Cleaning removes coffee oils and residue; descaling removes mineral buildup. The products and steps are not interchangeable, and vinegar is permitted for some machines but prohibited for others.
Before you start: identify the machine and the maintenance task
Find the brand and model number, then consult that model’s owner’s manual or official support page. Check which cleaning program, descaler, removable parts, and rinse sequence it specifies. Do not assume that instructions for another machine from the same brand apply.

- Everyday cleaning removes grounds, milk residue, and grime from removable parts and surfaces.
- Coffee-residue cleaning removes oils and deposits from the brew path. Some machines have a dedicated cleaning program or require a cleaning tablet.
- Descaling removes mineral deposits from water passages. Use the descaling product and process specified for your model.
These tasks may have separate programs. Bosch, for example, distinguishes cleaning from descaling even though some machines can run a combined program; its support materials list cleaning tablets and espresso descaling tablets for their respective jobs. Bosch Home Appliances: cleaning and care
How to clean removable parts and coffee residue
Clean the parts you can safely remove
Empty the machine and remove only the parts the manual identifies as removable for cleaning. Wash and dry them according to the manufacturer’s directions, and wipe the exterior without letting liquid enter electrical or other openings. Espresso machines may have separate instructions for the brew group, milk system, or attachments; do not assume all parts are dishwasher-safe or that they should be rinsed the same way.

Run the machine’s cleaning program, if it has one
If the manual calls for a cleaning tablet or a dedicated cleaning cycle, use it for coffee oils and residue—not as a substitute for descaler. Follow the exact placement and cycle instructions. Bosch lists cleaning tablets separately from its espresso descaling tablets, illustrating why the two products should not be treated as interchangeable. Bosch Home Appliances: cleaning and care
How to descale a drip coffee maker
- Check the model-specific directions. Confirm the approved descaling liquid or solution, how to prepare it, and whether the machine has a designated cycle. Do not pour in a homemade mixture unless the manufacturer allows it.
- Prepare the brewer. Empty the carafe and filter basket, and follow the manual’s directions for the water tank and any filter.
- Run the specified descaling cycle. Use the model’s cycle or operating sequence and collect the output as directed.
- Discard the solution. Empty the carafe or other collection vessel after the descaling stage.
- Rinse with fresh water as directed. Run the number of water-only cycles required by the manual before brewing coffee.
The rinse count is model-specific. De’Longhi’s US instructions for the DCF6212TTC and DCF6214T call for three rinse cycles; GE Appliances specifies at least three water-only cycles for the drip-maker models covered by its directions. These counts are not universal instructions for other brewers. De’Longhi: descaling the DCF6212TTC or DCF6214T · GE Appliances: cleaning and descaling a coffee maker

How to descale an espresso machine
Espresso-machine procedures vary more widely than drip-maker cycles. Some machines prompt you through a programmed sequence; others require you to send descaler through particular outlets. Use only the steps for your model.
- Check what to remove or set aside. Remove a water filter, milk attachment, or other component only if the manufacturer’s procedure tells you to. Follow any instruction to change the local water-hardness setting.
- Prepare the machine and a collection vessel. Add the specified descaler and water as directed, and place a suitable container under the outlets named in the manual.
- Run the specified descaling procedure. Follow the machine’s prompts or manual sequence. The process may involve the brew group, hot-water outlet, or steam wand.
- Refill and rinse when prompted. Empty the collection vessel and refill the tank with fresh water at the points the procedure specifies. Complete every programmed rinse stage.
- Clean other components separately as directed. Descaling does not replace cleaning the brew group or milk system when the manufacturer requires those tasks.
For the Philips 5000-series machines covered by its cited directions, the programmed descaling process takes approximately 30 minutes. KitchenAid’s example for its semi-automatic espresso machine takes approximately 10 minutes and includes stages through the group head and steam wand. Those times and steps apply to the named machine procedures, not espresso machines generally. Is vinegar safe to use?
Only if the instructions for your exact model allow it. Vinegar is not a universal descaler: some drip-machine directions permit household vinegar, while Philips prohibits it for the espresso-machine series covered by its guidance.
For specified Philips Café Gourmet drip models, Philips allows 4% white household vinegar or liquid descaler and advises against powder descalers or tablets. KitchenAid’s drip-maker guidance also describes using vinegar for its models. By contrast, Philips says for its specified espresso series: “Use Philips descaler only. Do not use products with sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic, or acetic acid (vinegar). These damage the machine and void the warranty.” Philips: descaling specified Café Gourmet drip models · KitchenAid: cleaning and descaling a drip coffee maker · Philips Canada: descaling specified espresso machines

How often should you descale?
There is no single interval that fits every machine. GE says frequency depends on local water quality and use; KitchenAid says espresso-machine descaling frequency depends on regional water hardness and advises setting the machine for the local hardness. Follow your machine’s indicator and manual, which account for its own design and settings. For its drip coffee makers, KitchenAid lists longer brewing times, excessive steam, loud gurgling during brewing, and water remaining in the tank after brewing as signs that may call for cleaning or descaling. These symptoms do not prove that scale is the cause; use the machine’s cleaning-needed indicator and troubleshooting instructions to decide what to do. KitchenAid: cleaning and descaling a drip coffee maker
Choosing a descaler or cleaning tablet
Start with compatibility, not a claim that one product is universally best. For espresso machines, choose a descaler the manufacturer approves for your model. Cleaning tablets serve a different purpose and belong in a cleaning cycle only when the machine’s instructions call for them. Before buying or using a product, check:
- whether the manufacturer approves it for your exact model;
- whether it is intended for a drip maker or espresso machine;
- whether the machine requires liquid or tablet format;
- whether the procedure says to remove or replace a water filter;
- whether the machine has a programmed cycle and what rinse stages it requires.
Do not choose an “espresso machine descaler” solely because it is labeled for espresso machines; confirm the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance first. Likewise, a cleaning tablet does not replace a descaler when mineral deposits need to be removed.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using vinegar without checking. Manufacturer instructions conflict, and vinegar can be prohibited for some espresso machines.
- Skipping the rinse. Complete the specified fresh-water rinse sequence before making coffee.
- Confusing cleaning with descaling. Coffee-oil cleaners and mineral descalers have different jobs.
- Copying another model’s procedure. Cycles, removable components, water-hardness settings, and rinse counts vary.
- Removing filters or attachments automatically. Do so only when your machine’s procedure instructs it.
