You can usually reclaim Android tablet storage without sacrificing important files: first check what is using space in Settings > Storage, then remove only items you recognize, clear selected app caches, archive apps you rarely use, or make verified copies of files before removing them from the tablet. The exact menu names and available options depend on the tablet’s maker and Android version.
Start by finding what is using your tablet’s storage
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories shown. This is the tablet’s local storage, not the space available in your Google Account. Use the category breakdown to target a specific source—such as downloads, apps, or media—instead of deleting files at random.

Google’s cleanup instructions include a Free up space flow that lets you select files. The steps and controls can vary, and Google notes that some cleanup options are available only on Android 14 and later. If an option is missing or the labels differ, use your manufacturer’s instructions for the tablet’s model and software version.
Remove downloads and offline media you can get again
Look through the Downloads folder for files you no longer need, and use media apps’ own controls to remove downloaded movies or music. Google documents removing downloaded Google TV content as one example. Before deleting an offline copy, make sure you can access or download it again; removing it can leave you without access when you are offline.

Clear an app’s cache, not its data
An app’s cache is temporary data. Clearing it may free some space, although the app may load more slowly the next time you open it while it rebuilds that cache. Clear storage or Clear data is different: it can permanently remove the app’s data, settings, or locally stored content.
If you are unsure what an app stores locally, leave its storage or data controls alone and check for cleanup options inside the app first. Do not treat clearing app data as a routine or harmless storage shortcut.

Archive or uninstall apps you rarely use
Google Play’s automatic app archiving can remove rarely used apps while preserving their personal data and leaving the app icon on the device. You can download an archived app again if it is still available on Google Play. This can be a useful middle ground when you want to reduce the installed app footprint without discarding its saved data.

Uninstalling is not the same as archiving: uninstalling removes the app. Before uninstalling, consider whether it holds files or information that are not synced or backed up elsewhere.

Free up space from Google Photos only after verifying backup
In Google Photos, first confirm that the tablet is signed in to the Google Account you intend to use and that backup has completed for the photos and videos you want to keep. Then, if appropriate, use Free up space on this device. This action removes local copies that Google Photos has backed up; it is not simply a way to hide files from the tablet.
After local copies are removed, the items remain accessible in Google Photos and at photos.google.com when you are online and signed in. They may no longer appear in the tablet’s built-in gallery or be available offline. Google also says photos and videos less than 30 days old may remain on the device.

- High Performance Ratings: Features UHS-I Class 10, U3, V30, and A1 speed ratings ensuring reliable performance for HD video recording, fast application launches, and smooth data transfers across all compatible devices
- Compatible with All Your Devices: Compatible with smartphones, tablets, dashcams, drones, security cameras, action cameras, Nintendo Switch, and more. Each card comes with an SD adapter, allowing easy use with laptops and digital cameras
- Durable & Reliable Performance: Built to survive tough environments: waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, and magnet-proof. Whether you're on the road, in the wild, or indoors, your data is protected
- Flexible Storage Options: Choose from 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB to suit your usage - from daily apps and games to HD videos, photos, and important files. For example, the 128GB model can store up to 6 hours of HD video or over 37,000 photos
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance
Do not assume that a photo is backed up just because it appears in the app. Backup may be incomplete, disabled, out of account storage, or limited by account or app settings. If a file is irreplaceable, keep another verified copy before deleting its local version.

For documents, downloads, and media you want to keep locally available somewhere else, copying to a computer or compatible external storage gives you a separate copy. Confirm that the copy opens correctly before deleting the tablet’s original. A move can free space, but a copy-and-check step is safer for files you cannot replace.

|---|---|---|
| Computer over USB | You want a separate copy of files and have access to a computer. | Confirm the transfer completed and open a few files from the computer. |
| Compatible microSD card | Your tablet supports microSD and you want portable local storage. | Check support and capacity for the exact tablet model; not every Galaxy tablet has a card slot. |
| Compatible USB OTG storage | Your tablet supports USB OTG and you want to copy files to a USB drive. | Check the tablet’s port, adapter requirements, and storage compatibility, then verify the copied files. |
Samsung documents copying and moving files to external storage on supported Galaxy tablets. Compatibility is model-dependent: not every tablet supports microSD, not every app can be moved, and Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage. An SD card therefore does not universally expand the tablet’s internal app storage. Consult the exact model’s manufacturer specifications or support page before buying or relying on external storage.
Keep tablet storage separate from Google Account storage
Settings > Storage shows local capacity on the tablet. Google Photos’ Manage storage concerns Google Account storage shared across services such as Google Drive, Photos, and Gmail. Cleaning up account storage can affect cloud files or services; it does not simply free space on the tablet.
Google states that each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across Google services. That is account storage, not an additional 15 GB of tablet capacity. Before deleting anything through account storage management, check what service and files are taking up that space.

A safe order for reclaiming space
- Open Settings > Storage and identify the largest category.
- Review downloads and remove only files you recognize as unnecessary; remove offline media through the relevant app.
- Clear selected app caches if needed, but avoid Clear storage or Clear data unless you understand what will be erased.
- Archive apps you rarely use, or uninstall only after considering locally saved app data.
- For photos and videos, verify Google Photos backup or create another copy before removing local originals.
- For files you want to keep, copy them to a computer or compatible external storage and verify the copies before deleting anything from the tablet.
These built-in options cover common cleanup needs without relying on generic cleaner apps. When a device-specific feature is unavailable, use the tablet maker’s model-specific guidance rather than assuming another Android tablet has the same controls.
