Apple does not specify a universal amount of free space an iOS update requires, so use the storage screen and the update’s own result rather than aiming for an arbitrary gigabyte target.
Check what is using iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available capacity, Apple’s recommendations, and apps ranked by how much storage they use. Review the category breakdown—such as photos, media, messages, and other data—before removing personal content. Apple’s guide, How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad, explains this view.

Start with the largest items, but distinguish an app from the files it contains. A large app may be holding downloaded videos, music, maps, or documents that you can remove and download again later. Delete only items you can replace or have backed up.

Choose the least risky way to make room

Offload apps before deleting them
If it appears on the iPhone Storage screen, turn on Offload Unused Apps. Apple also recommends offloading apps as a way to make room when an update cannot install. Offloading removes the app but retains its documents and data; deleting the app removes its related data. See Apple’s iPhone or iPad storage guidance for the distinction.

To offload one app manually, tap it in the iPhone Storage list and choose Offload App. If you choose Delete App, its associated data is removed too. An offloaded app needs to be downloaded again before you can use it.
Remove replaceable downloads
Use the app list to find large local downloads and stored documents. Remove content you can download again or content you no longer need. iOS can also reclaim some downloadable items and temporary files during installation or an update, but do not rely on that to make enough room for every update.

Optimize photos only if iCloud is suitable
With iCloud Photos enabled, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution photos and videos remain in iCloud while smaller, space-saving copies stay on the iPhone as needed. Apple describes the feature in Manage your photo and video storage.
iCloud storage is separate from the iPhone’s local capacity. Apple’s support guidance describes 5 GB of free iCloud storage as the starting capacity; that is not extra iPhone storage or an iOS-update requirement. Check your available iCloud space before relying on photo optimization. If you delete a photo while using iCloud Photos, it is deleted from iCloud and other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Copy anything you want to keep somewhere separate before deleting it.

Retry the update if it still will not install
Apple says, “You need enough storage space on your device to download an update,” but gives no universal gigabyte minimum in its update instructions. Its separate guidance of at least 1 GB of free space is intended to help avoid slowdowns, not to define the minimum for installing iOS. Neither figure is a reliable update target for every iPhone or iOS release.
- After making room, open Settings > General > Software Update and try the update again.
- If the download is stuck or fails, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the downloaded iOS update in the list, and tap it to delete it.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
- If it still does not work, update using a Mac or the supported iTunes workflow. Apple’s current instructions are in If your iPhone or iPad won’t update.
A failed update is not always a storage problem: compatibility, network access, Apple’s update servers, or an incomplete download can also be involved. If the iPhone Storage screen shows room but the retry fails, use Apple’s troubleshooting steps rather than deleting personal data indiscriminately.
