You can often reclaim storage without losing personal files: first check what is using space, then review your device’s cleanup suggestions. Start with temporary files or unused apps, and move or remove photos and documents only after confirming another copy exists and is accessible.
Check what is using storage before cleaning up
Open your device’s storage screen and review the breakdown by category. Built-in recommendations can identify possible cleanup targets and estimate the space they may free, but inspect each item before approving it. Menu names and available options vary by operating-system version and device maker, so use the storage screen on your own device as the guide.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the separate categories for temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps; Windows can show estimated savings before you select items. See Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance.
Mac
Open the current macOS storage settings and review the recommendations shown for your Mac. Apple notes that the storage screens differ in earlier macOS versions. Follow Apple’s Mac storage guidance for the version-specific route.

Start with cleanup that does not remove personal files
Temporary files and unused apps are often safer places to begin than personal documents or photos. Still, review the selected categories: a cleanup tool can offer choices with different consequences, and a large estimated saving does not by itself tell you whether you need the item being removed.

Windows Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. It works on the system drive, so check other drives separately. Its default settings do not manage Downloads or OneDrive and other cloud content unless you configure them to do so; files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense management. Review its configuration before relying on automatic cleanup, using Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions.

Disk Cleanup also presents categories with descriptions. Read the description beside each box before selecting it. In particular, deleting Previous Windows Installation(s) removes the Windows.old files that allow you to roll back to the previous Windows version.
Clear Android cache, not app storage, unless you mean to reset the app
Clear cache removes temporary app data. Clear storage permanently removes all data associated with that app, which may include information you have not synced. Check the app itself and confirm account sync before clearing stored data. Google Play app archiving is another option: it can remove a seldom-used app while preserving personal data and leaving an icon for downloading it again if it remains available on Google Play.

Offload an Apple app instead of deleting it
On iPhone or iPad, Offload App frees the app’s storage while retaining its documents and data. Delete App removes the app and related data. Choose based on whether you want to keep that app data, and check Apple’s app-storage guidance for current instructions.
Move files only after verifying another copy
Moving large videos, downloads, or folders to a computer or external drive can free device storage while keeping the files. Copy first, then open a few transferred files and confirm the expected folders and files are present before deleting anything from the original device. Google describes USB transfer from Android to a computer in its Android storage instructions; Microsoft also describes using external storage to make room for Windows updates in its Windows update storage guidance.

Understand cloud-only files and photo cleanup
Cloud features can reduce local storage by keeping a full-size copy online rather than on the device. That is not the same as having a second independent backup: check that syncing or backup has finished and understand how you would recover a file. Online-only files also require an internet connection to access, so consider whether you need them offline.
OneDrive Files On-Demand on Windows
OneDrive Files On-Demand can make files available without keeping full-size local versions. Online-only files depend on an internet connection. Check the file’s availability state and sync setup before using cloud storage to reclaim space; see Microsoft’s OneDrive and Storage Sense guidance.
Google Photos on Android
Google Photos’ Free up space on this device removes local photo and video copies. Confirm that backup is complete first. After local copies are removed, they may not be available through the phone’s built-in gallery or offline; access depends on Google Photos and the account’s online content. Follow Google’s backup and free-up-space instructions.

If you use Google Photos on an Apple device, its free-up-space operation removes local copies after backup. Those photos then rely on the Google Photos account, app, or website for access, rather than the Apple Photos app, and offline access is limited. This describes Google Photos, not iCloud Photos; review Google’s iOS instructions before using the feature.
Check what still occupies space after cleanup
Some actions only move files to a holding area rather than freeing their storage. On a Mac, moving a file to Bin does not reclaim disk space until you empty Bin. Review its contents before emptying it. Apple also identifies old iPhone or iPad backups as something you can review and remove; keep any backup you may still need. See Apple’s Mac storage guidance.
