Yes—4K video on the Panasonic Lumix G85 shows a narrower vertical view than a 4:3 still photo taken with the same lens. That difference comes from comparing a 16:9 video frame with a 4:3 photo frame; it does not establish a separate numeric crop factor for ordinary 4K recording. Panasonic’s documentation describes a different feature, 4K Live Crop, which crops a 4K view down to Full HD for in-camera panning or zooming.
What “crop” means on the G85
The word crop can refer to two different things here. First, the camera’s 4K video frame has a 16:9 shape, while still photographs can use a 4:3 shape. With the same lens, the 16:9 video frame covers less of the scene vertically than a 4:3 still frame. That is the practical framing change many users notice when switching from photos to video.

That comparison does not tell you whether the G85 applies an additional sensor-area crop in normal 4K recording, or what its multiplier would be. Panasonic’s published specifications and manual confirm the video modes but do not give a numeric extra crop factor for ordinary 4K capture.

What resolution and frame rates does 4K use?
The G85 records UHD 4K at 3840×2160. Panasonic’s North American specifications list MP4 recording at 30p and 100 Mbps, as well as 24p. Panasonic Australia’s archived specifications list 30p, 25p and 24p at 100 Mbps. The camera’s manual likewise lists 3840×2160 recording modes at 30p, 25p and 24p.

These listings show why it is worth checking the documentation for the market where the camera was sold: regional mode listings are not proof that every G85 has identical menu options. How 4K Live Crop differs from ordinary 4K
4K Live Crop is a named feature, not Panasonic’s term for the usual difference between a 16:9 video frame and a 4:3 photo. It begins with the 4K angle of view and crops the image to Full HD, letting you create a pan or zoom while the camera stays fixed. Panasonic’s manual describes it this way: “By cropping your motion picture down from the 4K angle of view to Full High Definition, you can record a motion picture that pans and zooms in/out while leaving the camera in a fixed position.”

In short, normal 4K recording is the camera’s UHD video mode; 4K Live Crop is a separate Full HD recording function that uses a smaller area of the 4K view to simulate camera movement.

What to expect when framing a shot
- If a composition looks tighter vertically in video than in a 4:3 still, the aspect-ratio change explains that visible difference.
- Do not rely on a specific extra 4K crop multiplier as an official Panasonic specification; the cited Panasonic materials do not state one.
- If you need more scene coverage, adjust your framing or consider a wider-angle lens, checking compatibility with your camera before buying.
