If your iPhone or iPad says there isn’t enough storage to install an update, first check what is using space: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Review Apple’s recommendations and the app list, then offload or delete items you no longer need. Offloading keeps an app’s documents and data; deleting the app removes its related data.
Check how much storage is in use
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Apple’s general storage instructions refer to this screen as [Device] Storage.
- Review the recommendations at the top, then look through the list of apps and how much storage each uses.
Menu labels and recommendations can vary with the device and software version. Apple does not specify one amount of free space that applies to every update, so use the available-space figure on your device and the update’s own message rather than aiming for a universal gigabyte target. Choose between offloading and deleting an app
Apple identifies enabling Offload Unused Apps or manually deleting apps as ways to address an update that cannot install because of insufficient storage. The two actions handle app data differently:

Try offloading first if you want to keep app data
If Offload Unused Apps appears among the storage recommendations, enable it to remove unused apps while retaining their documents and data. To address one app, tap it in the storage list and review the available actions before choosing. Apple documents the difference between offloading and deleting in its iPhone and iPad storage guide.

Delete only after checking what the app stores
Deleting removes the app and its related data. Some apps may offer a separate way to remove particular documents or data, so inspect the app’s storage screen and the app itself before removing it. Choose an app only if you are comfortable losing its local data or have confirmed that important information is backed up or otherwise available.
Review downloads and other large content
The storage screen can help identify more than apps. Apple’s storage categories include files saved in On My iPhone or On My iPad, Safari downloads, and app content. Review downloaded files and media you no longer need, and remove specific items rather than clearing content blindly.

Check photos and videos before deleting
Photos and videos can use device storage. Apple points to iCloud Photos or deleting content as ways to manage photo and video storage, but first establish where the originals and copies are stored. If content is synced through iCloud, deleting it may affect the synced library rather than simply clearing a separate local copy. Apple advises considering an archive or copy before deleting iCloud content. Follow Apple’s photo and video storage guidance and iCloud storage management instructions before removing anything you want to keep.
Device storage and iCloud storage are different
Device storage is the built-in capacity used by apps and content on the iPhone or iPad. iCloud storage is cloud capacity used for things such as backups, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive. Managing or buying more iCloud storage does not add built-in device capacity or guarantee that an update’s local storage requirement is met. If the device itself is full, focus on the storage screen and content stored on the device; if iCloud is full, manage cloud data separately. Retry the update, then troubleshoot other causes
Once the device shows adequate available storage, try the update again. An update also requires a compatible device, power, and an internet connection. If installation still fails, storage may not be the cause: Apple lists other possibilities including an unsupported device, a slow download, trouble reaching the update server, or an incomplete update. Use Apple’s update troubleshooting steps to check those cases.
When a computer can help you inspect storage
If you want another view of the storage breakdown, Apple says a connected device can be inspected in Finder, the Apple Devices app, or iTunes. This is an inspection option, not a required purchase or a guaranteed way to create the space an update needs. Apple’s storage guide describes the computer view.

Leave system-managed storage alone
Some space is used by iOS or iPadOS and by non-removable assets such as caches, logs, fonts, dictionaries, and indexes. These system-managed categories are not ordinary files to delete manually. Use the storage screen’s recommendations and remove content you recognize instead of trying to erase system files.
