Step-by-step: retry or change payment on the existing order
1. Open the affected order in Your Orders
Go to Amazon, sign in, and open Your Orders. Find the order with the failed or declined payment notice. Open its details and check whether Amazon is asking you to update payment, retry a method, or take another action.
Check whether the order is still open, already canceled, or waiting for a payment update. A retry or replacement method can only be applied while Amazon presents an order-level action. If the order has moved to cancellation, treat a new checkout as a separate purchase.
Do not begin in Amazon Pay Activity for a normal retail purchase. Amazon retail orders are managed from Your Orders; Amazon Pay Activity is for purchases made with Amazon Pay at participating third-party merchant sites.
2. Select Retry Payment Method
If the order offers Retry Payment Method, select it to try the existing payment method again. This is the least disruptive path because it attempts to keep the same order, items, shipping choices, and order record.
A retry can still fail if the card is expired, the billing information is wrong, the issuer blocks the transaction, or the payment method is otherwise unavailable. If the retry fails, return to the order and use Change Payment Method when available.
Do not repeatedly press retry without checking the details or the issuer’s response. Each attempt remains subject to Amazon’s payment process and the bank’s authorization decision. One careful retry followed by a method change or issuer call is more useful than cycling through the same failed information.
3. Select Change Payment Method when a replacement is needed
Choose Change Payment Method on the affected order. Amazon may let you select an existing payment option or add another card. Follow the confirmation prompts until the order shows that the new method has been submitted.

Changing the method on this order is different from merely editing a saved card in your account. The order-level action tells Amazon which method to use for this pending transaction.
After confirmation, reopen the order details and look for an updated payment status. If Amazon still displays a payment warning, follow the next action shown there instead of assuming that selecting a card completed authorization. A changed method is submitted for review; it is not a promise that the issuer will approve it.

4. Confirm the card and billing details
Before submitting a retry or replacement, check every detail that can cause an issuer to reject the charge:
- Card number is entered correctly.
- Expiration date has not passed.
- Billing name matches the name recorded by the issuer.
- Billing street address, postal code, and country match the issuer’s records.
- The billing address is in the country of residence permitted for the payment method and Amazon marketplace.
Amazon’s payment-method guidance notes that regional restrictions can apply. A card that works in one country or marketplace may not be accepted for every transaction.

If you recently moved, changed a surname, replaced a card, or changed countries, verify the issuer’s records first.
5. Do not rely on Your Payments to update an order already in process
You can edit saved payment methods under Your Payments, but Amazon states: “Updating a payment method in Your Payments does not reflect on existing orders that are in process.” That account-level edit may help future purchases, but it is not the same as changing payment on the open order.
After checking or correcting a saved card, return to Your Orders and use the payment action displayed on the affected order. If no retry or change option appears, follow the status instructions shown there rather than assuming the account edit was applied.
This distinction matters during a sale. Updating a wallet entry may make the card look current while the pending order still points to the previous authorization details. The order page is the authoritative place to submit a method for that transaction.
When to contact your bank or card issuer
Amazon’s customer-service guidance says, “Only your bank can provide information about why your payment was declined.” Contact the issuer if the payment fails again, even when your account appears to have enough available funds or the card worked for Amazon before.
Issuers can block a transaction because of an incorrect billing detail, an online-commerce setting, a fraud-prevention rule, a spending limit, an authorization problem, or a transaction that their systems consider unusual. Amazon cannot disclose the issuer’s internal decline code. Ask the bank to check the attempted Amazon authorization and confirm whether it must approve the transaction or remove a block.
When you call, have the order time, amount, last four digits of the card, and the billing address available. Do not share your full card number or security code in an untrusted message. If the bank says the card is usable, return to the order and retry or change the method there.

Tell the issuer that this is an online Amazon authorization and mention whether the amount is unusual for your account. The bank may explain that an address mismatch, card-control setting, spending limit, or security review affected the attempt. Only the issuer can clear an issuer-side block; Amazon support cannot override that bank decision.

Before submitting a replacement order, review the checkout page carefully. The item may have a different price, a different delivery estimate, or no available stock. A new order is a new transaction and does not automatically inherit the original order’s terms.
Do not assume that a canceled order can be reopened by changing a saved card after the fact. Once the order is canceled, the practical path is a fresh checkout, subject to whatever price, inventory, shipping, and payment options Amazon displays at that moment.

The card was edited, but the order still says payment failed
This usually means the edit was made in Your Payments rather than on the order. Amazon says account-level updates do not change payment on existing orders in process. Open Your Orders and use Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method for that specific purchase.
There is money available, but the charge is declined
An available balance does not prove that the issuer will approve a particular authorization. Contact the bank, because only the issuer can explain its decline. Ask whether a security rule, online-purchase restriction, address mismatch, spending limit, or authorization issue affected the attempt.
The card worked on an earlier Amazon order
Previous approval does not guarantee approval for every later authorization. Recheck the card’s expiry and billing details, then ask the issuer to review the current declined attempt. Use the order-level retry or replacement controls after the bank confirms what to correct.

- Amazon Pay was used at another website: use Amazon Pay Activity instead of Your Orders for that merchant transaction.
