How to Free Up Storage Space on Nintendo Switch 2 Before Installing a Game

Check available space, safely remove games without deleting save data, and manage screenshots or videos before installing a Nintendo Switch 2 game.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the game’s storage requirement, see how much room is free, then remove software you are not playing or unwanted captures. You can delete or archive downloaded software without deleting its save data. If you need more room regularly, Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for expansion, but not older standard microSD cards or USB hard drives.

Check how much space the game needs and what is available

Start with the game you want to install: its storage requirement varies by title. For a digital game, check its Nintendo eShop listing. For a physical game, check its packaging. Nintendo recommends checking the individual game’s requirement rather than assuming every download needs the same amount of space. See Nintendo’s guidance for when there is not enough space to download digital content on Nintendo Switch 2.

Make a quick comparison before removing anything: note the requirement listed for the title, then check the free-space figures on the console. That gives you a practical target for deciding whether to clear content. It also helps prevent deleting something unnecessarily when you have enough room in the first place. The figures are shown separately for System Memory and an inserted microSD Express card, so check both rather than treating them as one combined number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find available storage on the console

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Check the available space shown at the top for System Memory and, if inserted, the microSD Express card.

This gives you a starting point for deciding whether you need to remove content from the console, the card, or both. Nintendo describes Switch 2 as having 256 GB of storage, with a portion reserved for system use, so the full advertised capacity is not available for games and other user content. The 256 GB figure is stated in Nintendo Support’s Nintendo Switch 2 Data Management FAQ, accessed in 2026. The capacity figure and the location of the free-space display are also documented in Nintendo’s Switch 2 Data Management FAQ and available-space instructions.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

The 256 GB is the console’s nominal storage, not a promise that 256 GB is free for downloads. Nintendo says a portion is reserved for system use. For your immediate decision, the current available-space display matters more than the nominal capacity: use that display alongside the game’s own listed requirement. The listing or packaging is the title-specific reference; there is no single space requirement that applies to every game.

Remove a game without removing its save data

If a downloaded game is taking up room and you are not playing it now, removing its software is usually the most direct cleanup step. Nintendo says deleting software does not delete that game’s save data. The software can be downloaded again later, though you will need the software on the console to play it. Keep the distinction clear: Delete Software removes the game software; Delete Save Data is a separate action.

This is useful when you want to make room temporarily but keep your progress. You can remove the installed software and return to the game later by downloading it again. Removing software is not the same as uninstalling your progress, and you should not choose a save-data option just because the console needs room for a game download. Nintendo warns that deleting save data cannot be undone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 1: Use Quick Delete

  1. Open System Settings > Data Management.
  2. Select Quick Delete.
  3. Select the software you want to remove and follow the on-screen prompts.

Review the selected titles before confirming. Choose games you are comfortable downloading again if you decide to play them later. Quick Delete is a way to select software for removal; it is not a request to erase those games’ save data. Read the confirmation prompts and make sure the selected titles are the ones you intended to remove.

Option 2: Delete software from the HOME Menu

  1. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game whose software you want to remove.
  2. Open the game’s options and choose Manage Software > Delete Software.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.

Nintendo lists these software-removal routes in its instructions for deleting content on Nintendo Switch 2. Do not select a save-data deletion option if your goal is simply to make room by removing a game.

Either route serves the same basic purpose: remove software you can download again, while leaving its save data alone. The practical trade-off is that the game will not be ready to play until its software is back on the console. If you might want to play a title soon, choose a different game or content to remove; if you are comfortable downloading it again when needed, software removal can free room without sacrificing progress.

Archive instead, if the option is available

Archiving is another way to remove downloaded software while keeping its icon on the HOME Menu, where that option is available. Use it when you want to keep the game visible as a reminder or shortcut for downloading it again. It does not mean the software remains installed and ready to play: you may need to download it again before launching it.

SANDISK 512GB microSD Express Card
  • NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
  • EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

In other words, the visible icon is not proof that the full game software is still installed. Archiving preserves the HOME Menu presence while removing the downloaded software. If your priority is a less cluttered HOME Menu, deleting software may suit you better; if you want to keep the icon there, archiving is an alternative when available. In either case, do not confuse the action with deleting save data.

Delete screenshots and videos you no longer need

Captures can also occupy storage. Before deleting anything you want to keep, Nintendo says you can upload screenshots and videos to the Nintendo Switch App for smart devices or transfer them to a computer using a USB cable. Confirm that wanted captures are safely available where you intend to keep them before removing the console copies.

This is a good second place to look if you have already removed software you do not need, or if you prefer to keep your installed games. Decide first whether a screenshot or video is disposable. For anything you want to retain, use one of Nintendo’s stated ways to keep it—a transfer to a computer over USB or an upload to the Nintendo Switch App—before deleting the console copy. Do not assume a capture is backed up merely because you plan to remove it.

Manage captures by storage location

  1. Open System Settings > Data Management.
  2. Select Manage Screenshots and Videos.
  3. Choose the storage location and manage the captures there.

You can also open Album to delete individual captures or select multiple items. Nintendo’s content-deletion instructions cover deleting software, save data, and media; its Data Management FAQ describes options for keeping captures before deletion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Data Management route when you want to work with captures by storage location. Use Album if you want to choose individual items or a group of items to delete. In either route, pause before confirming and verify that you have selected the intended captures. When the goal is to make space, there is no need to delete every capture: keep the ones that matter and remove only the ones you no longer want after backing up anything worth keeping.

Understand what deleting software does—and what it does not do

Removing game software and deleting game save data are different operations. If you delete software to make room, Nintendo says the save data remains. That is why software removal is the appropriate first step when you want to reinstall a game later without discarding its progress.

Save data is stored in System Memory, not on a microSD Express card, and Nintendo says it cannot be copied to a microSD card. Deleting save data is a separate, irreversible action: Nintendo warns that deleted save data cannot be recovered. Do not use save-data deletion as routine storage cleanup, and do not confuse it with Delete Software. Nintendo explains these limits in its Data Management FAQ and microSD Express Card FAQ.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

This distinction answers the most important question to ask before removing a game: will the game’s progress disappear? Nintendo’s answer for deleting software is no; software removal leaves the save data in place. The separate save-data deletion route is not a shortcut for uninstalling a game. Because Nintendo says deleted saves cannot be recovered, only consider that separate action when you truly intend to discard progress—not as a way to clear space for another download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also affects how you think about an expansion card. A card can provide a place for supported content such as software and captures, but it does not move save data off System Memory. Buying a card therefore does not make game saves transferable or create a card-based save backup. Keep the software-versus-save distinction in mind whether you are deleting content or considering added storage.

Choose microSD Express for optional extra capacity

If you regularly run short of room, Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards as its expansion option. Compatible cards can store downloadable software, updates, downloadable content (DLC), screenshots, and videos. Nintendo says compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB can be used. A card is optional for expanding storage, not a prerequisite for installing every game: Nintendo says no individual games currently require extra storage space to play.

That makes a card a longer-term capacity choice rather than a required purchase for the immediate problem. First check the title’s requirement and the current free-space display; then try removing software you can download again or captures you no longer need. If you repeatedly want to keep more downloadable software or captures on the console, a compatible card adds supported storage. Nintendo’s statement that no individual games currently require extra storage space to play does not mean a particular title takes no space; check that game’s requirement and your available space.

Check the card standard before buying

Look specifically for a microSD Express card that meets Nintendo’s requirements. Standard microSD cards used with the original Nintendo Switch do not meet the Switch 2 requirement for game data. Nintendo identifies microSD Express, rather than a standard microSD card, USB thumb drive, or external USB hard drive, as the supported expansion route. Do not assume that an older card or a USB storage device can serve as Switch 2 game storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The label and compatibility standard matter more than simply having a card that physically resembles one used with another console. Nintendo’s requirement for Switch 2 expansion is microSD Express. If a product is described only as a standard microSD card, do not treat it as the supported replacement for a microSD Express card. Similarly, a USB drive or external hard drive is not Nintendo’s documented storage-expansion option for Switch 2.

Know the limits of card storage

  • Save data stays in System Memory. A microSD Express card cannot hold or serve as a copy of game saves.
  • Use one card for your software library. Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card; software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.
  • Capacity is not the whole decision. Check that a card is microSD Express and meets Nintendo’s requirements. The cited guidance does not establish a particular card’s price, availability, or licensing status, so verify those details for the specific product before purchasing.
  • Up to 2 TB is supported. Nintendo documents compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Confirm the standard and the specific product’s details rather than choosing a card based on capacity alone.

If you compare cards, use the factors that matter for this console: microSD Express compatibility, capacity, verified Nintendo licensing status if that matters to you, and current price and availability. Those product details need to be checked for the particular card at the time you shop. Nintendo’s guidance supports the microSD Express standard and up to 2 TB, but it does not establish a price or availability for a specific product. Avoid choosing on unverified read-speed claims; Nintendo’s support information does not provide a product-by-product speed comparison.

Nintendo also recommends using one microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card, so splitting a library among several cards can leave it spread across them rather than creating one consolidated library. If you decide to expand, select one card that meets Nintendo’s requirements and consider your expected storage needs before purchasing. The card does not replace System Memory for save data.

These compatibility and storage limits are described in Nintendo’s microSD Express Card FAQ. If you are only trying to install one game, first compare its listed requirement with the free-space figure in Data Management; a card is a longer-term expansion choice, not the only cleanup method.

If the download still reports that there is not enough space

Use the game’s own requirement and the Data Management figures to identify where the remaining space problem is. Then work through the checks below rather than deleting saves indiscriminately.

  • Recheck the title’s requirement. Requirements vary by game; use the eShop listing for a digital version or the packaging for a physical version.
  • Check both storage locations. At the top of System Settings > Data Management, review System Memory and any inserted microSD Express card. Note which location has available space before choosing what to remove.
  • Remove software you can download again. Use Quick Delete or Manage Software > Delete Software. This removes software, not its save data.
  • Review captures carefully. Back up wanted screenshots and videos to the Nintendo Switch App or a computer before deleting them, then manage them in Manage Screenshots and Videos or Album.
  • Do not treat save deletion as the next routine step. Save data is separate from software, remains in System Memory, and Nintendo warns that deleted saves cannot be recovered.
  • Consider a compatible expansion card only if you need more capacity. For Switch 2, the supported card standard is microSD Express; older standard microSD cards and USB hard drives are not substitutes.

Work through those checks in order: confirm the target, inspect the free-space figures, and choose a type of content you are willing to remove. If you remove a game, remember that you may need to download its software again before playing, while the local save data remains. If you delete captures, first preserve anything you want to keep. This approach focuses cleanup on software and media rather than risking an irreversible save-data deletion.

Nintendo’s not-enough-space guidance covers the game-specific requirement and available remedies. If you have freed space but the console still cannot download the title, confirm the free-space display again and consult Nintendo’s instructions for the particular download issue before deleting additional content.

Where can I find out how much space a game needs?

Check the game’s Nintendo eShop listing for a digital version or its packaging for a physical version. Nintendo says requirements vary by game.

Can I use my original Nintendo Switch microSD card in Switch 2?

Older standard microSD cards used with the original Switch do not meet the Switch 2 requirement for game data. Nintendo documents microSD Express as the supported expansion option.

Can a microSD Express card store game save data?

No. Nintendo says save data remains in System Memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. The card can store downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a microSD Express card to install a game?

Not necessarily. Nintendo says no individual games currently require extra storage space to play. Check the specific title’s requirement and the console’s available-space display first; a compatible card is optional expansion if you need more capacity.

Can I use a USB hard drive or thumb drive for Switch 2 game storage?

Nintendo names microSD Express as the supported expansion route; USB thumb drives and external USB hard drives are not substitutes for Switch 2 software storage.

What happens if I archive a game?

Where the option is available, archiving removes downloaded software while keeping the game’s icon on the HOME Menu. The software may need to be downloaded again before you can play.

The Bottom Line

Check the game’s own storage requirement and the free-space figures in System Settings > Data Management. To make room without losing progress, delete or archive software you can download again, or back up and remove captures you no longer need. Save data is separate and Nintendo warns it cannot be recovered if deleted. If you need lasting extra capacity, choose a compatible microSD Express card; older standard microSD cards and USB drives are not Switch 2 expansion substitutes.
