If your iPhone says there isn’t enough space to update, start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check what is using space and review Apple’s recommendations before deleting anything. There is no single free-space requirement that applies to every iPhone and every iOS update.
Check iPhone storage before removing anything
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available device space, storage recommendations and how much room apps and content use. Apple notes that cached or temporary data may not be represented exactly in an app’s usage total. Its guidance says, “You need enough storage space on your device to download an update,” but does not give a universal number of gigabytes to clear. iPhone storage is the local capacity inside your device. iCloud storage is a separate online account quota: buying more iCloud storage does not increase the iPhone’s built-in capacity. Apple says new iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free iCloud storage; that is cloud space, not a promise of 5 GB free on the phone. Apple’s iCloud storage overview distinguishes the two.

Free space with the least risk first
Offload apps you can reinstall
In iPhone Storage, select an app and choose Offload App if the option is available. Offloading removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data; its icon remains so you can reinstall it. Apple’s update troubleshooting page also recommends enabling Offload Unused Apps when storage is insufficient. Choose apps you do not need immediately and can download again.

Delete apps only when you no longer need their data
Deleting an app removes the app and its related data, unlike offloading. Before choosing Delete App, consider whether you need locally stored files, game progress or other app data. App behavior and sync or backup options can vary, so check the app’s own account or backup settings before removing data you cannot replace.
Remove downloads and files you can replace
Review the Files app for large local items you no longer need. Also check downloaded films and episodes in the TV app and offline content in streaming apps. Removing a download can reclaim local space while leaving the title available to stream or download again, depending on the service and your access. Choose a photo and video strategy carefully
Optimize iPhone Storage for an iCloud Photos library
If you use iCloud Photos and have sufficient iCloud space, enable Optimize iPhone Storage in the Photos settings. Full-resolution originals remain in iCloud while the iPhone keeps space-saving versions when needed. This can reduce local photo storage, but it depends on an active iCloud Photos sync workflow and available cloud quota. It is not an independent backup: deleting a photo from iCloud Photos deletes it across devices using the same Apple Account. See Apple’s guidance on managing photo and video storage.

Transfer wanted media to a computer before removing it
If you want selected photos or videos off the iPhone but do not want to rely on iCloud Photos optimization, transfer them to a computer and confirm they arrived before removing local copies. Apple explains transfer options for moving photos and videos from an iPhone to a computer. A computer’s existing storage can be the destination; an external drive is optional, not a required direct-iPhone accessory.

Delete media only after checking sync and backup
When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting an item on one device syncs that deletion to other devices using the same Apple Account. Before deleting, make sure wanted originals are backed up or transferred to a separate destination. Do not treat a synced photo library as a separate backup copy.

There is no supported manual system-cache cleanup
iOS manages cached and temporary files and removes them when needed; users do not manually delete system cache files. A third-party cleaner cannot be assumed to clear this system storage. Apple’s iPhone storage guidance covers how iOS handles these files.

Remove computer-synced content from the computer
If content was synced from a Mac or PC, you may need to remove it through Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes rather than from the iPhone itself. Apple provides the relevant steps in its storage-management instructions.

- Recheck available space: Return to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and confirm that your changes freed room.
- Connect to Wi-Fi: Use a stable Wi-Fi connection and avoid downloading other content while the update is in progress.
- Connect the iPhone to power: Keep it plugged in during wireless installation.
- Try the update again: Follow the on-screen update prompt. Download time varies with the update size and internet speed.
