Start by checking how much space your phone or tablet actually has free, then remove downloads or unused apps you can restore or replace. Avoid deleting a game’s data or personal photos until you have confirmed they are backed up. There is no universal amount of free space that guarantees a game will install: check its current store listing and any additional-download prompt.
Check available storage before deleting anything
On Android, open Settings > Storage and review the categories using space. Menu names can vary by manufacturer and Android version. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > [device] Storage to see app-by-app usage and Apple’s storage recommendations.

Google Play says less than 1 GB available may indicate low storage during app-download troubleshooting; Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB free to avoid slowdowns. Neither figure is a game-installation guarantee or a universal requirement. A particular game may need more room, including for resources downloaded after its initial installation. Google Play’s troubleshooting guidance and Apple’s general storage advice provide context, but use the game’s current store listing and installation prompts for its needs.
Free space without risking important files
Remove downloads you recognize
Look for files you no longer need, such as old downloads, offline movies, and music. On Android, the Files app can help find files by category and sort them by name, date, or size; see Android’s file-management instructions. For offline video or music, remove downloads from the app that saved them when possible, rather than deleting files without knowing what they are.

Confirm photo backups before removing local copies
If Google Photos backup is enabled and complete, its Android instructions allow you to remove device copies while keeping backed-up photos accessible online. First confirm the correct account is selected and that the backup has finished. Do not treat a photo as backed up merely because it appears in the app: check its backup status before deleting the original.
Uninstall or preserve apps you no longer use
Removing an unused app can reclaim its installed software, but its data may be handled differently depending on the device and action. Before removing a game, confirm whether its progress is tied to an account or cloud save; local progress is not guaranteed to survive uninstalling it.

On supported Android devices, Google Play’s app archiving can remove app software while retaining personal data and leaving an icon for downloading the app again, if it remains available. Availability depends on the device, Play support, and the app. See Android’s guidance on managing unused apps.
On iPhone and iPad, offloading removes an app but retains its documents and data; deleting removes the app and its related data. Offloading is the safer option when you want the app’s documents and data kept on the device, though it does not guarantee that every game’s progress is preserved. Check the game’s save or account status before deleting it.

Android: distinguish cache from app storage
If an app has accumulated temporary files, clearing its cache may help, but it may reclaim little space and the app can be slower to open next time. Google explains: “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them.” See Google Play’s storage guidance.
Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage (which may be labelled “Clear data”). Clearing storage permanently removes all data for that app. Avoid using it on a game unless you are prepared to lose its local data and have verified any saves you need.

Android SD cards
Some Android phones with an SD-card slot let you format a card as internal, or adoptable, storage and install supported apps there. This option is not available on every device, and formatting can erase the card; adoption also ties it to that device. Back up the card and check your phone maker’s instructions before proceeding. A card formatted as portable storage is for files, not app installation: Google’s guidance says, “You can’t install apps on the SD card,” specifically for portable storage. See Android’s SD-card guidance.

On supported Android phones, Files by Google can move or copy files to a compatible USB storage device; check both the phone’s port and drive support in Files by Google’s USB-storage instructions. Compatible connectors or adapters and supported apps can also let an iPhone access external drives and memory cards, as described in Apple’s external-storage guide. These are ways to manage or move personal files; they do not establish an external drive as a universal game-install destination.

Retry the install and troubleshoot if it still fails
- After cleanup, return to the device’s storage screen and confirm that available space increased.
- Check the game’s current store listing and any in-game download prompt. Do not assume an initial download figure represents the full space the game will use after it installs and downloads additional resources.
- Try the installation again. If it fails despite sufficient reported space, check your network and the app-store troubleshooting steps, then restart the device if appropriate.
- If the storage controls or SD-card options differ from these paths, consult the instructions for your exact device model and software version.
