The safest way to reclaim space on a Pixel is to identify what is filling device storage, confirm backups, and remove only replaceable local copies. Start at Settings > Storage, review the categories, then use Free up space to inspect suggested items one by one. For photos, verify Google Photos says Backup complete before removing device copies. For files you need to keep, copy them to a computer and verify the transfer before deleting the phone originals.
This approach avoids the two most damaging mistakes: treating a backed-up view in Google Photos as proof that every device folder was uploaded, and tapping Clear storage when you meant Clear cache. Menu names and feature availability vary by Pixel model, Android release, locale and app version; some Pixel instructions apply only to Android 11 and later.

Check what is using storage before removing anything
Open Settings, tap Storage, and wait for the category breakdown to finish. The largest category is your starting point, but do not assume the biggest number is disposable. Photos and videos may be irreplaceable, an app’s stored data may contain offline work, and a large “Other” or “System” category may include files Android needs.
Tap the storage categories and look for an item-level view. Pixel software can show apps, images, videos, audio, documents, downloads and other files separately. Then open Free up space if it appears. The review screen can suggest photos, videos, unused apps or files, but it is a selection list, not an instruction to delete everything.

- Record the current free-space figure so you can tell whether a change helped.
- Open each suggested group and expand the selection where possible.
- Uncheck anything whose identity, backup status or purpose is unclear.
- Use the item preview, filename, date and folder information to decide individually.
- Only after checking the selection, move items to Trash, the bin or the app’s removal control.
There is no universal amount of space that a Pixel will recover. The result depends on the phone’s actual contents, including how many local photos, downloads and cached files it has.
Choose a cleanup method by its risk
Different actions have different consequences. Use this comparison before you tap a confirmation button.
| Action | What leaves the phone | Backup required? | Offline or built-in-gallery access afterward | Recovery characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual review in Storage or Files | Only the files you select | No, unless you are deleting a file you cannot replace | Unavailable for removed local files | May remain in Trash or a bin for a limited period, depending on the app |
| Google Photos Free up space | Local copies of photos and videos that meet the feature’s criteria | Yes; confirm Backup complete | Backed-up items remain viewable in Google Photos while online, but not in the built-in gallery or offline from the phone | Cloud copies remain; restoring a local copy requires downloading it again |
| Clear cache for an app | Temporary files generated by the app | No | The app remains installed with its account and settings | Usually low risk; the app may rebuild the cache |
| Clear storage for an app | All data that app stores locally | Only if the app separately syncs or backs up that data | You may be signed out and lose offline content or unsynced work | Permanent for the app’s local data |
| Copy files to a computer, then delete phone copies | The verified duplicate you choose to remove | The computer copy is an off-device backup only after you check it | Files remain available from the computer, not from the phone | Recoverable from the verified computer copy |
Remove local photos only after Google Photos confirms backup
Google Photos is often the fastest way to reduce a photo-heavy library, but its cleanup command removes files from the phone. It is not the same as deleting items from your Google Photos library. Before using it, open Google Photos, tap your account avatar, and check that the correct Google Account is active and the status reads Backup complete.

Check folders, not just the main Photos view
Photos can display images from device folders that are not included in backup. In Google Photos, open the backup settings and review Back up device folders. Enable backup for folders that contain screenshots, messaging attachments, downloads, camera imports or app-created media if you need those files preserved in the cloud. Wait for those folders to finish uploading before cleanup.
An image appearing in the Photos view does not by itself prove that its original device folder has been backed up. Folder-level review matters when the phone contains media created or downloaded outside the camera app.
Use Free up space with its local-access trade-off in mind
- In Google Photos, tap your account avatar.
- Choose Free up space.
- Read the amount and the categories the screen proposes to remove.
- Open the review list and inspect the selection rather than accepting it blindly.
- Confirm only after you are comfortable losing the phone’s local copies.
The backed-up versions remain available in Google Photos or at photos.google.com when you are online. They will not continue to appear in the built-in gallery, and you cannot view the removed versions offline from the phone. If another gallery app, editing app or travel workflow depends on local files, download or copy the required items before proceeding.

Google’s current help wording notes that items less than 30 days old may remain on the device after Free up space. Treat that as expected behavior rather than evidence that the cleanup failed. Recent captures can therefore continue to consume local storage until they age past that threshold or are handled manually.

- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and power, then allow Google Photos to finish.
- Check the active account; backing up to a different account can make the expected library appear incomplete.
- Review Back up device folders for the folders that contain the missing items.
- Do not use Free up space for a folder until its contents are confirmed in the cloud.
If an important image is not visible in Google Photos on another device or at photos.google.com, keep the local original and resolve backup first.
Handle downloads and large media inside the app that created them
Downloaded films, music, podcasts, maps and social-media media are often stored in app-specific locations. The app that downloaded an item usually has the safest removal control because it can remove the offline copy without deleting your account library or saved settings.
Remove offline media from its own app
Open the relevant streaming, music, podcast, reading or navigation app and look for labels such as Downloads, Offline, Saved to device or Manage downloads. Delete individual episodes, albums, videos or maps you can stream again later. This preserves the online item while reclaiming the local download.
If you cannot identify the source app, use the Pixel storage browser or Files by Google to sort by size and location. Do not delete an unfamiliar folder merely because it is large; first open it, identify the owning app and determine whether the content is synchronized elsewhere.

- Unlock the Pixel and connect it to the computer with the USB cable.
- On the phone’s USB notification, select File transfer or the equivalent data-transfer option.
- Open the Pixel’s storage on the computer and copy the chosen folders to a clearly named destination.
- Wait for the transfer to finish; large videos and many small files can take different amounts of time.
- Open representative photos, videos and documents from the computer copy. Check file counts or folder sizes for a large batch.
- Only after verification, delete the phone versions and empty the phone’s Trash if you need the space immediately.
A copy that merely appears in a computer folder is not yet a verified backup. Test files from the destination before removing originals.
Clear app cache, not app storage, when temporary files are the problem
Android’s two similarly named controls have very different effects. To reach them, open Settings > Apps > See all apps, choose the app, then tap Storage & cache.
Clear cache
Clear cache removes temporary data such as generated thumbnails, web resources and other rebuildable files. The app, its account, settings and normally its locally stored content remain. The app may be slower on its next launch while it recreates needed cache files, so the space recovered can decrease over time.

Clear storage
Clear storage permanently deletes all app data. Google’s Pixel help defines it plainly: “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.” Depending on the app, that can remove downloaded media, drafts, unsynchronized records, preferences, login sessions and databases. You may need to sign in again.
Do not use Clear storage as a routine cleanup shortcut. First inspect the app’s own download manager, export or sync options. Consider clearing storage only when you have confirmed that the app’s important data is synchronized or intentionally disposable and that you can restore the account and settings.
When cache clearing is unlikely to help
Some apps keep large offline libraries or user-created files outside the cache. Clearing cache will not remove those items. If the storage screen shows the app’s data—not cache—as the major component, use the app’s own controls or move its files to a computer instead.

Use Smart Storage automation with the documented limits
Pixel Help describes Smart Storage as a way to clear backed-up photos and videos automatically when storage is almost full. Automation is convenient, but it still removes local copies and should be enabled only if your workflow tolerates online-only access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFiles by Google documents more specific conditions for its Smart Storage feature on supported Pixels running Android S: automatic deletion applies to Google Photos-backed-up photos that have been on the device for 60 days when device storage falls below 25%. These conditions are not a promise that every Pixel, Android release or Files by Google version exposes the same switch.
- Open the storage or Files by Google settings on your particular Pixel.
- Locate Smart Storage and read the current description and thresholds shown there.
- Confirm that Google Photos backup is active for the folders you care about.
- Enable the feature only if losing local copies after the stated conditions is acceptable.
- Review the setting periodically after Android or app updates, because labels and support can change.
If the option is absent, do not assume the phone is malfunctioning; availability depends on supported software and device configuration. Manual review gives you more control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep phone storage separate from Google Account storage
There are two different capacity limits. Phone storage is the physical space inside the Pixel. Google Account storage is shared by Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. Google currently provides up to 15 GB per account under its standard allowance.
Buying or adding cloud capacity can allow a blocked backup to complete, but it does not remove files from the Pixel by itself. You still need to use Google Photos’ local cleanup, delete downloads, clear appropriate caches or move files off the phone.
Conversely, freeing several gigabytes on the Pixel does not increase the account’s cloud quota. If uploads stop because the account is full, review large items in Google Photos, Drive and Gmail or add capacity; if the phone is full, perform a local cleanup as described above.

Backup counting and historical upload terms can vary by Pixel generation and backup quality. Do not rely on legacy conditions when planning storage for a current device; check the account’s present storage breakdown and the backup settings shown on your phone.
Troubleshoot common cleanup surprises
The free-space number barely changed
- Wait for Android’s storage calculation to refresh after a large deletion.
- Empty the relevant Trash or bin if you need the space now; retained items can continue to occupy storage.
- Check whether the deleted photos were younger than 30 days and therefore remained on the device after Google Photos cleanup.
- Look for another large category, such as downloads, offline media or app data.
Photos disappeared from the gallery
That is expected when Google Photos removes local copies. The backed-up items should remain in Google Photos while online, but the built-in gallery and offline viewing no longer have the phone files. Download specific items again if another app needs a local copy.
An app lost its settings or logged out
You likely used Clear storage, not Clear cache. Sign in again only after confirming the app’s data was synchronized. Unsynced drafts or offline records may not be recoverable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The computer cannot see the Pixel
- Unlock the phone and reconnect the cable.
- Open the USB notification and select File transfer, not charge-only mode.
- Try a different USB port or a known data-capable cable.
- Keep the screen unlocked while the computer enumerates the storage.
Backup still says it cannot finish
Check both limits: the Pixel may lack local working space, or the Google Account may have exhausted its shared allowance. Resolve the applicable limit separately. Cloud capacity helps an account-quota problem; it does not replace local deletion or file transfer on the phone.
A repeatable, low-risk maintenance routine
Use this sequence whenever storage becomes tight:
- Check Settings > Storage and note the largest categories.
- Open Free up space and inspect every suggested item.
- Confirm Google Photos backup status and device-folder coverage before removing local media.
- Delete offline downloads from the app that created them.
- Copy irreplaceable files to a computer and verify that copies open.
- Clear cache for selected apps when temporary data is the only target.
- Avoid Clear storage unless app data is deliberately disposable or safely synchronized.
- Review Smart Storage’s current conditions before enabling automation.
- Recheck the storage screen and empty bins only after you are certain nothing important is pending recovery.
The safest cleanup is selective: diagnose first, preserve a verified copy when needed, and treat any action that removes local data as a deliberate change to how that content is accessed.
