How to Free Up RAM When Your Computer Is Running Slowly

Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac to see whether memory is contributing to a slowdown before closing apps, changing settings, or considering an upgrade.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking memory use in your computer’s built-in system monitor, then close only the apps you recognize and no longer need. On Windows, use Task Manager; on a Mac, use Activity Monitor’s Memory pane and watch memory pressure. If those indicators do not point to memory, check storage, startup and background activity, software, and disk health before changing settings or buying RAM.

The goal is not to make a memory meter show as much unused RAM as possible. Windows and macOS use system resources to run apps and support the work you are doing. First look for a pattern that connects high memory use with the slowdown; then choose a step aimed at that cause.

First, check whether RAM is actually the bottleneck

A slow computer is not automatically short of RAM. Low storage, apps or processes running in the background, software issues, incompatible apps, disk problems, and hardware limitations can also make a computer feel sluggish. Closing apps may help when memory use is high, but there is no universal cleanup that guarantees a speed increase.

Use the system monitor for your operating system before taking action. On Windows, inspect Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views. On macOS, use Activity Monitor’s Memory pane and pay particular attention to its memory pressure graph rather than treating unused memory as the goal. Apple explains that macOS manages memory and that free memory alone does not show whether the system needs more.

Look for evidence, not just a number in isolation. Ask whether the slowdown began during a particular task, whether one app is using resources while it is open, and whether closing that app changes how the computer feels. On a Mac, note whether memory pressure increases during the same app or workload that feels slow. On Windows, use Task Manager to see which apps are active and review overall resource use in Performance. These checks can help decide what to try next; they do not prove that RAM is the only cause.

Make one change at a time when practical, then check the same workload again. If closing an app makes little difference, reopening it or repeatedly closing other unfamiliar processes is unlikely to be a useful diagnosis. Move on to other likely causes, such as storage, startup activity, software updates, app compatibility, or disk problems.

Free up RAM on Windows 11 or Windows 10

  1. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. In Processes, review the apps using resources and close apps you recognize but are not using. Save any work first; closing an app can discard unsaved changes. If you are unsure what an entry is, do not end it just because its name is unfamiliar. Focus on apps you opened and understand.
  2. Check overall resource use. Select Performance in Task Manager to review resource use. Use this as a check on whether memory may be contributing to the slowdown, rather than assuming every performance problem is a RAM problem. Compare what you see with the situation in which the computer feels slow: an app that is busy only during a demanding task may be behaving differently from an app that remains active when you are not using it.
  3. Reduce unnecessary startup activity. Open Startup apps in Task Manager and disable apps that do not need to launch automatically. Keep anything you rely on to start with Windows enabled. If you are unsure what an item does, leave it alone and look up its identity before changing it. Startup changes address which apps launch automatically; they are not a substitute for checking what is consuming resources during your current session.
  4. Close unneeded browser tabs and apps. Recheck how the computer feels after closing work you no longer need. If performance remains poor, restart the PC; a restart can clear accumulated app and background activity. Save open work before restarting. After the restart, try the same task again and see whether the slowdown returns when a particular app or workload is active.
  5. Check drive space separately. In File Explorer, check whether the Windows drive is low on free space. If it is, review Windows storage settings and temporary files before deleting anything. Removing files frees storage; it is not the same operation as directly freeing RAM. Review what Windows proposes to remove and avoid deleting files you still need. Microsoft’s storage guidance explains ways to free drive space, but storage cleanup should be treated as its own troubleshooting step.
  6. Investigate other causes if memory does not explain the slowdown. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also recommends checking for updates, scanning for malware, and reviewing background app activity. These can address other sources of poor performance; they should not be described as guaranteed RAM-clearing steps. If the computer remains slow after a restart and after checking memory use, these broader checks may be more relevant than closing additional apps.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 performance guidance is at Tips to improve PC performance in Windows. For storage cleanup, see Free up drive space in Windows.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Devices running Windows 10 still work, but they no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. This status is relevant if you are troubleshooting a Windows 10 PC in 2026; it is separate from whether RAM is causing a particular slowdown. A support-status change does not diagnose a memory problem, so still check the computer’s resource use and other possible bottlenecks.

Free up RAM on a Mac

  1. Open Activity Monitor and select Memory. Review the memory pressure graph. Apple says the graph reflects several factors—including free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file-cached memory—so it is more useful than judging the system by a free-memory figure alone. Check it while the Mac is doing the work that seems slow, rather than relying on a single glance taken when the workload is different.
  2. Look for a workload-linked pattern. Notice whether memory pressure rises while you use a particular app or perform a particular task. Activity Monitor distinguishes app memory, wired memory, compressed memory, cached files, and swap used. Inactive apps can be compressed as the system approaches its memory capacity, and cached files can help apps reopen faster; those figures do not all mean the same thing as memory available for immediate use. In particular, a cached-files figure is not, by itself, a reason to try to empty memory.
  3. Quit an app you no longer need if it is contributing to the problem. Save your work, then quit the app and observe whether the workload becomes more responsive or pressure falls. Avoid force-quitting unfamiliar processes just because they appear in Activity Monitor; they may be part of macOS or another app you depend on. If the app is needed for your work, quitting it is not a lasting solution; the useful observation is whether its use coincides with the pressure and slowdown.
  4. Check beyond memory if the graph does not account for the slowdown. Apple lists low startup-disk space, memory-hungry or incompatible apps, and disk problems among possible reasons a Mac runs slowly. Check those areas rather than repeatedly trying to empty memory. A Mac may feel slow for reasons that Activity Monitor’s memory indicators do not explain.
  5. Check whether the Mac can be upgraded before considering more RAM. Apple directs users to the Memory section of System Information to check upgradeability on supported Macs. If the Upgradeable Memory pane is absent, Apple says upgradeable memory is not available for that Mac. This is model-specific; do not assume every Mac can accept a memory upgrade. Confirm what applies to your exact model before shopping or planning an installation.

Apple’s guides explain how to view memory usage in Activity Monitor, how to check whether a Mac needs more RAM, and other causes of a slow Mac.

Choose the next step from what you observe

What you observe Useful next step What it addresses
Windows apps you recognize are using resources and are not needed now. Save work and close those apps; check Task Manager’s Performance view. Reduces active app workload and helps assess whether resource use is involved.
Windows apps launch automatically but do not need to. Review Task Manager > Startup apps and disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup. Unnecessary startup activity.
A Windows drive has little free space. Review Windows storage settings and temporary files carefully. Storage capacity, not RAM directly.
Mac memory pressure rises during use of a particular app or workload. Quit an app you no longer need and check whether the pattern changes. Memory demand associated with that app or workload.
Memory indicators do not explain the slowdown. Check storage, background activity, updates or compatibility, malware on Windows, and disk health as appropriate to the platform. Other possible causes of slow performance.
Memory pressure remains a concern and you are considering a hardware upgrade. Confirm the exact computer model’s upgradeability and supported memory before buying anything. Whether a compatible, practical upgrade is possible.

The comparison is not “which cleanup is best for every computer?” It is “which action fits the evidence on this computer?” Closing a recognized app you are not using is a reasonable first action when app workload is involved. Disabling an unnecessary startup app is aimed at automatic launches. Storage cleanup is for low drive space, not a direct RAM-clearing technique. Updates, malware checks, and compatibility or disk checks address other possible causes. If there is no sign that memory is involved, buying RAM or repeatedly closing apps may not solve the slowdown.

When a RAM upgrade is worth investigating

Consider an upgrade only after checking the machine’s own indicators and ruling out simpler causes. Persistent high memory pressure during ordinary work can justify checking whether a Mac supports upgradeable memory. For a PC, identify the exact model and verify upgradeability, memory type, capacity limits, and installation requirements against model-specific documentation before purchase. The available guidance does not establish one suitable RAM module or capacity for all computers, and some older PCs may remain limited by hardware even after software changes.

Use compatibility as a checklist, not a guess based on a general product description. Confirm that the specific computer can be upgraded, which memory type it supports, the capacity it can handle, and what installation requires. The right answer depends on the model; a part that fits one computer may not be suitable for another. If an upgrade is not supported, or if the observed slowdown points to storage, software, background activity, compatibility, or disk condition instead, a memory purchase may not address the problem.

If the computer is slow but memory indicators are not pointing to a problem, more RAM may not address the cause. Match the next troubleshooting step to the evidence: app activity, startup behavior, storage, software, compatibility, or disk condition. There is no supported universal figure for how much speed a generic RAM cleanup will add, so judge the change by whether the same task actually becomes more responsive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does having little free RAM automatically mean my computer is too slow?

No. Free memory alone does not establish that RAM is causing a slowdown. On a Mac, Apple recommends looking at memory pressure, which reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file-cached memory. On Windows, use Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views and check whether resource use coincides with the slowdown.

Is it safe to end every process using a lot of memory?

No. Close or quit apps you recognize and are not using. Save work first, and avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes or force-quitting unfamiliar Mac processes; they may be part of the operating system or an app you rely on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does deleting files or clearing temporary files free RAM?

Deleting files frees drive space, not RAM directly. Check storage if the drive is low, but treat that as a separate troubleshooting step from reviewing memory use.

Why does Activity Monitor show cached or compressed memory?

Activity Monitor reports several kinds of memory. Apple says cached files can help apps reopen faster, and inactive apps can be compressed as the system approaches its memory capacity. Those figures should not be interpreted as though each one were simply unused RAM that needs to be emptied.

Can I add more RAM to any Mac or PC?

No. Upgradeability depends on the exact model. Apple says to check the Memory section in System Information; if the Upgradeable Memory pane is absent, the Mac does not have upgradeable memory. For a PC, verify the exact model’s upgradeability, supported memory type and capacity, and installation requirements before buying.

The Bottom Line

Check memory use first, then close only recognized apps you no longer need and see whether the same workload improves. Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor’s memory pressure graph on a Mac. If memory is not the apparent bottleneck, investigate storage, startup or background activity, software, compatibility, malware on Windows, or disk issues as appropriate. Consider an upgrade only after confirming that your exact computer supports it.
