines lowerCamelCase and UpperCamelCase and assigns them to different kinds of identifiers. See PEP 8 and the Google JavaScript Style Guide for their full rules.

Let the repository settle local differences

After identifying the language’s guidance, check the project’s own style guide and nearby code. A repository may deliberately use a convention that differs from a general guide. PEP 8 explicitly gives project-specific guidance precedence when it conflicts and says consistency within a project matters more than consistency with PEP 8. It also cautions against breaking backward compatibility just to comply with the guide.

How to assess a naming mismatch in code review

Use the review to determine whether the name breaks a relevant project rule, obscures intent, or risks compatibility. A difference in capitalization alone is not evidence of a behavioral defect: the cited style guidance supports consistency and readability, not a causal claim that camelCase or snake_case creates bugs.

  1. Identify the language and identifier role. Establish whether the name is a class, function, method, parameter, local variable, constant, or public symbol. Apply the rule for that category, not a blanket rule for every identifier.
  2. Check the local convention. Consult the repository guide and nearby code. If the project has a consistent, intentional pattern, evaluate the change against that pattern rather than imposing a different language-wide preference.
  3. Evaluate clarity, not just casing. Ask whether a reader can tell what the entity does, including when encountering the name outside its immediate line or function. A short local variable may be clear in a small scope, while a public name often needs more context. Google’s C++ guide explains that naming patterns can signal whether an entity is a type, variable, function, or constant, and recommends names understandable to a new reader.
  4. Review abbreviations and acronyms. Ambiguous or unfamiliar abbreviations can make a name harder to interpret. Google’s JavaScript guide recommends descriptive names and provides a deterministic camel-case process: split words at spaces and punctuation, lowercase them, capitalize all words for UpperCamelCase or all but the first for lowerCamelCase, then join them. For example, it renders “XML HTTP request” as xmlHttpRequest and “new customer ID” as newCustomerId. Acronyms can reasonably be treated in more than one way, so follow one predictable project rule.
  5. Check scope and callers before requesting a rename. A private local name is usually easier to change than a public interface consumed elsewhere. Search for compatibility expectations and external callers before proposing a change to a public identifier; a style cleanup should not silently break users.

How to phrase the review comment

Make the comment specific: name the applicable repository rule, explain the practical concern, and propose a consistent alternative. For example: “This module uses snake_case for Python functions; could we rename this to load_customer for consistency? Since it is exported, please also check whether callers depend on the current name.” If the name is clear and established, explain why a change is needed rather than treating a different case style as inherently wrong.

That distinction matters: the available style guides explain naming conventions and their readability rationale, but do not establish that one casing style is more readable or less error-prone in a controlled comparison, or that casing alone causes defects to survive review.
