Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a Mini LED TV by its exact model and screen size, then compare independent brightness measurements and local-dimming performance—not just the advertised peak brightness or zone count. For bright rooms and HDR highlights, brightness matters; for dark-room viewing, pay close attention to black levels, haloing around subtitles and lights, and how smoothly the dimming zones respond.
What Mini LED means for picture quality
Mini LED is a backlight approach used in LCD televisions. Smaller LEDs allow a TV to divide its backlight into many separately controlled zones. Local dimming can raise or lower light in different parts of the screen, improving contrast and helping bright HDR highlights stand out. But the LCD pixels are not self-emissive: the TV controls groups of pixels through backlight zones rather than lighting each pixel independently. A bright object can therefore illuminate nearby dark areas, creating a visible glow called blooming or haloing. RTINGS explains its local-dimming testing.

How to compare Mini LED TVs
Start with the exact model and size
Specifications can vary across sizes in a product series, and a manufacturer may advertise a series maximum rather than the specification of every configuration. For example, TCL lists the QM7K series at up to 2,500 local-dimming zones and up to 3,000 nits of HDR peak brightness. Those are series maxima; check the specification sheet for the particular screen size before treating either figure as applicable. TCL’s QM7K specifications provide the manufacturer’s claims.
Compare measured brightness under like conditions
Peak-brightness claims are not automatically comparable. Look for independent measurements that identify the exact model and size, picture mode, and test conditions. Check both SDR and HDR results, and distinguish small highlight windows from larger bright areas and test patterns from real content. A manufacturer’s maximum is not a guarantee of what the TV will deliver across a whole scene.

Use zone count as a clue, not a score
More zones can allow finer spatial control in principle, but the count alone does not show how accurately the TV selects brightness, how quickly zones transition, or how effectively its optics contain light. Xiaomi, for example, specifies 308 independent dimming zones for its 2025 TV S Mini LED 55. That manufacturer specification and TCL’s QM7K series maxima describe different products; they are not a controlled comparison and do not establish which TV has better contrast or less blooming. Xiaomi’s product specifications give the stated zone count.
Look for precision and transition behavior
Independent tests of zone precision and transitions can reveal whether a television keeps bright and dark elements distinct and whether its dimming changes smoothly or visibly lags. Review these results alongside blooming observations rather than trying to infer performance from the number of zones. RTINGS describes dedicated local-dimming tests.

- UNIBODY SLIM DESIGN: Edge-to-edge display and a seamless design that disappears into your room — so all you see is the picture
How to judge blooming in scenes you watch
Check representative material with small, bright objects against dark backgrounds. Subtitles, star fields, end credits, and isolated lights make halos easier to spot. Notice how much light spills into the surrounding black area and whether it changes unevenly as objects move or scenes cut. A specification sheet cannot tell you how visible those artifacts will be in the content you watch; zone count alone is not a reliable substitute for viewing or independent testing.

Match brightness and dimming to your room
- Bright room or frequent daytime viewing: Give more weight to measured brightness and how the TV handles reflections in your room. A brighter image can help, but the advertised peak is not the same as sustained brightness across a large area.
- Dark-room movies: Give more weight to stable blacks, zone precision, and whether halos around subtitles or small highlights distract you.
- Mixed SDR and HDR use: Compare results for both formats and consider the kind of content you watch most. Do not assume one peak-brightness figure describes every scene or viewing mode.
Check the rest of the TV after picture quality
Once brightness, dimming behavior, and blooming suit your needs, compare the exact models for screen size, viewing angle, motion, HDR formats, gaming features, operating system, and price in your market. A Mini LED badge by itself does not guarantee strong performance or effective local dimming; confirm what the specific configuration offers and look for model-level testing. Prices and availability vary by market, so check current local listings rather than relying on a general model comparison.
