How AI Assistants Use Conversations and Memories to Personalize Responses

AI assistants can use saved memories, earlier chats, or eligible data for model improvement—but these are distinct features with different controls and deletion effects.

AI assistants can personalize later replies using information you ask them to save or relevant details from earlier chats—but those features differ by product. A saved memory, past-chat personalization, the conversation history itself, and use of chats to improve models are separate things. They do not establish that every assistant builds one complete profile of you.

What does an AI assistant “remember” about you?

“Remembering” can describe several different kinds of information use. The distinction matters because each can have different controls and deletion effects.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Current conversation context: Information available within the conversation you are having. The product documentation discussed here does not specify the underlying technical implementation.
  • Saved memory: A fact or preference retained for future personalization, often one you ask the assistant to remember. OpenAI documents controls to review, edit, and delete saved memories.
  • Past-chat personalization: Relevant information from earlier conversations used to tailor a later response. OpenAI and Google document versions of this feature.
  • Model improvement: Eligible chat data used by a provider to improve models. This is a separate data-use question, not the same thing as an assistant recalling information to personalize your reply.

These categories should not be collapsed into a single claim that an assistant has a complete or permanent profile. The documented features differ by provider, and the available documentation does not establish one shared profile format or architecture.

How ChatGPT uses saved memories and past chats

OpenAI describes two sources for personalization: saved memories and relevant information drawn from past conversations. You can ask ChatGPT to remember information, and OpenAI says chat-history-derived information may change as the system updates what seems useful to remember. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Saved memories and the chats where you mentioned those details are separate. OpenAI states: “Deleting a saved memory prevents it from being used in future personalization, but it does not remove mentions of that information from past conversations.” See Memory in ChatGPT.

Deleting a chat does not erase a separate saved memory. If you want to remove both the original conversation and the saved detail used for future personalization, manage each separately using the current controls described in OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Can AI use your old conversations?

ChatGPT

OpenAI documents using relevant information from past conversations to personalize future responses. Its Help Center says this history-derived information can change over time. This is distinct from a saved memory that you explicitly ask ChatGPT to retain. The two sources are described in OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Gemini

Google describes “personalization with memory of past Gemini chats.” Its Gemini Apps Help page explains how to find and delete past chats, and says users can ask Gemini whether information from past chats was used. Google cautions that personalization may take a short time to stop after a chat is deleted; changes to connected Google app data may take days to affect Gemini.

Claude

Anthropic’s documentation cited here explains chat use for model improvement, Incognito chats, and retention. It does not establish that Claude maintains a cross-chat personal profile equivalent to the documented OpenAI and Google features. Model-improvement disclosures should not be treated as proof of persistent personalization. See Anthropic’s data-retention guidance.

How to check what is retained or used

  1. Open the product’s memory or personalization controls. Review saved information and any setting that allows past conversations to inform future replies. Labels and availability can vary by account, plan, platform, and region.
  2. Review chat history separately. Delete conversations you no longer want in your history. Do not assume that deleting a chat also removes a separate saved memory.
  3. Change model-improvement settings if that is your concern. Turning off memory is not the same as opting out of model improvement, and the reverse is also true.
  4. Check for documented temporary modes. Use Temporary Chat or Incognito when appropriate, but read what the provider says about their limits and any separate safety or retention handling.
  5. Allow for any stated deletion delay. Google says the effect of deleting a Gemini chat on personalization may not be immediate. Do not interpret a delay as proof that the chat remains visible in your ordinary history, or assume deletion instantly changes every downstream use.

Does turning off memory stop AI training?

No: memory and model-improvement controls address different uses of data. OpenAI says personal-account chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. It says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default. Temporary Chat is described as not creating memories or appearing in history; OpenAI also notes that limited safety-relevant context may be used in rare high-risk situations, separately from memory personalization. Review OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ and its Temporary Chat FAQ for current account-specific controls.

Anthropic says that when model improvement is enabled, data from new or resumed chats may be retained in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to five years. That retention statement is scoped to those chats and pipelines; it is not a claim that Claude maintains a personal cross-chat profile. Anthropic says switching off model improvement means previous or new chats will not be used for future training, while data already included in runs in progress or trained models is treated separately. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. See Anthropic’s data-retention guidance and its model-training explanation.

What deleting a chat does—and does not—mean

Deletion effects depend on the product and the kind of information involved. For ChatGPT, deleting a conversation does not erase a separate saved memory; deleting the memory prevents future personalization from using it, but does not remove the original mention from a past conversation. Google says Gemini personalization may take a short time to stop after chat deletion, and connected-app data changes may take days to affect the experience. Those statements do not establish immediate removal from every downstream system.

Model-improvement data has its own rules. For example, Anthropic distinguishes future training use from data already incorporated into training runs in progress or trained models. Do not treat a chat deletion or memory toggle as a universal substitute for checking the provider’s data controls and retention terms.

  • One Button, Your AI, Instantly: The BRS-180 has a dedicated AI button on top. Press it once and it wakes Google Assistant, Siri, or whichever assistant lives on your paired device. Ask it anything, play music, set a reminder, check the weather, or control your smart home, all from across the room without picking up your phone.
  • Pairs in Seconds and Stays Connected: Bluetooth connects to any iOS or Android phone, tablet, or laptop with no app and no account required. Once paired, the 12-hour LED clock display syncs the correct time on its own. Three display settings keep you in control: full brightness, dimmed, or completely off for total darkness. A memory function saves your last volume, sleep sound, and light settings automatically.
  • Built for the Nightstand, Night After Night: The soft fabric-wrapped enclosure sits on a nightstand, dresser, or shelf without looking like a gadget. Plug it in over USB-C and it runs continuously, or use the built-in rechargeable battery for up to 6 hours of wireless playback. Either way it is ready when you are. Available in White, Black, and Green.
  • 16 Sleep Sounds, Fully Customizable: Choose from 16 built-in sleep sounds that play straight from the speaker with no phone, no app, and no subscription. Set a 15, 30, or 60-minute sleep timer and the sound fades out by itself. Want a different library? Connect it to any PC with the included USB-C cable and swap out every sound stored on the device.

Why persistent context can be useful—and sensitive

Remembered preferences can spare someone from repeating context. The trade-off is that information shared for one task may influence a later answer in a different setting if a product retains or references it. That can be unwelcome even when the assistant is functioning as documented.

A 2026 qualitative study, “When Disability Disclosure Travels: Memory, Privacy, and Contextual Integrity in Conversational AI,” interviewed 12 adults with disabilities in the United States. Participants described memory reducing repeated disclosure while also allowing disability information to travel into contexts where it did not belong. This is interview evidence about those participants, not a rate for all users or proof that every assistant behaves this way. The paper is available at arXiv.

A separate arXiv preprint examines health-privacy risks in ChatGPT logs and memory, but the available evidence here does not support a generalizable percentage or an overall risk ranking across providers. More broadly, no representative cross-platform statistic establishes how often assistants infer personal traits or build profiles from conversations.

How to reduce unwanted personalization

  • Inspect and edit or delete saved memories when the product offers those controls.
  • Manage chat history separately from memory, and confirm whether deleting one affects the other.
  • Check model-improvement settings independently of personalization controls.
  • Use a provider’s documented temporary or incognito mode when you do not want to create or reference personalization memory, while reviewing its separate retention terms.
  • Avoid sharing highly sensitive details if the provider’s stated handling makes you uncomfortable.

Product features and setting labels can change, and availability may vary by plan, account type, platform, or region. Provider documentation describes its own controls; it is not independent evidence of how effective those controls are in every circumstance.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
