Check what is taking up room, then remove only content you can safely replace or no longer need. If an update still fails after you free space, storage may not be the cause.
Check what is using your iPad’s storage
Open Settings > General > iPad Storage. The screen shows available space, recommendations, and a list of apps with their storage use. Select an app to see more detail, but note that some cached or temporary data may not be included in the displayed amount. Review the recommendations and largest items first. Common candidates include offline video and music, files saved in the Files app, app data used for offline work, large Messages attachments, photos and videos, and apps you no longer use. Removing a download or local file can free space without removing the app itself.
Choose what to remove—and what to keep
Offload an app to keep its data
Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data. If the app is still available, you can download it again and continue with the retained data. On the app’s entry in iPad Storage, choose the offload option. Apple also documents automatic offloading through Offload Unused Apps. Apple Support distinguishes offloading from deleting in its guidance for an iPhone or iPad running slowly.

Delete an app to remove its related data
Deleting removes the app and its related data, so use this for apps you no longer need or whose data you have safely backed up. If the data matters, check whether it is synced or backed up before deleting; reinstalling an app does not restore data that was removed with it.
Remove local downloads and files
Look for downloaded shows, films, music, books, and other media that can be downloaded again later. In Files, review locally stored documents and downloads, and in apps, check for offline files you can recreate or retrieve from their original service. Delete only items you recognize and no longer need offline.

Make room without losing photos or videos
If photos or videos are taking up space, first make sure you have a copy you want to keep. Apple’s iPad guide describes backing up photos and videos to iCloud and then removing them from the device. Cloud storage and the iPad’s local capacity are separate: uploading or syncing alone does not prove that local originals have been removed. Confirm the backup and the removal workflow before relying on the space being freed. See Manage storage on iPad.

Review Messages attachments
Large photos, videos, and other attachments in Messages can occupy local space. Review attachments before deleting them, especially if you need to keep a conversation’s media or do not have another copy.

How much free space should you leave?
Apple Support advises maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns. That is slowdown guidance, not a promise that 1 GB is enough for every app or iPadOS update. Apple’s update instructions do not give one universal free-space amount that guarantees an installation will succeed.
After removing content, return to Settings > General > iPad Storage and check the available-space reading. If the warning remains, or the figure has not changed as expected, review what you removed and whether it was stored locally. Some cached or temporary data may make app-detail figures differ from the space you can reclaim.

If an iPadOS update still will not install
Freeing space is a sensible first step when the message says there is not enough room, but Apple lists other possible update problems, including an incompatible iPad model, internet or update-server access, and verification errors. Use Apple’s troubleshooting steps for an iPhone or iPad that won’t update to identify the error and follow the relevant fix rather than repeatedly deleting content.
- Compatibility: Confirm that your specific iPad model supports the iPadOS version you are trying to install.
- Connection or server access: Check that the iPad has internet access and can reach Apple’s update service.
- Verification: If the update reports a verification problem, follow Apple’s steps for that error; it is not necessarily a storage issue.
If apps won’t install even when storage is available
Check whether installation is restricted by Screen Time or another setting. Apple documents Screen Time limits and the Offload Unused Apps setting in its iPad guide to App Store restrictions and settings. If available storage is no longer the issue, a restriction or an app-specific problem may explain why an install is blocked.
A removable drive can help with a manual transfer of compatible files, but it does not increase the iPad’s internal storage. The cited Apple guidance does not establish that apps or iPadOS updates can be installed to external storage.
