The safest way to free space on a drive without deleting a game is to move its Steam installation to another library. If you uninstall a game or delete folders manually, first confirm where that game stores its saves and whether Steam Cloud actually syncs them. Cloud coverage is set game by game, and Steam’s game backup feature is not a guaranteed save backup.
Choose an action that matches what you need
Moving an installed game and removing one are different operations. Moving relocates the game’s installation files to another Steam library; uninstalling removes the installation from the drive. Neither action should be treated as a save backup. The right choice depends on whether you have another suitable drive and whether you want to keep the game installed.

| Action | What happens to installed game files | What to know about saves |
|---|---|---|
| Move the game to another Steam library | Steam relocates the installation folder; it does not uninstall the game. | Check Cloud coverage or make a separate save copy if you are unsure. A move is not a save backup. |
| Uninstall a selected game | The installed game files are removed, freeing space on that drive. | Verify the title’s Cloud setting and save location first; preserve local saves separately if needed. |
| Back up a game through Steam | Steam backs up eligible game files. | Do not assume saved games, custom content, or configuration files are included. |
| Uninstall Steam itself | Steam warns its uninstall process removes installed game content. | This is not a routine way to clear space. If reinstalling Steam while retaining installations, protect the steamapps folder first. |
A move frees room on the original drive, but it does not reduce the game’s total storage use across all your drives. If every drive is full, moving alone will not solve the overall capacity problem. In that situation, uninstalling a game you no longer need or adding suitable storage are the options covered here; do not delete unfamiliar files in an attempt to create space.

Move a game to another Steam library
Steam’s Storage settings can add a library location on another drive and move selected installed games there. The destination library must exist before you move a game. Steam’s default Windows installation path is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon; users can create an alternate library location on another drive.
- Check the destination drive. Make sure it is a suitable drive with enough free space for the game you want to relocate. An additional internal drive is optional; you can use an existing drive that has room.
- Open Steam Storage. In the Steam client, go to Settings > Storage. Review the drives and library folders shown.
- Create a library on the destination drive if needed. Use the add-location control in Storage to create the Steam library folder. Do this before choosing a game to move.
- Select the current library. In Storage, choose the drive or library containing the game installations you want to relocate.
- Select the game and move it. Select the relevant installation or installations and choose Move. Steam moves the installation folder to the destination library rather than uninstalling the game.
- Confirm the result in Storage. Check that the game is listed under the destination library and that the original drive has recovered space. Do not delete folders by hand as a substitute for the client’s move workflow.
Steam’s instructions describe the Storage tab and the add-library and Move workflow, but client layouts and labels can change. If the exact controls differ in your version, use the Storage page’s drive and library controls rather than relying on a particular button position.
When a move is the best option
- You want to keep the game installed and playable but need room on its current drive.
- Another internal drive already has enough capacity, or you are willing to add one.
- You want Steam to handle relocating the installation rather than uninstalling and downloading the game again.
Moving is particularly useful when you want to preserve access to a large installation but need room on the drive where it currently lives. It changes the library location; it does not remove the game from your Steam account or turn the game files into a backup. Check Storage afterward so you can see which library Steam recognizes as holding the installation.

Internal and external drives
Steam allows another library path on another drive. An additional internal SSD or other internal drive can therefore host games without requiring that Steam itself be installed there. Steam cautions against installing Steam to an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. External drives may also disconnect, leading to recognition or performance issues; Steam’s support guidance recommends an internal drive if an external-drive setup causes those problems. This is not a requirement to buy a new drive: moving games works with any suitable library location that is available to you.
If you are considering buying a drive, treat it as an optional capacity choice rather than a prerequisite for moving games. First check whether another existing drive has room for the installation you want to relocate. Steam supports an alternate library path, so the client itself does not have to be installed on the same drive as every game. If an external drive is already in use, be aware that disconnects can make a library unavailable and may create recognition or performance trouble.
Check save protection before deleting or moving folders
A game’s installation files and saved progress are not the same thing. Save files may be stored outside the Steam library, and developers choose the save locations and determine which user files Steam Cloud synchronizes. Therefore, a game being installed through Steam does not by itself mean that every save is in the cloud or inside the game’s installation folder.

Use a conservative rule: before any action that deletes files or changes folders manually, establish which files are saves and make a separate copy if Cloud coverage is absent or uncertain. A normal Steam move is designed to relocate the installation, but you still should not treat that operation as protection for save data or rely on a generic path for every game.
Check Steam Cloud for the specific game
- Look at the game’s Steam store page. Steam indicates there whether a game supports Steam Cloud.
- Check the game’s own setting. In your Library, open the game’s Properties and look for its Cloud Synchronization option. Cloud is also controlled by a global setting in Steam client Settings, so a title’s per-game setting and the client-wide setting both matter.
- Do not infer coverage from the Cloud label alone. Developers choose which files are synchronized. The game may support Cloud without syncing every save-related file or custom file you care about.
- Before a sync conflict, compare the displayed file dates. Choose the version that matches your most recent progress. A conflict prompt is a choice between versions, not proof that either one can be recovered later.
Steam says it has limited ability to recover lost Cloud data. Treat synchronization as useful protection, not as a guarantee that every file is safe or recoverable. If the game is important to you, confirm its setting and make a separate local copy of the relevant saves before removing files. A Cloud indicator answers whether the title supports the feature; the developer’s choices determine which user files it actually covers.
Cloud data is also not the same as an independent, all-purpose save archive. Steam stores Cloud data locally under userdata by default, with different paths on Windows, macOS, and Linux. That location concerns Cloud data and is not a universal location for all game saves. Do not delete or copy a folder there on the assumption it contains every save for every game.
Find local saves when coverage is absent or uncertain
If a game has no Cloud support, Cloud is disabled, or you cannot establish which files are covered, locate the title’s save files and copy them to a separate safe location before uninstalling or manually changing folders. On Windows, Steam says many third-party saves that are not stored on Steam Cloud may be under C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games. This is a starting point, not a universal path: each developer can choose where a game stores saves. If you cannot identify the right files, consult the game’s official support or publisher before deleting anything.
Do not conclude that a save is absent just because it is not in that Documents folder. Developers decide save locations, and the Windows path is only a possible location for many third-party non-Cloud saves. If the game’s official guidance identifies a different folder, use that title-specific information. If you cannot tell which files are saves, pause before deleting them rather than guessing from a folder name.

Make the separate copy useful
Copy the save files to a location that will not be removed along with the game installation or Steam folder. Keep the original folder structure and note which game the copy belongs to; this makes it easier to identify the files if you later need to restore them. For a manual move, copy first, verify that the copy exists, and only then remove the original files if that is part of the space-saving action. Avoid deleting a folder merely because its name resembles the game’s title: it could contain saves, settings, or other user data.

A useful save copy should remain separate from the files you plan to remove. After copying, check that the destination contains the files and folders you intended to preserve. If you later restore them, the game may expect them in their original corresponding folder, so retain the folder structure and use the game’s support instructions to put them back in the right place. Steam’s backup guidance notes that third-party save files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after a restore.
What Steam Backup does—and does not—protect
Steam’s Backup feature is intended for game files and works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. It is not a dependable standalone save backup. Steam explicitly warns that backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. For third-party games, save locations vary; Steam’s support guidance says those files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after a restore.
- Use a Steam game backup when you need a backup of eligible game files.
- Make a separate copy of save files when you need to protect progress.
- Do not assume that a successful backup means that saves, custom content, or settings are included.
- Before relying on a backup for a restore, identify any game-specific files that must be preserved and where they belong.
A backup can help avoid downloading eligible game files again, but it does not remove the need to verify save coverage. Save files may be outside the Steam library and outside the files included in the backup. There is an important distinction between having a copy of the game’s installation and having a copy of your progress: Steam Backup addresses eligible game files, while saves may need to be handled separately.

A title must completely download, install, and patch through Steam for Steam Backup to work as described. Even for an eligible title, the backup is not evidence that every user-created or game-specific file is included. If your priority is progress, identify and copy the save files independently.
Uninstall a game only after checking its saves
If you need to recover space and do not have another library location with room, uninstalling a selected game can remove its installed files from the drive. Before doing so, check that title’s Cloud support and individual Cloud setting, then determine where its local saves live. If Cloud coverage is missing or unclear, make a separate copy of the saves first. A generic save path or a game backup is not enough to establish that your progress is protected.
- Check the individual game’s Cloud support and Cloud Synchronization setting.
- Identify the game’s actual save location using the game’s official support information if necessary.
- Copy local saves to a separate safe location when Cloud coverage is absent or uncertain.
- Uninstall only the selected game through Steam, rather than deleting folders manually.
- If you later reinstall, confirm the save files are still present or restore your separate copy to the required location.
This order matters: check coverage and location first, preserve local files when needed, and then remove the installation. Uninstalling is the option that actually removes game files from the selected drive; moving is preferable if you want to retain the installation and have another library with room. If you cannot establish whether your saves are covered or where they are stored, do not proceed with a manual deletion.

Uninstalling a game and uninstalling Steam are not equivalent. Steam warns that its uninstall process removes installed game content. Do not remove Steam itself as a routine space-clearing measure.
If you are reinstalling Steam and want to keep game installations
Steam instructs users who want to retain installed games during a Steam reinstall to move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling Steam. This preserves a path to the installation files, but it does not change the need to verify and protect saves separately. The steamapps folder is not a guaranteed container for every game’s save data.
Do not confuse this precaution with a save backup: preserving steamapps concerns retaining installed game content during a Steam reinstall. Saves can be stored elsewhere, and their location and Cloud coverage vary by title. Check and copy the save files separately if you need to protect progress.
Why a drive can lose space after playing a game
Installed games can take up more space over time. Steam identifies automatic patches, saved-game file creation, and custom content downloads as possible reasons available disk space decreases after a game has been run. If a drive has become tight even though you have not installed a new title, review the space used by Steam libraries and consider whether updates or content downloads account for the change. Do not remove unknown files from a game folder to recover space: they may be needed for the installation, and saves may be stored elsewhere.
This is one reason to check Storage rather than assuming that the only change was a newly installed game. Patches, save creation, and custom content can all contribute to reduced free space. The safe response is to decide whether to move or uninstall a title, then handle saves deliberately—not to guess which unfamiliar folder is expendable.
Quick decision guide
- Keep the game installed, another drive has space: add or select a destination library in Settings > Storage, then move the game.
- Remove one game to free space: verify its save coverage and local save location first; copy saves separately if needed, then uninstall that game.
- Steam Cloud is enabled: check the title’s Cloud setting and remember that developers decide which files sync. Do not assume all progress-related files are covered.
- You are unsure where saves are: do not delete game or user-data folders yet. Treat
DocumentsMy Gameson Windows as a possible starting point for many third-party non-Cloud saves, then confirm the title’s location through its official support. - You are making a Steam game backup: treat it as a backup of eligible game files, not as proof that saves and custom content are included.
- You are reinstalling Steam: move
steamappsoutside the Steam directory first if you want to retain game installations, and handle save protection separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does moving a Steam game to another library delete its saves?
Steam’s Storage move relocates the game’s installation folder without uninstalling the game. Saves may be stored outside the library, and the move is not a save backup, so check the title’s Cloud coverage and preserve local saves separately if coverage is uncertain.

Will Steam Cloud save all of my progress?
Not necessarily. Developers choose which user files are synchronized, so a game can support Steam Cloud without syncing every save-related or custom file. Check the game’s store page and its Cloud Synchronization setting in Library Properties; compare file dates if Steam presents a sync conflict.
Where are Steam game saves stored on Windows?
There is no universal path. Steam says many third-party saves not stored on Steam Cloud may be under C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games, but each developer chooses where saves go. Check the game’s official support information if you cannot identify its save folder.
Does Steam Backup include saved games?
Do not rely on it as a save backup. Steam Backup covers eligible game files, and Steam warns that backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. Third-party save paths vary, so copy saves separately.

External drives can disconnect and cause recognition or performance issues; Steam guidance recommends an internal drive if those problems occur.
What should I do before uninstalling Steam itself?
Steam warns that its uninstall process removes installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to retain game installations, move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. Protect saves separately because they are not guaranteed to be inside that folder.
The Bottom Line
To free space while keeping a game installed, create or select another library in Settings > Storage and move the game through Steam. To uninstall a title or change folders manually, first check that game’s Cloud settings and save location; when coverage is unclear, copy the saves to a separate safe location. Steam Backup protects eligible game files, not guaranteed save data.
