If an app update won’t install because your phone or tablet says storage is full, first check whether you’re updating an app or the device’s operating system. App updates use Google Play or Apple’s App Store; Android, iOS and iPadOS system updates follow a different process. Start by checking what is using space, then remove or move items you can safely replace and try the update again.
First identify which update is failing
An app update updates one app through Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone and iPad. A system update updates Android, iOS or iPadOS itself. The storage checks below apply to both, but the next steps differ: Apple has a separate process for an iOS or iPadOS system update, while App Store app updates have their own troubleshooting steps.

Check available storage before deleting anything
Android
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories to see what is taking up space. Menu names and categories can vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google Play Help says a device may be low on storage if it has less than 1 GB available. This is Google’s troubleshooting indicator, not a guaranteed minimum for every update or a promise that freeing 1 GB will resolve the problem. Free space with the lowest-risk options first
Prioritize content you can replace, and confirm important photos, videos and files are backed up before deleting local copies. These actions differ in how much data they remove:
| Action | What it can free | What happens to your data |
|---|---|---|
| Delete downloaded files, videos or attachments you no longer need | The space occupied by the selected items | The items are removed from the device. They can be fetched again only if they remain available from their original source or backup. |
| Move large photos, videos or files to a computer, then remove the local copies | The space used by the copies on the device | The computer has a copy, but make sure it opens and is backed up before deleting the originals from the device. |
| Archive an app on Android, if available | Space used by the app itself | Google says archived apps retain personal data. Availability and steps can depend on the Android version. |
| Offload an app on iPhone or iPad | Space used by the app itself | Apple says offloading retains the app’s documents and data. Reinstall the app to use it again. |
| Clear an Android app’s cache | Temporary data stored by that app | Cache is temporary data; the app’s stored data is not the same thing. |
| Clear an Android app’s storage/data, or delete an app | App storage and potentially additional space | These options can permanently remove app data. Do not use them unless you understand what will be lost and have saved anything important. |
Remove replaceable downloads and backed-up files
Delete downloads you no longer need, such as files saved for offline use. For larger personal files, copy them to a computer before removing them from the phone or tablet. A compatible USB data-transfer cable can help with the copy, but it does not increase the device’s storage capacity; the cable and connection must work with both devices. Archive, offload or review unused apps
On Android, review infrequently used apps and use automatic app archiving if your device offers it. Google notes that some storage instructions depend on Android version, and some steps work only on Android 14 and up. On iPhone or iPad, the Storage screen may offer recommendations, and you can offload an app to remove the app itself while keeping its documents and data. Check an app’s data and backup situation before deleting it: deleting is not equivalent to offloading.

Be cautious with Android cache and app data
If an app provides its own download or storage cleanup controls, use those first. Clearing cache removes temporary files; clearing storage or data permanently deletes all the app’s data. Check the app’s own guidance before clearing its storage, especially for apps that hold offline files, drafts or other information you may not have backed up. Retry the app update
After freeing space, return to Google Play or the App Store and try the app update again. If it still fails, follow the troubleshooting path for that store rather than assuming storage is the only cause.
If Google Play downloads or updates are stuck
Google’s troubleshooting steps also include checking your network connection, checking for Android system updates, closing and reopening the Play Store, and restarting the device. These are other possible causes of stalled downloads, not proof that storage played no part. Google Play Help: Fix problems downloading apps with basic troubleshooting steps.

If an App Store app update is stuck
Apple’s app-update guidance is separate from its instructions for installing an iOS or iPadOS system update. Depending on what you see, try manually updating from the App Store account screen, prioritizing the download, or restarting the device. If the App Store displays a payment or account prompt, address that prompt as well; a failed update is not necessarily a storage problem. Apple Support: If you can’t download or update apps on your iPhone or iPad.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the update is iOS or iPadOS itself
For a system update that reports insufficient space, use Apple’s system-update instructions, not just the App Store app-update steps. Apple’s guidance, dated September 17, 2026, recommends enabling Offload Unused Apps or manually deleting apps to make room. If the update remains problematic, find and delete the downloaded update in device storage, then download it again. If that does not work, use a Mac or iTunes as applicable. What the 1 GB guidance does—and doesn’t—mean
Google Play Help uses less than 1 GB free as one sign that an Android device may be low on space for app downloads and updates. Separately, Apple recommends maintaining at least 1 GB free to avoid slowdowns in its iPhone and iPad performance guidance. Apple’s figure is a slowdown recommendation, not a stated installation threshold for app or system updates. Neither figure establishes a universal amount of space every update needs. Apple Support: If your iPhone or iPad is running slow.
