Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A crypto liquidation price is an estimate of the price at which a position—or, under shared-margin arrangements, an account—no longer has enough equity to meet its required maintenance margin. It is not a universal formula or a guaranteed execution price: the estimate depends on the contract, margin mode, collateral, maintenance-margin tier, fees, and the exchange’s price trigger. To manage liquidation risk, check the venue’s calculator and account risk metrics, understand whether liquidation uses mark price or last traded price, and keep position exposure within a loss you can tolerate.
What a liquidation price tells you
When you open a leveraged futures or perpetual position, your collateral supports a position whose notional exposure can be larger than the amount you put up. As the market moves against you, losses reduce the equity supporting that position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep it open. A liquidation threshold is reached when the relevant position or account falls short of that requirement.

For a simplified linear contract, a long generally approaches liquidation as price falls below entry; a short generally approaches it as price rises above entry. The estimate depends on how the contract is denominated and how the exchange accounts for position size, margin, maintenance requirements, and fees. Different venues publish different calculations, so a formula for one exchange or contract should not be treated as a universal crypto formula.
Leverage matters because it changes how much margin supports a given position exposure. All else equal, a position with less supporting margin can withstand a smaller adverse price move before reaching its maintenance requirement. The leverage setting by itself does not tell you the exact liquidation price: contract rules and the actual margin available also matter.

It helps to separate three prices that are often conflated: the entry price, the estimated liquidation threshold, and the eventual execution price if liquidation occurs. Entry price is used in the position’s profit-and-loss calculation; the threshold estimates when margin is no longer sufficient; execution is the price at which the exchange’s liquidation process actually closes some or all of the position. Those values can differ, particularly when prices move quickly or the account is using shared margin.
What goes into the calculation
Entry price, position size, and margin
The calculation starts with the position’s entry price and size, then considers the collateral or margin supporting it. In an isolated position, the exchange assesses the margin assigned to that position. Bybit’s published isolated USDT-perpetual calculation uses entry price, initial margin, maintenance margin, position size, and any extra margin. OKX publishes separate equations for USDT-margined and crypto-margined futures, reflecting that contract denomination changes the calculation.
Conceptually, the position’s loss as price moves against it consumes the equity available to support the trade. For a long in a simplified linear contract, a lower price means a loss relative to entry; for a short, a higher price does. The liquidation estimate is where the remaining equity reaches the venue’s maintenance requirement after applying the relevant contract and margin rules. This description explains the logic, not a substitute formula: inverse or crypto-margined contracts and exchange-specific fee treatment can produce different equations.

Maintenance margin is not necessarily one fixed percentage for every position. Exchanges may set tiered maintenance-margin rates according to exposure or risk-limit tier. A larger position can therefore face a different maintenance requirement, which can bring its liquidation threshold closer than an estimate based on a lower tier would suggest. Check the tier that applies to the position, not just a headline maintenance rate.
Tier rules matter when increasing position size as well as when opening a large position at once. If exposure moves into a higher risk tier, the applicable maintenance requirement may change; an estimate based on the previous tier can become stale. Check position limits and tier thresholds in the contract rules, and recalculate when exposure changes rather than assuming the original estimate continues to apply.
Fees and other deductions
Fees can affect the remaining equity and the displayed threshold. Bybit notes that closing fees can create small differences between a calculation and the liquidation price shown on its interface. OKX lists position-tier rates and fee inputs in its liquidation calculations and documents liquidation clearance fees. The exact treatment depends on the exchange and contract; do not assume that a displayed estimate includes every possible charge in the same way across venues.
Funding and other contract-specific adjustments may also affect account equity or the reference price, depending on the venue’s rules. Binance describes mark price as combining funding data and spot-market price data. That is one reason neither a simplified price-difference calculation nor a liquidation figure copied from another contract should be assumed to match the account’s live estimate.

Why margin mode changes the meaning of the estimate
| Margin mode | What supports the position | How to interpret liquidation risk |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated | Margin allocated to that position is assessed separately. | The position has its own liquidation threshold. Bybit says liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the position’s liquidation price, and liquidation of one isolated position does not affect another. Adding margin to that position generally moves its threshold farther away, all else equal. |
| Cross | Available collateral is shared among positions. | A loss in one position can reduce the resources available to support others. Bybit describes its displayed cross-margin liquidation price as a dynamic worst-case reference; it can move as account equity, unrealized P&L, open positions, maintenance requirements, and available margin change. |
| Portfolio margin | Account-level margin rules apply across positions. | Bybit says cross- and portfolio-margin liquidation occurs when the account maintenance-margin ratio reaches 100%. Consult the venue’s current rules for the account-level trigger and how positions are handled. |
A cross-margin liquidation price is therefore not necessarily a fixed line that remains valid while the rest of the account changes. Shared collateral can be affected by other open positions and their unrealized gains or losses. Monitor account equity and the maintenance-margin ratio alongside any individual position estimate.
Do not assume that changing the leverage setting alone will change the liquidation price. OKX states that changing leverage alone does not change its estimated liquidation price, although occupied margin and available balance change. Interfaces and position setups vary by venue, so use the calculator for the specific contract and margin mode rather than extrapolating from a setting label.
Leverage should not be read as a protection setting. For a given position exposure, less supporting margin generally means less room to absorb an adverse move, all else equal. But an exchange’s displayed estimate is calculated under its own rules, and a leverage adjustment may interact with occupied margin and available balance differently from one venue or account setup to another. Compare the actual margin and risk metrics, not leverage in isolation.
Why liquidation can happen before the chart appears to reach the price
The most important distinction is between mark price and last traded price. A chart commonly displays last traded price by default, but an exchange may use mark price as the liquidation trigger. Bybit says liquidation uses mark price and warns that a stop-loss triggered by last traded price can fail to execute before mark price reaches liquidation. Binance’s futures documentation likewise says liquidation prices and unrealized P&L are calculated using mark price, which combines funding data and spot-market price data.

That difference can explain an apparent mismatch: the mark price may reach the liquidation threshold even though the chart’s last traded price has not. When checking a position, identify which price series the chart shows and which reference price the venue uses for liquidation and for your stop-loss trigger.
The liquidation threshold is also not a promise that a position will be closed at exactly that price. Binance notes that in a fast market, mark price can move through a calculated threshold before the liquidation system acts, so the recorded liquidation or execution price may differ. The displayed number is an estimate tied to the venue’s mechanics, not a guaranteed fill.
Bybit’s official FAQ puts the trigger distinction this way: “In all cases, the mark price is used as the trigger reference instead of the last traded price to help prevent unnecessary liquidations caused by abnormal price fluctuations.” Binance’s official support documentation similarly states: “Your liquidation prices and unrealized PnL are calculated based on the Mark Price.” These are venue-specific explanations, so confirm the rules for the contract and account you are using.

How to check a liquidation estimate before placing a position
- Select the exact contract. Confirm whether you are looking at the intended futures or perpetual contract and its denomination. USDT-margined and crypto-margined contracts may use different calculations.
- Set the direction and margin mode. Choose long or short, then isolated, cross, or portfolio margin as applicable. A calculator result for one mode does not automatically describe another.
- Enter the position details. Use the intended entry price, amount or size, leverage, and any extra margin. For cross margin, account-wide available collateral and other open positions can affect the displayed estimate.
- Check the maintenance tier and fees. Verify the applicable risk-limit or position tier and how the exchange treats closing or liquidation fees. These inputs can make the final displayed value differ from a simplified calculation.
- Identify the trigger reference. Confirm whether liquidation and any stop-loss are keyed to mark price, last traded price, or another venue-defined reference. Do not compare a mark-price trigger with only a last-price chart.
- Recheck when account conditions change. With cross or portfolio margin, another position’s loss, changed equity, or altered maintenance requirements can shift the relevant risk threshold. Treat a displayed cross-margin price as current only for the account state it reflects.
OKX gives this calculator path: on the trading page, select the Menu (three-dot menu) in the top right > Calculator, select the margin mode and direction, then enter leverage, entry price, and amount. OKX also directs traders to its trading rules for position tiers. The exact interface can change, so use the current calculator and rules shown for your venue and contract.
When using a calculator, check that the inputs describe the position you actually intend to hold, including any extra margin and the account state relevant to cross margin. A calculator can show a useful estimate, but it cannot account for every future change in price, equity, exposure, fees, or risk tier. Revisit the number after changing the position or adding and removing collateral.
Worked example: Bybit’s cross-margin illustration
Bybit’s help-center illustration uses a 2 BTC long entered at 10,000 USDT, 100x leverage, a 2,000 USDT available balance, and a 0.5% maintenance-margin rate. In that example, maintenance margin is 100 USDT. Subtracting it from the available balance leaves 1,900 USDT of sustainable loss; divided across 2 BTC, that is 950 USDT per BTC. The resulting estimated threshold is 9,050 USDT.
Bybit labels the illustration as excluding fees. Its figures and rate are assumptions for that example, not a universal maintenance rate or a general formula for other exchanges, contracts, margin modes, or account states. The example is useful for showing how available balance and maintenance margin affect a cross-margin estimate, but an actual account’s result depends on its current positions and rules.
The arithmetic shows the relationship in that particular illustration: 1,900 USDT of remaining loss capacity divided by 2 BTC gives 950 USDT per BTC, and subtracting that amount from the 10,000 USDT entry gives 9,050 USDT. Do not carry that result over to an isolated position or another contract; the available collateral and calculation inputs would differ.
Ways to manage liquidation risk
Keep exposure within a tolerable loss
Position size and total account exposure determine how much adverse movement the account must absorb. Binance explains that larger absolute exposure requires more margin and lower leverage, and recommends adding margin or reducing positions to lower the margin ratio. Decide in advance what loss the position and account can withstand, then size exposure accordingly; a liquidation estimate is not a substitute for that decision.
Consider total exposure, not only the amount of collateral shown beside one position. Several positions can draw on the same balance under cross margin, and correlated positions may lose value at the same time. A position that appears manageable by itself can contribute to a much tighter account-wide margin position when combined with other exposure.

Use margin deliberately
For an isolated position, adding margin increases the collateral supporting that position and generally moves its liquidation threshold farther away, all else equal. It does not remove the possibility of liquidation: price movement, fees, and maintenance requirements still matter. With cross margin, added or remaining collateral is shared, so assess the effect on the account rather than treating one position in isolation.
Place and monitor stops with the trigger price in mind
A stop-loss is not reliable protection if its trigger uses a different price reference from liquidation and the market moves quickly. Compare the stop trigger with the venue’s mark price, and avoid leaving the stop so close to the liquidation threshold that mark price can reach liquidation first. Execution is not guaranteed at the stop price in fast conditions.
Monitor the whole account when collateral is shared
For cross or portfolio margin, watch total equity, maintenance-margin ratio, available margin, and open positions—not just one displayed liquidation price. A losing or correlated position can consume shared resources and worsen the risk of other positions. Bybit describes account maintenance-margin ratio as the relevant trigger for cross- and portfolio-margin liquidation in its system.
Know the venue’s liquidation process
Exchanges can handle liquidation differently, including how they use tiers, fees, partial closes, or account-level triggers. Bybit describes tiered partial-close behavior in some risk tiers; OKX documents liquidation clearance fees; Binance explains mark-price triggers and the possibility of a price difference in volatile markets. Before trading, read the current contract and liquidation rules for the venue and region you use. No margin choice, calculator, stop, or monitoring routine can guarantee that liquidation will not occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to investigate an apparent early liquidation
- Compare the right prices. Check the mark-price history around the event against the last traded price on the chart. A mark-price trigger can explain why the last-price chart did not touch the displayed threshold.
- Confirm the margin mode and account state. For cross or portfolio margin, review account equity, unrealized P&L, open positions, maintenance requirements, and available margin at the time. A reference price may have shifted as these values changed.
- Review contract tier and deductions. Check the maintenance-margin tier and applicable fee treatment. Closing fees or other contract-specific inputs can create differences from a simplified estimate.
- Check the venue’s event and execution records. In a fast market, the mark price may move through the estimate before the liquidation process completes, so the recorded execution price can differ from the threshold.
- Compare your settings with the official rules. Verify the contract, calculator inputs, trigger reference, and liquidation mechanics against the venue’s current documentation. A price estimate alone cannot explain an event without the account and contract context.
When investigating, distinguish the threshold that appeared in the interface from the prices recorded for the mark, last trade, and liquidation execution. Then compare those timestamps with the position and account details at the time. For cross margin in particular, a current screen may not reproduce the earlier state because equity, open-position P&L, or available margin may have changed.
What to compare across exchanges and contracts
If you are evaluating different trading venues or contracts, focus on rules that change the calculation or the liquidation process, rather than comparing displayed prices without context:

- How mark price is constructed and which reference price triggers liquidation and stop orders.
- Maintenance-margin tiers, position limits, and how exposure changes the applicable tier.
- How closing fees and liquidation-related fees enter the estimate or process.

- Whether liquidation can involve partial position closes and how the exchange handles positions at different risk tiers.
Check the current specifications for your location and the specific contract before relying on any venue-specific number. Rules and availability are not interchangeable across products or regions. An exchange calculator or trading-rules page is the most direct place to confirm inputs such as margin mode, applicable tier, and fee treatment; do not assume a tool or rule from one venue applies to another.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a crypto liquidation price calculated?
It is estimated from the contract’s entry price, position size, margin or available collateral, maintenance-margin requirement, and applicable fees or deductions. The exact equation varies by contract denomination, margin mode, risk tier, and exchange, so use the venue’s current calculator and rules rather than a universal formula.
Why was I liquidated before the chart reached my liquidation price?
The exchange may trigger liquidation using mark price while your chart displays last traded price. Mark price can reach the threshold first. In volatile conditions, the price can also move through the estimate before the liquidation process completes, so the recorded execution price may differ from the displayed threshold.
Does increasing leverage always change my liquidation price?
No. The result depends on the exchange’s rules and the actual margin supporting the position. OKX states that changing leverage alone does not change its estimated liquidation price, although occupied margin and available balance change. Check the specific contract calculator and account inputs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan adding margin prevent liquidation?
Adding margin to an isolated position generally moves its liquidation threshold farther away, all else equal. It does not guarantee protection: adverse price moves, fees, and maintenance requirements still apply. With cross margin, collateral is shared across positions, so assess account-wide equity and risk metrics.
What should I compare when choosing between contracts or exchanges?
Compare margin modes and collateral behavior, mark-price construction and triggers, maintenance-margin tiers and position limits, fee treatment, account-ratio liquidation rules, and whether the venue uses partial closes. Verify current contract rules and local availability before relying on a displayed estimate.
The Bottom Line
A liquidation price is a venue- and contract-specific estimate, not a guaranteed fill or a fixed promise—especially with cross or portfolio margin. Check the exact contract, margin mode, maintenance tier, fees, and mark-price trigger; monitor account-wide risk when collateral is shared; and size exposure so a loss remains within your tolerance. These steps can help manage risk, but none can eliminate the possibility of liquidation.
