Nintendo keeps save data in the console’s system memory, so removing a game installation does not erase your progress. You can download the software again later. Screenshots and videos can be deleted or copied elsewhere, and a compatible microSD Express card can hold software and captures—but never your saves.
Know what is taking up space before deleting anything
Switch 2 storage is divided into categories that behave differently. A game installation, its downloadable content and update data are software data. Screenshots and videos are media files. Save data is your progress: completed levels, unlocked items, settings and other game-specific records. Treating those categories as interchangeable is how people accidentally choose a destructive deletion command.

| Data type | Where it is stored | What normally frees the space | Effect on progress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded software | Console storage or a microSD Express card | Delete the software data from Data Management | Save data remains; the software must be downloaded again to play |
| Downloadable content and update data | Console storage or a microSD Express card, as applicable | Use the software-management options shown by the console | Do not select a save-data deletion command |
| Screenshots and videos | Console storage or a microSD Express card | Delete captures or copy them to a computer first | Game saves are unaffected |
| Save data | Switch 2 system memory | Only a save-data deletion or transfer operation changes it | Deleting it is destructive; a microSD Express card cannot hold it |
To see the current balance, open System Settings → Data Management. Use the storage totals and the list of installed software to decide what to remove. For a new download, check the game’s official product page or its packaging for the required download size; available space must exist either in the console or on a microSD Express card.

Delete software data, not save data
Nintendo’s deletion guidance separates software cleanup from save-data deletion. The software option removes the installed files while leaving the game’s save in system memory. The save-data option removes the progress itself and is not a storage-cleanup shortcut.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Safe deletion procedure
- Open
System Settingsfrom the HOME Menu. - Choose
Data Management. - Select the option for deleting or managing software data. The exact wording can vary with the system language, so follow the label that refers to software, not save data.
- Choose the game or application whose installed files you no longer need.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully. If it says save data will be deleted, back out; that is the wrong command for this task.
- Confirm the software-data deletion and wait for the process to finish before turning off the console.
Afterward, the game’s icon or entry may remain available in your software library even though its installed files are gone. Starting it again will require a download. Nintendo states that deleted software can be downloaded again, provided you use the account and software entitlement associated with that game.
What this does and does not remove
Downloaded game files are the largest reclaimable category for many owners. Downloadable content and update data also consume storage, but the console may present those items through separate management screens. Use the specific software-management choices shown for the title. Never infer that a screen mentioning updates or downloadable content is a save-data screen; verify the heading before confirming.
Deleting the installation does not create a backup of the save, move the save to a card or protect it from later deletion. The save simply remains in the console’s system memory. If you later delete the save-data record itself, the fact that the software was previously removed will not protect it.
Remove screenshots and videos without touching saves
Captures are independent media files. Nintendo supports deleting screenshots and videos from the console or from a microSD Express card. If you want to keep them, copy them before deleting.

Copy captures to a computer
- Power down or follow Nintendo’s safe-removal instructions before taking the microSD Express card out of the console.
- Insert the card into a computer’s compatible SD slot or a card reader/writer that supports the card format.
- Open the card and copy the album folder containing the screenshots and videos to a folder on the computer.
- Open several copied files on the computer to confirm that the transfer completed correctly.
- Keep the original files on the card until you have verified the copies. Nintendo specifically advises preserving the source data until copying is complete.
- Reinsert the card and use the console’s album or data-management controls to delete the captures you no longer need, or retain the card as your archive.
This workflow is media management, not save-data backup. Copying the album folder does not copy game progress, and deleting captures cannot recover a save that was removed through the save-data menu.
When captures are on internal storage
If the screenshots or videos are in console storage, use the Switch 2’s capture-management controls to delete them or move them according to Nintendo’s on-screen instructions. The same verification rule applies: if you are copying to another device, open the destination files before deleting the originals.
Use the right storage card: microSD Express only
Switch 2 storage expansion requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says cards without the microSD Express logo cannot be used for this purpose. A standard microSD card that worked in an earlier console is not automatically compatible with Switch 2 expansion.

| Can the card store downloaded games? | Yes, supported software data can be stored on a microSD Express card. |
| Can it store screenshots and videos? | Yes, captures can be managed on the console or a microSD Express card. |
| Can it store save data? | No. Nintendo states that save data is stored in console system memory and cannot be saved to a microSD Express card. |
| Will any ordinary microSD card work? | No. The card must support the microSD Express standard and carry the appropriate logo. |
Think of the card as an expansion location for installations and media, not as a save backup. Capacity and brand do not change that rule. The official guidance available here does not establish a particular capacity, model or price as best, so select a microSD Express card that meets your space needs and verify compatibility rather than relying on a generic microSD label.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Adding a card can reduce pressure on internal storage, but it does not move existing saves. Your progress remains tied to the console’s system memory even when the associated game files are on the card.
Replace a full card with a larger one
If the current microSD Express card is full, Nintendo provides a computer-based copy procedure for moving to a larger card. This is different from deleting a game and different from transferring a save to another console.
Card-replacement procedure
- Obtain a larger, Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card and a computer with a compatible card slot or reader.
- Remove the original card using Nintendo’s safe-removal instructions and insert it into the computer.
- Copy the Nintendo folder from the original card to a temporary location on the computer. Preserve the folder and its contents as-is; do not rename, rearrange or edit files.
- Eject the original card safely and insert the new card.
- Copy the Nintendo folder to the new card, keeping the same structure.
- Eject the new card safely, insert it into the Switch 2 and allow the console to recognize the copied data.
- Keep the original card and its data until you have confirmed that the new card is usable and the expected software and captures appear.
Nintendo warns that data from multiple cards cannot be combined onto one card. If you have used several cards, choose the card whose data you intend to migrate and follow the official procedure; do not merge Nintendo folders by dragging pieces from different cards together. Nintendo also notes that copied software data is tied to the console and cannot be used across multiple consoles. After a successful migration, use the copied card rather than continuing to treat the pre-copy data as a second working set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the card copy does not accomplish
The copy preserves card-based software data and captures. It does not copy save data because saves are not stored on the card in the first place. A successful card migration therefore gives you more room for installations without changing the location or status of your game progress.

Do not confuse storage cleanup with a console transfer
System Transfer is for moving data from one Switch 2 to another, not for reclaiming space on a single console. Nintendo distinguishes a whole-system transfer from transferring an individual user’s save data. Those procedures have different prerequisites and results.
If you are replacing or adding a console, read the instructions for the transfer type that matches your situation and check the behavior of each game. Nintendo warns that a local transfer can remove some data from the source console, including saves for games that do not support Save Data Cloud. That warning matters even if the destination console receives the rest of the user’s data successfully.
For ordinary storage pressure, stay on the original console and delete software data or captures. Start a console-to-console transfer only when your goal is migration and you have reviewed the game-specific save behavior.
Choose the cleanup method that fits your goal
| Method | Save on current console | Space reclaimed | What happens before you play again | Extra hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete downloaded software data | Preserved | Software-storage space | Download the software again | None |
| Delete screenshots/videos | Preserved | Media space | Nothing for the game; deleted captures are no longer on the console | None |
| Copy captures to a computer, then delete them | Preserved | Media space after verification | Nothing for the game; view the archive on the computer | Computer and compatible card reader or slot |
| Move to a larger microSD Express card | Preserved in system memory | More card capacity for software and captures | Use the copied card and redownload anything not present | Computer and compatible reader or slot |
| Delete save data | Not preserved | Save-data space, if any | Progress must be recreated or restored through an applicable game service | None; destructive choice |
| Console-to-console transfer | Depends on the transfer and game | Not a cleanup method | Follow Nintendo’s transfer and game-specific instructions | Destination console and any required transfer setup |
Troubleshoot the common mistakes
The console still reports low space after deleting a game
Return to System Settings → Data Management and check which category is still large. Screenshots, videos, downloadable content and update data may occupy space separately from the main installation. Remove the category you actually intend to clear, and allow the console to finish the operation before checking the total again.

A card is rejected or does not appear
Confirm that the card is a microSD Express card with the required logo. A conventional microSD card without Express support is not a valid Switch 2 expansion card. If a compliant card is still not recognized, stop copying or deleting data and follow Nintendo’s regional support instructions for card detection; do not assume that reusing a card from another console will work.
A game asks for a download after cleanup
That is expected when its software data was deleted. The save remains on the console, but the playable files must be downloaded again. Check the title’s official download-size information and available space before starting the download.
Some captures are missing after a card change
Do not combine folders from multiple cards. Recheck the original card, the computer copy and the new card separately. Nintendo’s migration guidance requires the Nintendo folder to be copied intact. Keep the old card until you have verified the new one, so you still have the source data if the copy was incomplete.

You selected a save-data deletion option by mistake
Stop and do not continue confirming prompts. Software deletion and save-data deletion are separate operations; only the former is the safe cleanup action described here. If save data has already been deleted, consult Nintendo’s support guidance for the game and any applicable recovery service rather than assuming the installed software or a microSD Express card contains a copy.
A low-risk storage routine
- Check
Data Managementbefore every cleanup so you know which category is consuming space. - Delete software data for games you can redownload, and leave save-data menus untouched unless deleting progress is your deliberate goal.
- Copy screenshots and videos to a computer before removing them, and verify the copies first.
- Use only microSD Express cards for Switch 2 expansion; never treat one as save storage.
- When replacing a card, copy the Nintendo folder intact, never merge multiple cards, and keep the old card until the new one is confirmed.
- Reserve System Transfer for moving to another console, and review each game’s save behavior before starting.
Following those boundaries lets you reclaim installation and media space while keeping your progress in the system memory where Switch 2 stores it.
